Report of Bible distribution outside Penang school is false, says councillor
The Penang government has refuted claims that Malay Bibles were distributed to students at a school in the state, calling it an “extreme provocation” by irresponsible parties.
State religious exco Datuk Abdul Malik Kassim said today after the state government had conducted its investigations and found the allegation to be false.

“This report is not only confusing but it has created doubts because it is understood that until today, no police report has been made over the matter,” Abdul Malik said in a statement.
“And according to the state CID chief Superintendent Mazlan Kesah, the three men said to have been caught by the PTA president were also not handed over to the police.” – February 20, 2014.

Top cop warns against jumping to conclusions in religious heat

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 19 ― As Penang reels from a series of racial and religious attacks, the country’s Number Two policeman warned Malaysians today against making assumptions that could incite further provocation.
“We are investigating these cases in the perspective of the law and we will take action appropriately so I hope the public will refrain from raising racially sensitive issues,” Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin told reporters after announcing the police’s latest RM4.5 million drug bust here.
He was referring to the controversial banners featuring the word “Allah” that were hung from outside four church compounds, the firebombing of the Church of the Assumption in the state capital, the desecration of a mosque in Bukit Mertajam and a blog that claimed the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state government planned to ban the obligatory Friday sermons.
The police have yet to arrest anyone.

MP denies behind mosque attack, says Facebook page bid to destabilise Penang

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 19 ― Claiming slander, DAP’s Steven Sim filed a police report today over a Facebook page that linked him to the recent desecration of a mosque in Bukit Mertajam.
The Bukit Mertajam MP denied he was behind the Sunday incident in which a piece of raw pork was found in the mosque compound, and instead said the allegations against him were an attempt to rock the peace in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state.
“This is the latest in a series of incidents aimed at creating chaos and instability in the state,” Sim told The Malay Mail Online when contacted.
The Facebook page under the name “Boikot Barangan Cina DAP” showed a picture of Sim under the headline “Cina lontar daging babi depan pintu masjid Bukit Mertajam” [Chinese lobbed pork in front of Bukit Mertajam mosque entrance) on February 17.

A Facebook page called “Boikot Barangan Cina DAP” has weighed in on the incident where a slab of meat, believed to be pork, was left at the entrance of the Cheruk Tok Kun Atas mosque in Penang on Sunday.
The owner of the page posted photos of the meat and included pictures of Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim of DAP and opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the same page.
The posting titled “Cina Lontar Daging Babi Depan Pintu Masjid” (Chinese tossed pork in front of mosque entrance) also came with statements that implied that Sim was involved in the incident.
The first-time MP lodged a police report over the posting this morning at the Seberang Prai Tengah police headquarters together with Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari and Seberang Jaya assemblyman and state exco Dr Afif Bahardin.
“This latest incident with the Facebook page is slanderous and provocative,” he said in a joint statement with Zairil and Dr Afif.
The trio, who are all first-time elected reps, said Penang has seen a series of controversial incidents over the past month, which “conspired” to bring down the Pakatan Rakyat state government.

Racial attacks ratchet up pressure in Penang
Penang Pakatan Rakyat leaders have lodged a police report over another provocative Facebook page that accuses DAP parliamentarian Steven Sim of having thrown a piece of pork into the compound of a mosque in Bukit Mertajam.
The page, with the headline ‘Boycott DAP Chinese Goods’, a picture of Sim with the caption, ‘Chinese threw pork into the Bukit Mertajam mosque’.
“This is slanderous and provocative,” Sim told reporters after lodging the report at the Bandar Perda police station today.
He was accompanied by the DAP’s Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari and PKR’s Seberang Jaya assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin.

Guan Eng condemns ‘pork-throwing’ incident
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has condemned the incident where a slab of meat, believed to be pork, was hurled into a mosque in Bukit Mertajam at dawn today.
Lim said the “treacherous act” was done to provoke disunity and destroy the multi-racial and multi-religious harmony that Malaysians have been enjoying since Independence in 1957.
He urged Penangites to remain calm and continue their multi-racial and multi-religious approach to maintain harmony within the community.
“This is the only way to defeat the provocateurs and the criminals who are out to provoke disunity among us,” Lim said, after visiting the Cherok Tokun mosque.

Parent-Teacher Association chairman says Bibles distributed to students in Penang
Three men have been found handing out Christian material containing the word “Allah” to students at a school in George Town, Penang, a Malay daily reported today.
Sinar Harian claimed that the three men were caught by Sekolah Menengah Haji Zainal Abidin Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Nor Amin Ahmad.
Nor Amin claimed that the three men had been distributing Bibles at a neighbouring school.
“The title of the Bible was ‘Kenalilah Alkitab’ (Know the Bible). At the bottom, it is written ‘Sebuah Panorama Firman Allah dalam 366 bacaan dan renungan harian’,” Nor Amin told Sinar Harian.
That translates into “The Word of God in 366 daily readings and reflections.
He questioned why such material was being distributed to students. It is especially more confusing as it is in Bahasa Malaysia, Nor Amin said.
He alleged that the distribution of such material was a blatant attempt to subvert the faith of Muslim students.
Nor Amin added that there have been acts of proselytisation among the students themselves.
However, Sinar Harian’s report failed to specify if the students who had received the material were Muslims.
Nor did the report specify whether the three men had been arrested for distributing the Bibles.

GEORGETOWN – Seorang guru menangkap tiga lelaki yang cuba mengedar beberapa Bible berbahasa Melayu kepada pelajar di sebuah sekolah di sini.
Pengerusi Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru (PIBG) Sekolah Menengah Haji Zainal Abidin, Nor Amin Ahmad berkata, kejadian berkenaan berlaku di sekolah berkenaan yang jaraknya tidak jauh dari sekolah itu.
Pihaknya kesal kerana Bible dalam bahasa Melayu itu juga tertulis perkataan ALLAH yang dibimbangi boleh mengelirukan pelajar sekolah.
“Tajuk kitab itu ialah Kenalilah Al Kitab dan di bahagian bawahnya mereka cuba menarik pembaca dengan menulis ‘Sebuah panorama Firman ALLAH dalam 366 bacaan dan renungan harian’.
“Kenapa kitab sedemikian cuba diedarkan kepada pelajar? Lebih mengelirukan kerana ia dalam bahasa Melayu. Jadi memang (jelas) matlamatnya untuk memesongkan akidah pelajar Melayu Islam,” katanya kepada Sinar Harian.
Nor Amin menggesa pihak sekolah memantau lebih ketat, khasnya pengawal keselamatan yang ditugaskan menjaga keselamatan sekolah.

Suspected pork meat thrown into mosque
A slab of meat, believed to be pork, had reportedly been hurled into the entrance of the Cherok Tokun mosque in Machang Bubuk this morning.
According to state CID chief Mazlan Kesah, he said the suspect is believed to have used the main road and allegedly threw the meat at the venue at about 5.30am.
Deputy imam Saad Arop, 78, said as he was entering the mosque at about 5.30am to perform his dawn prayers, he saw a slab of meat at the entrance of the area.
“He lodged a report because he felt dissatisfied with the incident and suspects that it is pork,” said Mazlan in a text message reply about the incident.
“This is the first time it has happened at the mosque. He does not suspect anyone,” Mazlan stressed.
