NO SYARIAH! Do you hear a sigh of relief?

“There will not be a special Syariah police unit. Instead of assisting the departments on an ad hoc basis, the police are planning to station officers there permanently,” he reportedly said today.

No Syariah unit, but cops based at Islamic Depts

Police officers will be “permanently stationed” with the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and state religious departments to assist them, said Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.

Star Online quoted him as saying that the number of officers involved and duration of the secondment are still being discussed.

He said this when clarifying media reports that a special Syariah police unit is to be set up.

IGP For Religious Police Identified

Well if there is going to be a Religious Police there has to be an IGP to be in charge of them as well. I think I have found the right candidate to assume this position of IGP of Religious Police. Do read on.

…..

Anyway here is the candidate for the IGP of this religious police. She hails from Malacca. Here is the story from The Star :

  • MALACCA: woman nearly assaulted by female security guard enraged by dress
  • Fatimah Abdullah claimed the guard, 40s, scolded her for wearing “tight” clothing
  • guard wanted to hit her before she was stopped by a teacher and a clerk
  • I was wearing my uniform at the time when I came at the office.
  • I believed that she wanted to hit me, stopped by teacher and clerk
  • lodged report at Tanjung Keling police station, no response so far
  • state education department would be asked to carry out a probe

Siapa OCPD Tanjong Keling? Pasal apa tak ada response lagi?

Anyway I think that female security guard fits the bill perfectly to become the IGP of the Religious Police :

i.    tendency to act violently against people
ii.   willing to inflict physical harm on people
iii.  cannot think rationally
iv.  possibly body weight higher than IQ

‘Syariah police not taking over states’ role’

ENFORCEMENT: They are only meant to assist state religious officers, says Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: THE syariah police unit will assist state religious officers to enforce Islamic laws, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said yesterday.

However, the special unit’s duties and responsibilities will not overlap with those of the religious authorities as its primary focus was to assist religious enforcement officers.

“If religious officers need help, the unit will be deployed.

“It will help to carry out enforcement activities.”

He stressed that the unit would not be taking over a state’s legal authority in administering Islamic affairs.

Poser over Syariah police force

PETALING JAYA (Jan 26, 2014): The proposed formation of a Syariah police unit has come under question in the legal circle with queries on its constitutionality and enforcement role.

Constitutional expert Syahredzan Johan said if the rationale offered for its formation was taken in context, it would mean the unit may possibly be used on religious minorities and voices critical of Islam.

“The announcement comes with the statement that Islam is under threat from groups like Comango (Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the UPR process) and minorities such as the Shiites. The unit may be used to take action against these groups,” Syahredzan said.

“Islamic religious authorities do not have authority over non-Muslims, but the unit may now possibly be used to get around it; it is certainly a foreseeable situation,” Syahredzan said when commenting on a report that the police force was working with the Home Ministry and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) on setting up the unit.

Bar Council human Rights Committee chairman Andrew Khoo viewed the effort as a form of “militarisation”.

“The police themselves already have many complaints levelled against them. A unit that will possibly be trained and educated by the force will only create more issues in enforcement.’

Khoo pointed out that Jakim is not an enforcement entity and it would be unconstitutional if the police are to train officials from the department.

The setting up of the syariah police unit will be finalised soon, Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) Director-General Datuk Othman Mustafa said today.

He said the department, the Home Ministry and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would meet soon to discuss the matter.
