TENAGANITA
Tenaganita programme director Glorene Fernandez revealed that this is not JCY’s first tussle with foreign workers.
“We have handled cases from JCY International before regarding their mistreatment of foreign workers.
“Previously, there was another case involving a Nepali foreign worker as well, which was brought to the industrial court but was settled outside court by JCY,” Fernandez told Malaysiakini.
She added that Tenaganita has previously conducted talks with JCY workers to educate them regarding their labour laws and rights.

Separately, PSM condemned the treatment of foreign workers by JCY International.
“The management’s idea of punishing 20 workers – forcing them to play volleyball with a rock, and throwing a stone at their private parts – that sparked off angry protests by the workers is outrageous and reflects the impunity enjoyed by employers,” said PSM central committee member Rani Rasiah.
“The workers had remained compliant despite enduring all kinds of abuses and depravation – low income, cramped living quarters with up to 45 workers sharing a shop house, beatings if they made mistakes, and being forced to walk an hour to work,” Rani added.

‘Fiery riot’ firm unaware workers being abused
The management of JCY International Bhd has claimed that it is not aware of foreign workers being allegedly abused at its factory in Johor.
In a media statement, the firm said an investigation has been launched into the allegations, which have been widely reported in the media.
“The management is of the view that the incident (riot) was a result of miscommunication between all parties concerned and will take steps to further improve communication,” it added.
Among others, it was claimed that a senior staff at the Kulai factory had pelted the private part of a foreign worker with stones.
On Tuesday, enraged workers torched the factory building and a car belonging to a management staff.
Meanwhile, the company also clarified that they moved 23 workers from Tebrau to Kulai after the earlier riots to “calm” the situation in Tebrau.
“Twenty three workers were temporarily separated from the Tebrau factory and moved to the Kulaijaya factory for the purpose of calming the situation of the unrest incident that took place at a worker hostel located in Tebrau IV, Johor Bahru on Aug 22 and 23.”
It is believed that the riot in Tebrau last week ensued after a worker, Karka Bahadur Nirbula, died of sickness after not being given medical treatment by the company.

They were arrested under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which deals with possession of missiles at a riot.
“Currently the workers are being remanded and actions to be taken are being discussed with the (Nepalese) embassy.”
Mohd Idris said the police have also arranged a meeting between representative of the detained workers and the company management, with embassy personnel present to act as mediator and translator.

WE HAVE HAD TWO NEAR RIOTS SINCE THE RIOT IN LITTLE INDIA, SINGAPORE. We had been warned that it could happen to us in Malaysia.
1 On 11 January, 2014, about 300 Nepalis almost rioted at Kulim, Kedah.
2 On 13 December, 2013, a big crowd of Indonesian workers converged at the Pusa police station near Betong, Sarawak, following the death of their colleague.
Our Human Resources Minister, Richard Riot, has chosen to ignore the warning. He is like an ostrich, head stuck in the ground.
He says, “NO RIOT IN MALAYSIA!”
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot said that foreign workers in Malaysia are happy.
Well, he may have to eat his words.

WE GOT AWAY WITH IT BY THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH!
If newspaper reports are to be believed in, it was a near thing, almost a riot!

Nepalese workers try to stage riots in Pokok Sena following colleague’s death – Bernama
A group of Nepalese factory workers in Pokok Sena near Alor Star, Kedah, tried to stage riots last night after getting furious with their employer who allegedly ignored one of their colleagues who was having difficulty breathing.
In the 9pm incident, between 100 and 200 workers gathered in front of the employer’s house, demanding him to take immediate action to help the worker whose condition was worsening at the workers’ hostel.
Fearing something bad would happen, the employer refused to come out to meet the workers, but instead alerted the police.
The Nepalese workers became more furious after realising that their friend had died of shortness of breath and blamed it on the employer.
However, a team of policemen, who arrived at the scene about 20 minutes later, managed to disperse the workers.

In Nepal, Where Slavery’s New Road Begins And Ends
Some 400,000 people leave the country every year to work abroad, often recruited by agencies that are really human traffickers. A close-up view of the human toll in Katmandu.
KATHMANDU — With tense hands, they clutch their boarding passes. Promises of a better life start here, at the international airport of Nepal’s bustling capital.
This morning, more than 30 soon-to-be emigrants are waiting in line in front of the check-in counter, set to take off for work opportunities in Malaysia or the Gulf States. Having never been on a plane before, one can see fear in the eyes of many these young mountain people. They all wear the same baseball cap — with the logo of the agency that recruited them on it – as if they were schoolchildren who might get lost.
This scene is part of the ongoing exodus of 400,000 Nepalese who fly out every year, as the estimated total now is some 2.5 million under temporary contract abroad (Nepal’s total population is 27 million) that doesn’t even account for the Nepalese working in neighboring India.
