THOUSANDS of consumers and business operators in at least 36 areas in Selangor are bracing for a long weekend without water.

This follows the discovery of a large amount of ammonia in Sungai Langat, which forced the temporary closure of the Cheras Batu 11 and Bukit Tampoi treatment plants yesterday. Both plants supply clean water to 36 areas in the state.

A Balakong Chinese New Village resident, who wanted to be known only as Chin, said she had wanted to start cleaning her house on Wednesday, but there was no water supply. “This (Yesterday) morning, I was happy that the supply had returned, but it did not last for long.

“If the disruption drags on throughout Chinese New Year, it will be disastrous.”

Chinese New Year market hit hard by price hikes

Prudent spending is unavoidable when a series of price hikes strike the consumers badly, and what’s worse is its direct impact on the Chinese New Year merchandise market which is in shrinking pattern this year.

With less than two weeks to go before the Lunar New Year, the recent devaluation of the Ringgit also meant costlier China-imported new year items, forcing some retailers to curtail their purchasing volume.

A check by Malaysiakini of the Chinese-dominated SS2 market in Petaling Jaya recently showed that imports have plunged by as much as 60 percent.

A Mandarin orange seller who only wanted to be known as Ah Keong, pointed out that most consumers turned prudent once the price of many goods and services skyrocketed.

“Some customers choose to buy fewer mandarin oranges in order to save money… I’m now worried that the remaining oranges cannot be sold,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 9, 2014): Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad predicts that the year ahead will be gloomy due to recent issues surrounding race relations in the country.

Mahathir said 2014 is going to be a “difficult” year because Malaysia has never before been faced with some of the current controversies surrounding race relations.

He added that people are becoming more liberal and they are demanding for more freedom.

The 88-year old former premier however warned that such freedom and liberty comes with a cost if people are unable to handle it.

It’s not quite the Year of the Horse yet, but you can tell that it will be a WILD horse in terms of price hikes!

And what can SPAD do about price hikes in school bus fares? Suggest that PTAs run their own buses! How PATHETIC!

The SPAD man has SPUDS for brains! (Spuds: potatoes)

He says that SPAD has not approved fare increases for school bus operators but since they have insisted on raising their fares, don’t take the school bus.

Instead, the  Parents-Teachers Associations (PTAs) should operate their own school buses!

SPAD sidesteps bus companies, approves schoolbuses by PTA

Syed Hamid said that the PTA of schools could now operate their own buses to ferry students.

Parents can also hire independent van owners within their neighbourhood to send their children to school, with SPAD regulating them to ensure safety standards are complied with, the paper reported.

While opening up the industry to new players, Syed Hamid said these new operators have to obtain licences and obey guidelines that will be issued by SPAD soon.

“We have no problems with neighbourhood vans (for example) operating legally to ferry children to and from school.

“We will approve the application (by independent owners) quickly, as long as the vans are within the stipulated age limit.

“Under this arrangement, we can fix the minimum fare. The rest is up to parents and the independent owners,” Syed Hamid said.

Since taking over the leadership reins, Najib has tried every trick in the political handbook to win over Chinese voters and is now probably the first head of state to have a caricature of himself on the ang pow.

Fancy an Ah Jib Gor ang pow for CNY?

  • 4:19PM Jan 8, 2014

In the 13th general election last May, the Chinese Malaysian community had dealt a stinging blow to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and the BN.

Since then rumours have been rife that he has decided to ditch attempts to woo the lovelorn voters, preferring to focus on the Malay vote bank instead.

But for the upcoming Chinese New Year, Najib has made an appearance on limited edition ang pow (red packets).

The packets are being distributed by the administrators of the prime minister’s Chinese Facebook page.

The message on the ang pow is a phonetic play on Najib’s name, which has been made to sound like ‘Najib’ but means ‘drawing good luck’ and a wish that the lunar new year will bring prosperity.

However, the question now is whether one is willing to put money in an ang pow from a prime minister whose policies are forcing the people dig deeper into their pockets this year.

The cost of living has increased since the general election due to subsidy cuts and more bad news is expected this year.
