Elephant latest to die in #Indonesia zoo; critics demand overhaul at Surabaya ‘zoo of death’
…

…
BANDUNG (AFP/Reuters) – A critically endangered Sumatran elephant has become the latest animal to die in one of Indonesia’s ill-maintained zoos, an official said on Thursday (May 12), sparking anger from activists and politicians.
The female elephant, called Yani, died in the city of Bandung on Java island Wednesday after falling ill a week earlier.
Many of the country’s zoos are in poor condition and house animals in filthy, cramped enclosures. The most notorious, in the city of Surabaya, has been dubbed the “death zoo” as hundreds of animals have perished there.
Bandung zoo said the cause of Yani’s death was yet to be determined, but the creature appeared lethargic before she died and pictures showed large sores on her body.
Efforts to save the elephant were hampered as the zoo had been without a resident veterinarian for almost a year, zoo spokesman Sudaryo admitted.
But the spokesman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, insisted the zoo had done all it could by consulting an outside vet and elephant-keeper and providing medicines.
Bandung mayor Ridwan Kamil visited the sick elephant before it died, as anger mounted about the case, and urged the privately-run zoo to seek outside help.
“If they don’t have the budget to manage (the zoo), they should seek support,” he said.
An online petition calling for the zoo to be cleaned up, which has gathered over 10,000 signatures, said animals there looked emaciated and cages were dirty and rusty.

Second Komodo dragon dies at Indonesian ‘death zoo’

A Komodo dragon died Monday at an Indonesian zoo infamous for hundreds of animal deaths in recent years, an official said.
It was the second of the creatures — which are the world’s largest living lizards and have a venomous bite — to die this year at Surabaya zoo, on the main island of Java.
Zoo official Liang Kaspe said the lizard was found dead in its cage in the morning and it was still unclear what the cause was, adding that it may have ingested some kind of poison.
Surabaya zoo, Indonesia’s largest, has been dubbed “death zoo” because so many animals have perished there prematurely in recent years owing to neglect, including orangutans, a tiger and a giraffe.
Monday’s death came after a Komodo dragon died at the zoo in February.
The management of the zoo has been taken over by the Surabaya city administration, but the deaths have not stopped and animal welfare groups continue to call for its closure.

Two more animals die at Surabaya Zoo
Fri, February 21 2014 21:01 | 882 Views
Surabaya (ANTARA News) – An African buffalo and baboon reportedly died at the Surabaya Zoo, in East Java.
“The two animals died due to old age,” KBS zoo spokesman Agus Supangat stated here on Friday.
He added that the female African baboon died at around 2 a.m., on Thursday, while the African buffalo died at around 7a.m., on the same day.
He claimed that before their deaths, the animals were ill and under quarantine where they were treated and monitored round the clock.
Based on autopsy results, the African buffalo, named Nike, died when his lungs malfunctioned and joints suffered damage, while the baboon died due to lymph and liver disorders, for which it was being treated for the past six weeks.
“The female baboon was the last of its species at the zoo. After her death, we now have no baboons. With regard to African buffaloes, there are only two remaining at the zoo,” he emphasized.
The two animals were among the 84 animals that were reportedly under critical condition.

Another Dead Deer Found at Surabaya Zoo
By Jakarta Globe on 8:23 pm February 13, 2014.
Jakarta. A deer was found dead at the Surabaya’s “nightmare zoo” on Thursday morning, just a week after the death of a rare Bengal tiger prompted renewed calls to shutter the notorious facility.
A zoo keeper found the dead body of an 8-year-old doe in its cage at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. An autopsy was performed on its remains later the same day.
“Its stomach became swollen, causing pressure [to build] on its lungs and heart,” Liang Kaspe, the operational director of the zoo, told Indonesia news portal Tempo.co on Thursday, citing the autopsy results.
She explained that the deer’s lungs were red-colored, and that foam was found in its throat.
“Those [symptoms] are not indications of poisoning,” Liang said.
The veterinarian blamed bad weather for the death, saying torrential rains had soaked the grass fed to the deer. Wet grass, Liang said, can cause excess gas to build up in the deer’s stomach.
Earlier in the day, zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat said, citing a keeper, that the deer had looked “healthy and normal” the day before.
The death of the deer came just a week after a 17-year-old white Bengal tiger was found dead, reportedly due to pneumonia and old age.
…
It was the second time a deer died at the zoo over the past month. A pregnant doe was found dead on Jan. 31, reportedly due to a miscarriage.
The zoo now hosts 19 deers and more than 3,400 other animals. Nearly 80 of the animals are in poor health because of age or illness, according to the zoo.

Row brewing over Indonesia’s ‘zoo of death’

A male giraffe died an agonising death at Indonesia’s Surabaya Zoo, with 20kg of plastic found in his stomach, in 2012. Three months later, a 30-year-old female elephant died after living with a broken leg for two years.
So far this year six animals have died at Indonesia’s largest zoo, in East Java province, including a protected three-year-old Komodo dragon and an African lion called Michael, found with his head caught in a cable in his enclosure.
Following animal deaths that go back to 2010, the most recent incidents have reinforced the park’s reputation as a ‘zoo of death’.
The tragic stories have triggered public anger, allegations of corruption, and even drawn a possible presidential candidate into the controversy.
“Mismanagement at Surabaya Zoo has gone on for too long and the animals are suffering,” said Rosek Nursahid, head of the conservation group ProFauna Indonesia.
