We grieve! Karpal Singh is dead. Long live his principles!
KARPAL SINGH LIVED HIS LIFE IN THE SERVICE OF OTHERS, PARTICULARLY THE DOWN-TRODDEN. He had compassion.
He had principles that he upheld through thick and thin.
Ramkarpal, the son, assumes Karpal’s place in Parliament, and will surely be true to his father’s principles.

One year on, Ramkarpal speaks about following in the footsteps of a giant
Barely a month after his death, Karpal’s third son, Ramkarpal, stepped into the footsteps of his father after winning the parliamentary seat of Bukit Gelugor in Penang.
“It wasn’t something we expected to happen this way,” Ram says of his start in Malaysian politics.
“It had always been in the back of my mind to enter the political arena, but there was no urgency.
“The circumstances surrounding it all were… well, there just aren’t any words to describe it,” said the 39-year-old lawyer.
Apart from being thrust into the political spotlight, Ram also juggled taking over his father’s legal firm.
“When you’re left in the deep end, you somehow have to learn to swim, and that’s what the past year has been about. Learning to swim.”

Karpal Singh’s longest day
In 1987 Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was struggling to achieve the rock-solid control of his ruling Umno political party that would inevitably come his way over the next decade.
…
To cut a long story short, on Oct 27, 1987 Karpal found himself swept up in Operation Lallang by Special Branch head Abdul Rahim Noor and detained indefinitely without trial under the Internal Security Act.
As soon as possible, following his arrest and first 60-day detention period in strict isolation at the Police Remand Centre near the Batu Caves, Karpal embarked upon a campaign of action to obtain his own freedom from Kamunting Detention Camp via a writ of habeas corpus.
On March 9, 1988, he managed to successful argue for his own release in front of a very brave judge, Justice Peh Swee Chin, in the High Court in Ipoh.
Arguing for his own freedom in the court, Karpal was at his flamboyant best.
To my mind, this was Karpal’s longest day. It was a day in which he would experience many different emotions from the euphoria of his release to the despair of rearrest later that night.
It was a day when he learned how his clients feel when they are both unexpectedly released and rearrested on the same day. I think that particular day made him very sensitive to the emotions his clients were going through for the remainder of his career.
Arguably the happiest three hours of his professional life as a lawyer were spent in the Long Bar at the Ipoh Club on that day.
His fellow lawyers, brother Manjit, Mariadas, Assamaley, Oh Choon Ghee and Kartar Singh were among the members of the profession called to the bar to celebrate Karpal’s shortlived freedom that day.
Free, but for how long? That was the question on Karpal’s mind as he and his family left the Ipoh Club at about 6pm for the two-hour drive to Penang, with driver Jeffrey at the wheel of their 300D Mercedes.
As we all know, Karpal’s freedom was short-lived on that particular day. It ended at a police roadblock outside the Nibong Tebal Police Station.

Ramkarpal makes debut in Parliament tomorrow, Mah returns after 6 years
Parliament will welcome a new member and two returning ones when it reconvenes tomorrow after a two-month break.
Newcomer Ramkarpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) will be sworn in together with Datuk Mah Siew Keong (BN-Teluk Intan) who is making a return to the House after a six-year absence.
The swearing-in will take place before the start of the business of the day, which is the Question and Answer session at 10am.
Lawyer Ramkarpal will be seated with other first-timers at Bloc F next to PKR’s Dr Azman Ismail (PKR-Kuala Kedah) while Gerakan president Mah will be among senior Barisan Nasional MPs at Bloc E next to MCA deputy president Datuk Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam).
…
Ramkarpal will be keenly watched by many as to whether he can carry on his father’s indomitable legacy. Karpal was known for speaking his mind on matters concerning the judiciary, law and safeguarding the Federal Constitution.
“I am still discussing with a few people on what topics to raise, but I’m definitely looking at the judiciary and youth development programmes,” he told The Malaysian Insider.
Ramkarpal’s debut will be eased somewhat by the presence of his older brother Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong), a two-term MP.
Parliament is also expected to observe a minute’s silence and record its condolences on the death of Karpal in a road accident on April 17.

