Court to appoint ‘hakam’in Nurul’s divorce case

The marital status of Lembah Pantai member of parliament, Nurul Izzah Anwar remained unchanged despite her bid to obtain a divorce.
Her husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim, 35, told reporters that he refused to utter the ‘talak’ or pronouncement of divorce when the case was brought for mention in chambers today before Syarie judge Ab Malek Awang.
“I did not agree to divorce my wife as I still love her and the children,” he told reporters later.
Nurul Izzah was present at the proceeding which lasted 40 minutes.
…
The syarie counsel said he had asked for a new mediation date but this was objected to by Nurul Izzah’s counsel Nor Mawaddah Ramli.
Azmi said the court sustained the objection and fixed Dec 8 for appointment of a ‘hakam’.
The hakam is a committee appointed by the Syariah Court to advise the husband on pronouncing the divorce and if he still refused, the former will utter the talak in his place.

Nurul Izzah insisted on divorcing husband, states reconciliation report
KUALA LUMPUR: Attempts at a reconciliation between Nurul Izzah Anwar and her husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim failed as the Lembah Pantai MP insisted on pressing ahead with the divorce, according to a reconciliation committee report.
In the report, read out in the Lower Syariah Court here by judge Ab Malek Awang, Nurul Izzah’s representative Rosli Ibrahim said efforts to reconcile the couple turned futile as Nurul Izzah wanted to proceed with the divorce.
…
The report further stated that the next course of action was up to the Court, without any room for reconciliation as both parties were standing their ground.
Judge Ab Malek later fixed Aug 7 for mention on whether the Court would appoint hakam(arbitrators) for the duo or to continue with other rulings.
The judge also instructed the reconciliation committee report be given to Nurul Izzah and Raja Ahmad.

Nurul Izzah’s divorce case mention on March 11
The Nurul Izzah Anwar-Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar divorce case that was scheduled before the Syariah High Court in Kuala Lumpur today, has been put off to March 11.
Nurul Izzah’s lawyer Normawaddah Ramli said the two parties are still negotiating to resolve the matter amicably.
“The case has been fixed for mention on March 11,” she said.
Raja Ahmad, who walked in by a side entrance (for witnesses) at 10.28am, immediately after entered judge Abdul Malek Awang’s chambers with his lawyer, Muhamad Nakhaie Ishak.
Nurul Izzah submitted her application under Section 47 of the Federal Territory Islamic Family Law Act 1984 last December.
This application is not fasakh (annulment of marriage) as reported by some media but divorce by mutual agreement (permohonan penceraian secara baik).

Heated debate on Nurul Izzah’s marriage shows the reality of things
PETALING JAYA: The hot debate in cyberspace over the petition filed by PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar to annul her marriage reflects the reality that public figures cannot escape the glare of attention.
The 33-year-old Lembah Pantai MP had sought to end her marriage to Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar, 35, via a fasakh petition at the lower Syariah Court in Jalan Duta in December.
Vanitha Nadaraj, a news portal editor, took to Facebook to explain she could not accept the arguments for Nurul Izzah to be left alone and not have her privacy encroached upon.
“News is news. And if that means reporting about an application for divorce by one of the sweetest public figures around, so be it,” she said.
Netizen Napsiah Wan Salleh said: “Public figures can’t pick and choose the type of publicity they want.”
Kamazuki Junuh said having one’s personal problems in the limelight was part and parcel of being a public figure.
…
“Politicians deserve their own space, much as we like to know what the crux of the matter is,” said Wahre Herze.
“Divorce is divorce, politics is politics. Don’t try to mix them both as it is totally a different thing from each other,” said netizen Sean Hong.

Reputation at stake, will the princess survive?

ANALYSIS Although a private matter, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar’s decision to file a petition to annul her marriage may have political ramifications.
Thrust into the limelight at the tender age of 18, her untainted ‘Puteri Reformasi’ image helped carry her across the finish line in both the 2010 party polls and two subsequent general elections.
But circumstances surrounding her petition, alleged in both news reports and blogs, could soil her reputation.
In reporting the petition, several news organisations linked Nurul to another man, with one news portal delving into items of gossip, but later removing the salacious but unattributed information from its original article.
Some have even described the mother of two as having the potential to be the country’s first woman prime minister. But will she able to emerge from this storm intact? And as a key leader in PKR, what kind of impact will this have on the party?
Speaking on condition of anonymity, party insiders close to her agreed that whether or not the rumours are true, the timing of the petition was bad.
With nominations for party polls expected in March, Nurul had handed detractors both within and outside PKR ammunition by choosing to file her petition late last month.
…
One member who studies PKR’s electoral support said that while the divorce petition is not a concern, allegations of a third party could diminish support particularly among Malays.
He said Malay society has different standards for male and female politicians – and a woman who is rumoured to have strayed from home would be judged more harshly.

The source also rubbished claims that Nurul was involved in extra-marital relationship, as claimed by one online news portal.
“This is a completely unfounded allegation. I know who Nurul is and this allegation is baseless and absurd,” the source added.
The source disclosed that the accusation that Nurul, who is the Lembah Pantai MP, was having an affair and thus seeking a divorce had come from people within her own party in an attempt to discredit her.
