Malacca treasures found — by foreign divers

MALACCA: Photographs showing foreign divers looting relics from a cavern in Pulau Nangka, a tiny isle off the coast here, has baffled Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.

The pictures that appeared in a bi-weekly Malay tabloid featured two divers, a male and a female, allegedly French nationals, holding relics of tortoise-shaped gold-plated bars and other ornaments in an underground waterway leading to the cave.

Beside the two divers, the pictures showed a local man claiming to be a bomoh (medium) posing with some of the relics.

“I am perplexed how the foreigners could salvage the relics from the cave while the firm commissioned by the state government to locate and excavate the treasure site has yet to locate the trove,” he told The Star yesterday.

Idris said he saw the pictures in the tabloid and was surprised as the photographs were real based on the surroundings.

He said the pictures were very recent and it showed the entrance of the cave.

Idris said he had asked his aides to authenticate the photographs and meet the local man in the picture.

Company told to end search for treasure on Pulau Nangka on Aug 1

JASIN: Syarikat Smart Partnership International (M) Sdn Bhd, which is searching for treasures allegedly left by the Malacca Sultanate on Pulau Nangka, is given until Aug 1 to conclude the search.

State Tourism, Development of River, Beach and Island Committee deputy chairman Datuk Ghazale Muhamad said the search should cease immediately if it was not fruitful.

He said the move was necessary in order to protect the ecosystem and nature on the island, which were feared affected due to the digging works in several areas on the island.

“The search must be stopped if in the period no concrete proof of the treasure is found.

“Let the island be as we do not want its natural ecosystem to be destroyed,” he told reporters during a visit to the island Tuesday.

Pulau Nangka, Pulau Besar and St Paul’s Hill form Sultan’s Treasuries, says expert

MALACCA: Pulau Nangka, Pulau Besar and St Paul’s Hill in Bandar Hilir here are believed to be areas where treasure was kept during the rule of the Malacca Sultanate.

Malaysian Institute of Patriotism and Historical Studies chairman Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Jamil Mukmin said the sultanate was believed to have kept the treasure in the three areas to prevent them from being seized if Malacca fell.

However, he said there was no proof currently showing there was treasure in the Pulau Besar and St Paul’s Hill areas except the findings of porcelain artefacts in the Bandar Hilir area near St Paul’s Hill other than the search for treasure being focused in the three areas.

Salvage company denies planting ancient coins at treasure site

JASIN: A company engaged to look for hidden treasures of the Melaka sultanate in Pulau Nangka today dismissed an allegation that it had planted the two ancient coins found there last week.

Smart Partnership International (M) Sdn Bhd said the coins were found by its workers while they were drilling through a stone wall on the island.

Its managing director, Mohammad Foad Khushairy Mohd Said, told reporters on the island that the company handed the coins to the Melaka Museums Corporation to verify its authenticity.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron had said he was not convinced that the coins were artifacts found on Pulau Nangka.

Mohammad Foad said it was believed that the entrance to a cave containing the hidden treasures was located below several huge boulders which the company was in the process of removing.

CM: Old coins will be tested

ARTEFACTS: Two coins not considered treasure until verification, says Idris Haron

MALACCA: It is too early to associate the discovery of two ancient coins by a company carrying out excavation works in Pulau Nangka on Wednesday with the ‘billion ringgit treasure’ believed to be buried there from the time of the Malacca Sultanate.

Even Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron has reservations about the origins of the coins.

He said it could not be immediately ascertained that the coins were part of the ‘billion ringgit’ treasure said to be hidden in the island until further testing to verify its authenticity was concluded.

“The coins could have probably been dropped off or intentionally left behind by certain quarters, so this requires detailed investigations.

“Furthermore, ancient materials, such as coins, can be found anywhere in the state and not necessarily only on the island,” Idris told reporters after meeting 60 former participants of the 1976 Ship for South East Asian Youth Programme at his official residence, Seri Bendahara, here yesterday.

Malacca treasure no longer a myth

MALACCA: A scene out of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves may be played out soon in present-day Malacca. The door to a cavern in which priceless treasure dating back more than five centuries is believed to be buried, has been found.

In echoes of folklore, there are symbols to be decoded to gain entry into the cave on Pulau Nangka, an islet 17km off the coast here.

Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron is expected to be present to help decipher the symbols carved outside the cave.

“State government officials and the Malacca Governor are planning to visit the island on April 28 in a bid to open the door,” said Idris.

Pictorial evidence provided by Smart Partnership International Sdn Bhd, the company appointed by the state government to undertake excavation there, has revealed that the treasure, said to be worth billions of ringgit, is stored in some 20 chambers inside the cave.

“The treasure is no longer a myth,” said Idris after chairing the weekly exco meeting.

MALACCA: About 70% of work to identify if there is treasure buried in a cavern on Pulau Nangka has been completed, and the race is on to finish the job by the end of this month.

Mohammad Fuad Khushairy Mohd Said, director of Smart Partnership International (M) Sdn Bhd – one of two firms commissioned to verify the treasure’s existence – said the number of workers would be increased from 23 to 40.

He said the company had been using state-of-the-art scanning technology to find alternative points to the chambers.

Meanwhile, Perzim general manager Datuk Khamis Abas said Smart Partnership International had only up to the month’s end to substantiate the existence of treasures or relics with pictorial evidence.

Pulau Nangka, a little isle off Malacca, has become the venue of a billion-ringgit treasure hunt. An ancient treasure trove holding many chests of gold bars, a throne and royal regalia is reportedly buried in a cave.

MALACCA: Treasure said to be worth billions is believed to be buried inside a cave on Pulau Nangka, a tiny island 17km off the coast here.

Among the items believed to be in the ancient treasure trove are chests of gold bars, a throne and royal regalia.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the state government has given permits to two local companies to carry out excavation work under strict conditions set by Malacca Museum Corporation (Perzim).

“For now, they have only been authorised to collect pictorial evidence,” he said.

Idris said the treasure on the island had been rumoured for centuries and there had been many attempts by treasure hunters, some of whom had used dynamite to blow up boulders, to get to the cavern.

“It is not scientific, but locals believe there are mystical obstacles preventing the treasure from being taken,” the chief minister said.

Could the treasure be Sultan Mahmud’s riches?

MALACCA: Among the theories surrounding the reported buried treasure in Pulau Nangka is that it could be part of a fortune stashed away by the last Sultan of Malacca.

Sultan Mahmud is said to have fled with most of his gold bullion before the Portuguese conquered Malacca in 1511 and for centuries, the story that it was hidden somewhere nearby has refused to die down.

History books say Sultan Mahmud had tried to retake Malacca unsuccessfully on several occasions, probably because of the wealth that he had left behind.

According to 16th Century Portuguese historian Fernão Lopes de Castanheda’s description of the conquest, the soldiers who plundered the city after the victory could not find the Sultan’s reputed riches.
