GEORGETOWN: Penang police detained a “Datuk Seri” believed to be the mastermind of a syndicate which has conned the public of about RM7.3 million in fake investments abroad.

The suspect, 49, and his 42-year-old wife were among five people and a two-month-old baby detained in Kampung Gajah, Butterworth on Wednesday.
State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said acting on a tip-off, police raided an apartment, rented by the couple at about 10.30am.
He said of the remaining suspects were  a local man aged 34 and two Indonesian women who did not have any valid travel documents.
He said checks showed the “Datuk Seri”, who claimed he was conferred with the title by the Sultan of Johor, duped his “investors” into believing that he owned many properties overseas especially in Australia.
“We seize  RM360,000, cheques of several banks and jewellery worth about RM200,000 from the couple.
“We believe at least 13 people had fallen victims to the couple’s scam,” he said.
