AT LAST, WATER!

Rationing brings relief

PETALING JAYA: Residents of Balakong are relieved that water rationing has been implemented as it has provided them with running water after being plagued by dry taps for almost 18 days.

For people in Taman Impian Ehsan, Balakong, there was water supply to their homes, although due to the rationing schedule it would only be for two days.

“The water supply resumed at about 11.30am, and the first thing I did was to enjoy a shower. The water was dirty at first, but cleared up fast,” said housewife Siti Azimah, 37.

“It is such a relief to be able to take a shower after almost two weeks. I have filled up all the water containers at home so that we will have water to use when the supply is cut off tomorrow or the day after. I’m glad I do not have to go and queue up for water and wait for the tankers.”

She said her family would still be careful with the water they have stored as they want to be prepared when supply stops.

“We are only using water for essential things like drinking and bathing,” she added.

It’s Day 17 without water for Balakong!

17 days of dry taps

BALAKONG: It is Day 17 of dry taps and the prolonged drought in the country is taking its toll, especially on tempers and the health of the people in this area.

They are frustrated and angry at the predicament they find themselves in. And with good reason.

Many have to carry water in buckets, plastic bottles and all sorts of other containers over distances, and for some, these precious supplies must be lugged up flights of stairs.

Mohd Isa Hamzah, 33, a resident at Taman Impian Ehsan, said he had fallen ill from all the times he had to gather water from public pipes and other filling points, and then heave the containers to his third-floor apartment.

“I have fever and body aches that started a few days ago,” he said. He has a wife and two young children.

He was also suffering from insufficient rest, he said, because the water tankers sent by Syabas made their rounds at irregular times and mostly in the wee hours.

Selangor residents can expect water supply every two days

SHAH ALAM: Residents in Selangor who have been without water for the past few weeks can expect supply every two days.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the “rationing” will start today, when the water company Syabas is due to give details of the exercise.

The “scheduled distribution” – as SPAN, the National Water Services Commission, calls it – will affect Ulu Langat and Kuala Langat, where taps have been dry since Feb 7 in some 42,000 households.

Businesses – including food stalls and restaurants, laundries and hair dressing saloons – in the two districts have also been badly affected by the prolonged supply disruption.

Khalid said Syabas tankers and static tanks would also be sent to affected areas during the rationing, and added that the exercise would continue until the rainy season, which is not expected until the middle of next month.

If the rainy season came earlier, the rationing would be discontinued, he added.

SPAN said the Selangor Government had ordered Syabas to activate an emergency plan, including scheduled water distribution to consumers in the affected areas.

It had approved the application from Syabas to implement the measure following a meeting of all the parties.

SPAN appealed to consumers in affected areas to “work with Syabas to implement the scheduled water distribution.”

For how long do we have to put up with this?

They also affect our children’s future.

You see, my son, like hundreds of his schoolmates, were denied education for five days as his school in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn was forced to close because water pipes leading to the school carried only air.

While I am thankful that I have shed a few kilogrammes, no thanks to some serious daily weightlifting that involves pails and three flights of stairs to my apartment unit, the frustration is building at a rather quick pace.

It doesn’t help that me and the many others I know have to constantly worry about the elderly and disabled under our roof.

My neighbours and I are hoping that our precious supply will return soon, before we tumble down the stairs with our pails of water.

Syabas should have a contingency plan and not wait until someone yells down the phone to demand their water. NSTP/Azhar Ramli

‘Does Syabas want us to die?’ Anger floods Balakong

With taps running dry for the past 10 days, tempers are flaring in Balakong, where some 20,000 residents have been left in a quandary.

The areas affected by the water shortage are Taman Impian Ehsan, Taman Impian Indah and Kampung Kenangan Indah.

A trader, who declined to be named, claimed that Syabas did not provide notice about the problem.

Furthermore, he claimed that the lorries which have been transporting water do not come at a specific time and when the vehicles arrive, the supply is insufficient.

“Do they (Syabas) want us to die? They don’t send enough water… There are thousands of people living here.

“We have to travel all the way to Kajang to get water. It has been like this for days. If this goes on, we will die,” he told Malaysiakini, which visited the area yesterday.

Civil servant Mohd Nor Asnan Awang, 33, who lives in a walk-up apartment, lamented that he has been forced to carry drums of water up to the third floor on a daily basis.

Syabas water tankers hijacked

Foreigners hijacked the Syabas water tanker for their use in Taman Impian Ehsan, Balakong.- China Press

KUALA LUMPUR: As the water cut in Balakong, Selangor reached Day Seven, things were turning ugly with foreign residents hijacking Syabas water tankers during its rounds to distribute water.

Syabas corporate communications assistant general manager Priscilla Alfred confirmed that at 7pm on Friday, their tanker WNP 9067 was sending water to Block J and K at the apartments in Taman Setia Balakong when a resident from another block started brandishing a switchblade.

“He was not happy that our tanker did not stop at his place. At that time, the tanker was heading to Block J and K before going to Block H and I.

“However, the residents’ committee managed to intervene to help ease the tension,” she said, adding that a police report had been lodged.

Balakong assemblyman Eddie Ng told The Star that the residents in the area had claimed of other violent encounters with foreigners and Syabas tankers.

“I was told by the residents that on some occasions, the tankers would be ambushed by foreigners with parang.

“They would threaten the driver and ask them to go to their residence first to distribute the water.”
