Bukit Gelugor goes to polls

BUKI T GELUGOR After 13 days of campaign, the Bukit Gelugor polling day has finally arrived.

The campaign has been subdued somewhat due to BN not contesting the seat following MCA’s decision not to enter the fray, opting instead to focus on preventing PAS from tabling a Private Member’s Bill on hudud in Parliament on June 9.

All eyes are on DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh (centre, in picture), largely expected to win over Parti Cinta Malaysia’s Huan Cheng Guan, and two independent candidates Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan and Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Sathar.

8.30am: Bukit Gelugor voters have started casting their votes in all the 17 district polling centres.

DAP is not taking any chances and 37 vehicles on standby to ferry voters to their respective polling stations.

Ramkarpal is expected to visit the SMK Air Itam at 9am, his first stop before he proceeds to other centres.

‘Parti Cari Makan’ is BN proxy, says Azmin

Although BN is not contesting in the Bukit Gelugor by-election, it has, however, appointed a proxy, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said.

He was referring to Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM), which he mockingly referred to as “Parti Cari Makan”.

PCM vice-president Huan Cheng Guan is one of four candidates battling for the Parliament seat in Penang.

Azmin claimed that BN is using a proxy because the ruling coalition and its chief Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak could not find a candidate.

“We are not asking him to find 10 people, just one and yet, he is not able to do it. Instead he appoints Parti Cinta Malaysia to contest,” he told reporters after launching the PKR operations centre.

This morning, Huandenied being a BN-appointed Independent candidate, saying he was contesting under his party logo.

MCA’s changed tune titled ‘We’ll lose in Gelugor’

May 11, 2014

A day after saying it did not want to contest the  Bukit Gelugor by-election as it wanted to concentrate on the constitutional crisis triggered by PAS’ plan to introduce hudud, the MCA today changed its story by saying it decided to stay out as it stood little chance of winning.

MCA secretary general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said after the 13th general election (GE13), there have been no positive factors that can give victory to MCA in the coming Bukit Gelugor by-election, and this is the main reason why the party decided not to contest in the by-election.

Ong said it was better for the party to concentrate on restoration and renewal efforts to strengthen it in facing the next general election.

Karpal leaves a ‘tough battleground’

April 24, 2014

DAP and BN agree that the Bukit Gelugor by-election will not be an easy ride as replacing the late Karpal Singh is tough.

GEORGE TOWN: Both the DAP and Barisan Nasional (BN) have declared that the forthcoming Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election in Penang as a “tough battleground”, albeit for different reasons.

Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow admitted that the coalition faced an uphill task to wrest Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat from DAP, the state ruling party, due to high anti-BN sentiments in the state.

He reasoned that local anti-BN sentiments had not watered down even nearly a year after the 13th general election on May 5, 2013.

He said Penangites were still critical against BN on certain pressing national issues, which he did not elaborate.

“The sentiment against BN in Penang has yet to shift since the last election.

“There are some pressing national issues that have yet to produce convincing arguments to be accepted by the people.

“Bukit Gelugor undeniably is going to be an uphill battle,” said Teng, when contacted.

Meanwhile DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s reasoning of a difficult fight was that the party may not be able to repeat the huge majority of 41,778 votes won by the late Karpal Singh against BN’s candidate Teh Beng Yeam of MCA in the 2013 general election.

“After all who can match the irreplaceable Karpal?

Bukit Gelugor by-election on May 25

The first parliamentary by-election in Penang will take place on May 25 for the seat left empty with the death of Karpal Singh.

Nominations will take place on May 12, Election Commission chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof announced today.

DAP supremo Karpal Singh, who has been holding the seat since 2004, died in an accident along the North-South Expressway, near Kampar, on April 17.

Ramkarpal or Sangeet for Bukit Gelugor?

April 23, 2014

Whoever DAP picks will win the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat which fell vacant after the death of Karpal Singh in a car accident a week ago.

mmm

GEORGE TOWN: Speculation is rife that either Karpal Singh’s son Ramkarpal or daughter Sangeet Kaur Deo may be considered as candidate for the Bukit Gelugor by-election.

Another probable candidate is RSN Rayer, now Seri Delima assemblyman and a Karpal protégé.

But chances for Rayer could be slim as Karpal had clearly wanted one-man-one-seat policy.

But whoever DAP picks, the party should retain the urban seat which has 74% Chinese voters.

It is now whether Barisan Nasional will field a candidate or allow DAP to retain Bukit Gelugor without contest.

“Since it is a MCA seat, the party will decide whether to contest or not,” said Penang BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow.

“MCA will refer the matter to the Barisan Nasional leadership, either state, federal or both,” he told FMT today.

Many may see the Kajang by-election as a thrashing of Chew Mei Fun but MCA sees it as a victory because of the reduced majority.

This would be the second by-election to be contested by MCA this year, the first being in Kajang in March. Both Kajang and Bukit Gelugor are Pakatan Rakyat strongholds.

Will BN enter tiger’s den in Bukit Gelugor?

Will Barisan Nasional (BN) contest in the Bukit Gelugor by-election after the parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Karpal Singh?

BN has indirectly hinted that the party would likely contest the seat when its secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (right) said that it was up to BN’s component MCA to decide as the coalition will honour the existing agreement on the seats.

However, some think tank and politicians believe BN should reconsider contesting the seat where 74 percent of the voters are Chinese with the odds very much against BN.

“The odds are very much against them especially with sympathy votes expected from Penangites which means anybody contesting under DAP’s banner will definitely win. This is what we call sympathy surplus.

“This sympathy surplus will be much stronger if the next of kin of the late DAP national chairperson is being fielded such as his son Ramkarpal,” said Gerakan-linked think tank Socio Economic Development and Research Institute (Sedar) executive director Ivanpal S Grewal.

It would not be a bad idea for BN not to contest the seat and allow Ramkarpal or whoever from DAP to win like what happened when second Prime Minister Abdul Razak Hussein passed away in 1976.

However, some still believe that the BN should contest regardless of the uphill battle that the party has to face.

“There is no doubt DAP will win the by-election. However, BN still has to contest because as a political party you cannot just give a walkover,” said Penang-based political analyst Cheah See Kian.

“If you give a walkover to DAP, the people will laugh at you. As a political party, MCA can field one of their young candidates and put the party’s strategy to work. Win or lose is secondary,” he added.

Penang DAP prepares for Bukit Gelugor polls

The Penang DAP committee is preparing for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election, with the seat being left vacant by the death of Karpal Singh.

State DAP chairperson Chow Kon Yeow said the party has been told to prepare the statistics and logistics related to the seat, which Karpal had won with a thumping majority in the 13th general election on May 5 last year.

Chow said the party will meet on Thursday to discuss this, the same day that the Election Commission plans to hold a special meeting on the same matter.

Asked if Karpal’s lawyer son Ram Karpal (left) will be the candidate, Chow said “it is the prerogative of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) to decide on this”.

Asked if the state committee will submit its recommendations, he said: “We will submit names if asked. There are also Penangites in the CEC, and they know about the situation in Penang.”
