Riots by Foreign Workers in Malaysia!

________________________________________________

RIOT IN LITTLE INDIA, SINGAPORE: AFTERMATH

In January 2014, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot had said that foreign workers in Malaysia are so happy.

HE IS WRONG!

49 ARRESTED. DEPORTED SOON?

KULAIJAYA: The police have arrested a total of 49 foreign workers in connection with a riot at an electronics factory at the Desa Perindustrian Kulai 2 in Kelapa Sawit on Tuesday.

Johor police chief Datuk Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the workers, comprising two Bangladeshis while the rest are Nepalese, have been remanded to help in the investigation of the case, which have been classified under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

TENAGANITA

Tenaganita programme director Glorene Fernandez revealed that this is not JCY’s first tussle with foreign workers.

“We have handled cases from JCY International before regarding their mistreatment of foreign workers.

“Previously, there was another case involving a Nepali foreign worker as well, which was brought to the industrial court but was settled outside court by JCY,” Fernandez told Malaysiakini.

She added that Tenaganita has previously conducted talks with JCY workers to educate them regarding their labour laws and rights.

Separately, PSM condemned the treatment of foreign workers by JCY International.

“The management’s idea of punishing 20 workers – forcing them to play volleyball with a rock, and throwing a stone at their private parts – that sparked off angry protests by the workers is outrageous and reflects the impunity enjoyed by employers,” said PSM central committee member Rani Rasiah.

“The workers had remained compliant despite enduring all kinds of abuses and depravation – low income, cramped living quarters with up to 45 workers sharing a shop house, beatings if they made mistakes, and being forced to walk an hour to work,” Rani added.

‘Fiery riot’ firm unaware workers being abused

The management of JCY International Bhd has claimed that it is not aware of foreign workers being allegedly abused at its factory in Johor.

In a media statement, the firm said an investigation has been launched into the allegations, which have been widely reported in the media.

z1

“The management is of the view that the incident (riot) was a result of miscommunication between all parties concerned and will take steps to further improve communication,” it added.

Among others, it was claimed that a senior staff at the Kulai factory had pelted the private part of a foreign worker with stones.

On Tuesday, enraged workers torched the factory building and a car belonging to a management staff.

Meanwhile, the company also clarified that they moved 23 workers from Tebrau to Kulai after the earlier riots to “calm” the situation in Tebrau.

“Twenty three workers were temporarily separated from the Tebrau factory and moved to the Kulaijaya factory for the purpose of calming the situation of the unrest incident that took place at a worker hostel located in Tebrau IV, Johor Bahru on Aug 22 and 23.”

It is believed that the riot in Tebrau last week ensued after a worker, Karka Bahadur Nirbula, died of sickness after not being given medical treatment by the company.

Factory torched as Kulai riot escalates

According to Kulaijaya Deputy District Police Chief DSP Mohd Idris Samsuri, among the rioters, 13 were arrested last night while the rest were arrested after the earlier incident.

They were arrested under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which deals with possession of missiles at a riot.

“Currently the workers are being remanded and actions to be taken are being discussed with the (Nepalese) embassy.”

Mohd Idris said the police have also arranged a meeting between representative of the detained workers and the company management, with embassy personnel present to act as mediator and translator.

Kulaijaya: About 800 workers, mostly from Nepal, staged a strike outside the building of an electronics company in the Kelapa Sawit Industrial Area here following alleged mistreatment by their employers.

They started gathering outside the JCY HDD Technology Sdn Bhd building from 8am and things got out of hand when some of them began to hurl stones and other objects at the management office and set fire to one of the employers’ cars.

The angry crowd also damaged three other blocks owned by the company.

Last Thursday, 21 August, 2014, there was a riot at the company’s branch at the Tebrau IV Industrial Area, near Johor Baru. About 1,500 workers showed their dissatisfaction over the company’s alleged negligence in handling the health issue of a worker, leading to his death.

They threw pieces of metal and glass, electronic items, chairs and boots from their four-storey hostel, smashing the glass windows of a guard post. A parked van was turned on its side.

WE HAVE HAD TWO NEAR RIOTS SINCE THE RIOT IN LITTLE INDIA, SINGAPORE. We had been warned that it could happen to us in Malaysia.

Superstition led to protest by 200 Nepalese factory workers

ALOR STAR: Superstition led 200 Nepalese workers to stage a protest in front of a plywood factory in Jabi, Pokok Sena here last night which resulted in three of them being detained by police.

The workers were fearful following the deaths of three workers last month and became more agigated when another worker fell ill and suffered breathing difficulties  on Saturday.
They gathered outside the factory at 9pm to pressure their employer to send the sick worker to hospital and engage a shaman to drive away the evil spirits which they believed were responsible for the deaths.
Mat Akhir said initial investigation showed that the sudden death cases were caused by poor health condition due improper food intake, unhygenic lodging and the immigrants’ habit of consuming illegal, cheap liquor.

Nepalese workers try to stage riots in Pokok Sena following colleague’s death – Bernama

January 12, 2014

A group of Nepalese factory workers in Pokok Sena near Alor Star, Kedah, tried to stage riots last night after getting furious with their employer who allegedly ignored one of their colleagues who was having difficulty breathing.

In the 9pm incident, between 100 and 200 workers gathered in front of the employer’s house, demanding him to take immediate action to help the worker whose condition was worsening at the workers’ hostel.

Fearing something bad would happen, the employer refused to come out to meet the workers, but instead alerted the police.

The Nepalese workers became more furious after realising that their friend had died of shortness of breath and blamed it on the employer.

However, a team of policemen, who arrived at the scene about 20 minutes later, managed to disperse the workers.

KATHMANDU — With tense hands, they clutch their boarding passes. Promises of a better life start here, at the international airport of Nepal’s bustling capital.

This morning, more than 30 soon-to-be emigrants are waiting in line in front of the check-in counter, set to take off for work opportunities in Malaysia or the Gulf States. Having never been on a plane before, one can see fear in the eyes of many these young mountain people. They all wear the same baseball cap — with the logo of the agency that recruited them on it – as if they were schoolchildren who might get lost.

MTUC: S’pore riot a wake up call to M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 12, 2013): The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has called on the Human Resource Ministry to hold a tripartite meeting between the government, employers and employees to work out a strategy to prevent rioting by foreign workers.

Its president, Khalid Atan said a recent foreign workers riot in Singapore should serve as a wake-up call to Malaysia in preparing a strategy to anticipate and contain such occurrences.

Growing discontent among foreign workers in Malaysia due to poor working conditions, discrimination and low wages are like a “time bomb”, he said, adding so far dissatisfaction among foreign workers in the country were confined to factories and work places.

Khalid felt that if a widespread discontent among foreign workers was not addressed, it could spell trouble for the country in years to come.

He said the MTUC felt that the government should take steps to reduce and even curtail recruitment of foreign workers until it could come out with a plan to cater to their basic needs and rights.

The government should also stop out sourcing companies from importing workers who could not find jobs here, he added.
