IS THE SHUT DOWN OF FELDA COLLEGES IMMINENT?

The colleges are coveted by settlers as it is an opportunity to learn a skill on the cheap and employment is almost guaranteed as the plantation giant will absorb its graduates.

The students are only required to pay a one-time fee of RM250, with boarding, food and school fees subsidised by Felda.

The Felda colleges provide vocational training in different fields for up to six months before hiring most of its graduates int one of its company’s arms.

Malaysian palm oil giant Felda is mulling over the shutdown of Yayasan Felda colleges as part of budget cuts this year, delivering a blow to some 1,000 settlers’ children enrolled in the affected educational institutions.

The Malaysian Insider understands that director-general of Felda Datuk Faizoull Ahmad has decided to slash funding to RM5 million this year to operate all four colleges, although the annual cost of operations is roughly RM16 million.

Sources said due to the budget cut, colleges located in Kelana Jaya (Selangor), Trolak (Perak), Mempaga (Pahang) and Raja Alias (Negri Sembilan) would most likely face closure once the management makes public its decision.

The sources said that a final decision on the college budget would be determined at a Felda board meeting next week, but added that odds are Faizoull would bulldoze his decision to close the college.

Attempts by The Malaysian Insider to meet Faizoull for comments were declined although he had earlier promised a meeting.

City and Guilds to recognise Felda courses

SEREMBAN: This year will herald a new chapter for Felda as skills and technical courses offered by Yayasan Felda Colleges (KYF) will be endorsed by London-based City and Guilds.

The United Kingdom’s leading vocational certificate awarding body will begin endorsing the courses in stages.

Felda chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad said the foundation’s collaboration with the body was part of Felda’s efforts to develop its colleges to higher levels.

At present, said Isa, only English courses provided by the Felda colleges in Kelana Jaya in Selangor, Felda Mempaga (Pahang), Felda Raja Alias (Negri Sembilan) and Felda Trolak (Perak) were recognised by City and Guilds.

“So far, the hospitality courses at Felda Mempaga as well as hair dressing and sewing courses in Felda Raja Alias are (in the process of) being endorsed while plans are underway for endorsing all other courses in the colleges.

“After receiving the required qualification at KYF, the students will have the opportunity to study at West Cheshire College (in the UK).

“If they do well, they can then advance their studies at the University of Chester,” he said.

Felda, said Isa, allocated RM16 million for educational development.

Isa Samad: Rm40m allocated for skills training schemes involving children of Felda settlers

KUALA LUMPUR: Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV) and the Felda Board allocate RM40 million to Yayasan Felda in order to carry out development programmes for Felda settlers every year.

Felda chairman Tan Sri Isa Samad said from the total amount, Yayasan Felda would set aside RM17 million for skills training schemes and programmes involving the children of Felda settlers.

“Therefore, we plan to improve the proficiency of training and skills programmes at Yayasan Felda Colleges (KYF) as well as improve the certification process by KYF.

“We are working closely with examination boards issuing vocational certificates based in the United Kingdom, namely City & Guilds, to meet the criteria for recognition since their certificates are recognised globally,” he told reporters after opening the KYF graduation session for 2/2013 at Menara Felda, here today.

Felda Global Ventures Bhd: Since its listing on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE), it has come under public scrutiny.

Felda, or the Federal Land Development Authority, is a government agency that has some 113,000 settlers working in rubber and oil palm plantations in the country. Its commercial arm Felda Holdings Bhd successfully launched the world’s second-largest IPO in 2012 for its unit Felda Global Ventures Bhd.

Felda Global Ventures is now the third largest palm oil company in the world by planted acreage. In Malaysia alone, it controls more than 850,000ha, which includes the roughly 500,000ha that it leases and manages for Felda settlers.