Don’t be scared of 20 Umno samseng, says Anwar

BUKIT GELUGOR Pakatan Rakyat leaders came together last night in a show of force for the mini-finale in the Bukit Gelugor by-election campaign which ends at midnight today.
They were greeted by thousands who packed the Han Chiang College hall amid an air of festivities, with the crowd in high spirits, cheering loudly whenever the coalition’s top leaders arrived.
As Bukit Gelugor candidate Ramkarpal Singh arrived at 9pm, shouts of “Ramkarpal! Ramkarpal!” reverberated in the hall.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng received the same reception when he arrived at 9.43pm as the crowd chanted his name repeatedly.
Shouts of “Reformasi” accompanied by DAP, PKR and PAS flags were seen waving vigorously as PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim arrived at 9.50pm with a sling around his right arm, an injury which he sustained in a minor car accident last week.
…
Anwar spoke fiercely and at the top of his voice, telling Penangites not to be scared of the small group of samseng (gangsters) who forced their way into the Penang legislative assembly on Wednesday.
“Umno is getting desperate and lack issues – that is why they have the samsengs. Are you sacred of the 20 Umno samsengs who entered the Dewan? Don’t be scared of them!” he stormed.
“This is not ‘69 when the racial riots happened. This is not a battle for Umno but a battle for all Malaysians. This is not a fight only for the Malays or Chinese but for all Malaysians,” he added to loud cheers from the crowd.

Media ticked off for Ramkarpal ‘gay’ query
Malaysiakini
BUKIT GELUGOR Members of the press received a ticking off today by the DAP for insinuating that it’s Bukit Gelugor candidate Ramkarpal Singh is gay.
Ramkarpal’s family stated they had felt slighted after a member of the Chinese press directed the question “are you gay?” at the candidate yesterday.
The query arose after Parti Cinta Malaysia candidate Huan Cheng Guan questioned why photos of muscular men were uploaded on Ramkarpal’s Facebook page.
“He is 38 and still unmarried, do you feel there is anything wrong with that,” Huan had asked reporters.
Ramkarpal’s eldest brother Jagdeep Singh Deo said they were surprised when the reporter directed the question at his younger sibling.
He said the by-election is being held less than a month after Karpal’s untimely demise on Apr 17, which left the Bukit Gelugor seat vacant.
“Despite that, the press, whom Karpal had so much respect for, failed to execute their duties responsibly by weighing the facts properly,” Jagdeep, who is Dato’ Keramat assemblyperson said in the state assembly’s meeting room today.

I’m not gay! Ramkarpal responds to Huan
The Bukit Gelugor by-election has taken a queer turn with an opponent casting aspersion on DAP candidate Ramkarpal Singh’s sexual preference.
Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan is curious about the photographs of muscular men on Ramkarpal’s Facebook page.
“Why is Ramkarpal uploading many photos of muscular men on his FB
“He is 38 and still unmarried, do you feel there is anything wrong with that,” he said to reporters when met during his walkabout in Island Glades this morning.
Seeing red over the insinuation, Ramkarpal denied he was homosexual, adding that he was hoping to find a life partner soon.
Describing the insinuation as “nonsense”, the lawyer expressed regret that his opponent has resorted to such tactics
“He (Huan) has nothing (better) to do in his election campaign?” he added.

Isma is a disgrace to all Malaysians, says Ramkarpal
Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Ramkarpal Singh (pic) described Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) as an “obvious and unadulterated disgrace” to all Malaysians following the Muslim group’s remarks today that the DAP can cause another May 13.
“I use such strong words to describe Isma for it has the audacity to make comments like that… that the DAP is disuniting the people,” Ramkarpal told The Malaysian Insider.
Isma vice-president II Abdul Rahman Mat Dali was quoted as saying that the DAP is capable of causing another May 13 racial riot if the party was left unchecked.
He said this in an article titled “Between Isma and the DAP, which threatens national unity and harmony” that was published in the group’s website.
Abdul Rahman also said the DAP’s struggle had caused a lot of hurt and pain to the feelings of Muslims, demanding equal rights for all races and disputing Bumiputera rights.

`It’s like talking to Karpal’
Posted on 14 May 2014 – 11:19pm

GEORGE TOWN: Interviewing Ramkarpal Singh, DAP’s candidate for the Bukit Gelugor by-election, is very much like conversing with his father, the late Karpal Singh.
Not only do they share the same intensity when speaking on topics close to their heart, their mannerisms, dramatic pauses and vocal tones are almost a mirror match.
However, Ramkarpal is keen to come out from his father’s shadow.
Speaking to theSun while taking a break from his campaign rounds Wednesday, the 38-year-old lawyer said he would bring his own voice to Parliament if elected.
He said he had his own debating style and played down comments by some people that he was copying his dad.
He added that there were many issues he and his father shared, including defending the supremacy of the Federal Constitution, equal rights for all and on the hudud issue.
These were pressing matters and he was not starting from scratch to raise them.

