EVEN with the bad press of several people being lost or seriously injured, Bukit Tabur in Taman Melawati, Gombak continues to attract avid hikers as well as thrill seekers. But, experts have advised caution when attempting to tackle the challenging hill.

Bukit Tabur in Taman Melawati, Gombak is popular among hikers because of its scenic view overlooking the Klang Gate Dam and the KL skyline.

The 396m Bukit Tabur is located within the jurisdiction of the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS). However, the management and maintenance of the hill falls under the purview of the Selangor Forestry Department.

Due to its vicinity to the city centre, many hikers regularly attempt to climb the hill on weekends.

“The view from the top is beautiful and the hike can be done in half a day, so that is why many hikers are drawn to it,” said K.M. Leo, 50, a regular hiker on Tabur. “But you can’t afford to make a mistake on Tabur.

“Its rugged terrain, razor-shaped rocks and vertical drops are unforgiving. All it takes is a slip and you could tumble like a rag doll into the ravine.

On steep sections, hikers have put up safety ropes to help climbers but these ropes are not maintained regularly, said Eric Ng Yoke Foo, 64, who has been hiking in Tabur regularly for the past nine years.

“The two rope sections on Tabur West are where most accidents happen,” said Ng, who has been involved in many search-and-rescue operations.

PETALING JAYA: A big operation is underway to bring down a 28-year-old female hiker who fell down a ravine at Bukit Tabur in Taman Melawati on Sunday.

It is learnt that Noor Hasmahani Hashim injured her back when she fell down a 10m slope near checkpoint 11 and landed on some tree branches.

Noor Asmahani started the hike up the hill alone in the morning. Another female hiker who saw Noor Asmahani fall alerted the Fire and Rescue Department at about 10.30am.

Ampang Fire and Rescue Station operations officer Kaha Abdul Halim said it took his men almost two hours to hike into the area where the incident took place.

“When we found her at about 1.10pm, she was stuck on a tree some 10 metres down the ravine,” he told reporters at the entrance of the Bukit Tabur hiking trail.

Last month, private school science teacher Ng Pee Tat, 32, died from injuries after he fell several metres down a steep slope at the hill on Dec 3 2013.

Previous fatalities at Bukit Tabur involved two medical specialists who were both experienced trekkers.

Treacherous Bukit Tabur trail claims another victim as teacher plunges to his death

KUALA LUMPUR: The infamous Bukit Tabur in Ulu Kelang here claimed its latest victim when a science teacher from a private school fell several metres to his death.

Ng Pee Tat, in his 30s, died from severe injuries after he fell several meters down a steep slope at 8pm Tuesday.

This was the first time Ng and his colleague, 29-year-old David Spencer, had hiked up Bukit Tabur.

Spencer, a music teacher at the school in Setia Alam, said they started their hike at about 6pm and made it past Station 9 of the route when they realised that they had wandered off the trail in the darkness.

According to him, Ng grabbed a thin tree to hold himself up but it broke just as Spencer reached out to him, sending Ng plunging to his death.

“One of the rescuers told me that he fell 60 feet (18 meters),” Spencer told reporters when met at the scene.

Ill-fated hill

Popular for its breathtaking views and easy access, Selangor’s Bukit Tabur has, however, been in the news for the wrong reasons.

Where in the Klang Valley can you clamber up a peak at sunrise, enjoy jaw-dropping views of forest-cloaked reservoirs and still make it home in time for brunch?

Little wonder, then, that Bukit Tabur, the spiny quartz ridge hill in northwest Kuala Lumpur — is usually thronged by hikers during the weekend. Forming the backdrop for Taman Melawati, Tabur is part of the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge, the longest and oldest quartz ridge in the world, say geologists. It’s also home to the serow (mountain goat), more than 30 frog species and five endemic plant species.

But Tabur has been racking up some bad press lately.

Two weeks ago, a 51-year-old man slipped and tumbled down some 30m. Thanks to bushes that cushioned his fall, he got away with just light injuries. In March, two medical specialists, both experienced trekkers, plunged to their death from about 200m high.

In October 2008, a college student plummeted from about 100m but cheated death because the trees broke her fall. She suffered a deep gash on her forehead, cracked ribs and a punctured lung.

There were two fatalities in 2000 and 2004 and there have been countless accidents, mostly unreported, in the past nine years.

“It’s the refreshing air and beautiful views from above,” explains Ng, 60, about the draw of Tabur. He first trained here for his Mt Kinabalu climb in 2005. Since he lives in nearby Taman Permata, he’s up on the hill three times a week.

“The two rope sections on Tabur are where most accidents happen,” says Ng.

Due to his grasp of the area, the police and the rescue squad sometimes rope him in for search-and-rescue operations.