GEORGE TOWN: A friendly tai chi chuan session with the people at the Island Glades for DAP candidate Ramkarpal Singh turned sour after a senior citizen let her anger out on him.
The 65-year-old woman, who only wanted to be known as Soo, vented her frustration over the early shut-off time for street lamps at the field near her area which has inconvenienced the residents there.
She said the street lamps were switched off as early as 5am, putting her tai chi group in danger and has caused accidents to morning joggers in area.
Ramkarpal, who appeared shocked and caught unaware, assured her that her complaint will be looked into.
Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer, who was accompanying him, said the timers of the street lamps were faulty due to the thunderstorms of late.
“The timers in these lights are faulty after lightning struck at it few days ago.
“We will fix this in the shortest time possible. On accidents, we will request the Works Department to install more speed breakers to help calm traffic in the area,” he said when contacted.

In one of the clearest indications that he would most likely be the Bukit Gelugor candidate, the late Karpal Singh’s third son Ramkarpal said quite confidently, “If all goes well, I must started speaking more in public.”

He confirmed that his name is certainly on DAP’s shortlist of candidates for the polls, fixed for May 25.

My last moments with Pa: Ramkarpal Singh
April 24, 2014
A week after the tragic crash that took the lives of veteran lawyer and politician Karpal Singh and his personal aide, Micheal Cornelius, his son Ramkarpal recounts the final hours with his father that fateful day. This is his story, as told to V. Anbalagan.
“My parents (Karpal and Gurmit) had gone to Pantai Hospital about 8pm on Wednesday (April 16) to visit my brother Gobind (Singh Deo) who was admitted.
They left about 8pm from my father’s office in Jalan Pudu Lama together with Micheal Cornelius and driver V. Selvam. The four returned home (in Bukit Ledang, Damansara) about 10pm and had dinner.
Pa, Michael, Selvam, our maid (Selfiana Rengga) and I were to leave that night for Penang. Pa and I were to appear in court the following day to represent a client charged with murder.
The weekend stay in Penang was also for Pa to meet his Bukit Gelugor constituents and prepare the petition of appeal for Anwar’s (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) sodomy case.

GEORGE TOWN: The DAP today refused to be drawn into speculation that Ramkarpal Singh (pix), son of the late Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh, has been slated to contest the seat left vacant by his father.
DAP national vice-chairman and Penang chairman, Chow Kon Yeow, said the party had yet to convene a meeting on the matter.

He said the party will issue a statement when necessary and gave an assurance that supporters and constituents will be informed.

Author: Ramkarpal to contest father’s seat
His death has left a huge void in both Malaysia’s courtrooms and political arena but the Tiger of Jelutong knew who should succeed him in the parliament seat of Bukit Gelugor.
It will come as no surprise that Karpal Singh had, in his steel-trap mind, a contingency plan if the government finally succeeded in imprisoning him on his recent sedition conviction.
If incarcerated and suspended from politics, Karpal planned for his successor to be the son who was with him in the car when he died, Ramkarpal.
Author of the 2013 biography “Karpal Singh – Tiger of Jelutong“, New Zealand journalist Tim Donoghue said he saw the veteran politician’s succession plan with his own eyes on the night before the May general election in 2013.
“There were about 100,000 people at the field in Penang. For some reason or another, the father said to the son, you should get up and address this crowd.
“I think he was saying, in his own mind, that he would very much like his successor in the electorate of Jelutong to be his son, Ramkarpal.”
…
“Karpal told me on a number of occasions, if and when he got nailed by the establishment in terms of losing the sedition appeal, his successor was very definitely Ramkarpal.

A message from Ramkarpal Singh, son of the late Karpal Singh.
Dear family and friends,
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of my family to express our gratitude and thanks for your kind thoughts and words in these very difficult and trying times. There have been so many messages that we have unfortunately been unable to attend to due to the circumstances.
The events that have unfolded in these last few days have been indescribable and challenging, to say the least. Though painful and heartbreaking, we are finding the strength to come to terms with them and your amazing support that we have been privileged to experience has proven invaluable.
My father fought the good fight and his untimely demise has not been in vain. It is imperative for that good fight to continue and there is no doubt in my mind that it will with your continued support.
Thank you again.
Ramkarpal Singh.
