Thor: The Dark World soars to top of US box office
Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as the superhero in the film Marvel superhero blockbuster Thor: The Dark World pounded its rivals at the North American box office, taking $86.1m (£53.8m) in its opening weekend.
The sequel to the 2011 movie sees Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as the god of thunder who battles to save Earth from evil forces.
Bad Grandpa, from the makers of Jackass, held the number two spot for a second week, taking $11.3m (£7.1m).
Animated film Free Birds was just behind at three with $11.2m (£7m).
…
Industry forecasts had predicted the second Thor instalment would debut with at least $90m (£56m). It missed that target but did surpass the original film, which opened with $65.7m (£41m).
“It’s a great start,” Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios said, adding Disney would have considered “anything north of $80m (£50m) to be a good result.”
Including international markets – where the movie has been playing since 30 October – the film has now taken some $327m (£204m) globally.

A scene from the film “Vikingdom.” (Epic Pictures / October 3, 2013)
Dominic Purcell of “Prison Break” stars in “Vikingdom” as Eirick, king of Jomsborg. Exiled since his death and miraculous resurrection, Eirick is on a quest to prevent Thor (Conan Stevens) from opening the gates of Valhalla and connecting the earth with heaven and hell. Yes, that would be the same Thor character assumed by Chris Hemsworth in various Hollywood Marvel tent poles. The god of thunder turns villainous here, but that doesn’t mean “Vikingdom” is any less removed from Norse mythology than is Stan Lee‘s take.
The Western cast lends credence to this Malaysian production only on paper and does little to distract from the film’s limitations. Granted, there’s very little for the actors to work with, as the Viking stuff is merely a vessel for gory fight scenes. Why else would Eirick rescue and recruit some random Chinese guy (played by Jon Foo, a Brit whose Mandarin is as heavily accented as his character’s English) with kung-fu chops?

Produced for a fraction of the budget of Marvel’s ‘Thor’ pics, this cheerfully silly action fantasy is unpretentious fun best suited to younger viewers.
Dennis Harvey
…This first serious stab at Western markets by Malaysia’s Kru Studios is a cheerfully silly action fantasy more comparable to the vintage juvenile likes of Italian sword ‘n’ sandal epics, Ray Harryhausen pics, kiddie-matinee serials and goofy kung fu fantasies than to today’s superhero tentpole extravaganzas; fanboys, of course, will howl in pain nonetheless.

Vikingdom Trembles With Great Dumb Joy

Say it out loud, and the title Vikingdom, that slapdash portmanteau, reveals its hidden promise: Viking Dumb. That’s a fair summation of the glory and ridiculousness of what director Yusry Abd Halim and his cohorts at KRU Productions have pulled off in this B-movie gone amok. They only could have improved on its accuracy if they’d just gone ahead and called it exactly what it is: The First and Best-Ever Malaysian Viking Flick with All-English Dialogue.

___________________________________________________________Dear Dr. Seigfreid,I am the writer of KRU’s film, Vikingdom. So to that end, I have to take certain responsibility for the content of the film.
..I would like to address your letter, and to perhaps assuage some of your concerns.
..Principally, the concept of Thor as a villain isn’t simply an affront to Thor himself, but was born out of his heroic past. The idea is that after centuries of defending mankind, he’s angry at the spread of Christianity and the subversion of ancient Norse relics by Christians.
..His purpose (in the film) is to gather to him the faithful, reclaim those relics and to push back against the incursion of the One God. It’s as simple as that. The quest, to recover the horn, and to bring it back from Helheim is part of a wider plan by the Norse Gods to push back against the turning of the spiritual tide.
…That these Gods fail, and fail at the hands of a mortal, who, by the way, is not a Christian, but a pagan, who knows these Gods, and believes in them, is part of the irony of Eiricks imaginary saga.
…The blurbs on imdb do not accurately reflect this, and frankly, having not see the finished product, I can only speak to my intent. The idea that this is based on myth is that the myths and characters of the story were starting points for what I created.
..Much is the same for “Thor” as produced by Marvel. Did you write them a letter complaining that the Norse Gods are depicted as inter dimensional aliens, who were mistaken for Gods by the ‘primitive’ Norse peoples?
..In researching the film, I relied on “The Viking Saga” by Peter Brent, and “A History of The Vikings” by Gwyn Jones. I would like to point out something else to you, Dr. Seigfried. The Vikings take their name from the actions that gave them their reputation. They conquered, and pillaged their way across Europe, bringing with them fire, death and destruction.
..We can discuss their role in making the world smaller, their remarkable trade routes, their skills in navigation; all admirable qualities, but what history will always remember them for is the utter violence they perpetrated on the population of Northern Europe.
..I don’t judge them for this, it was part and parcel with the times they lived in, and a way to provide for their people. In fact, I admire and respect their uncompromising warrior culture. This too has to be part of what we work with when one seeks to tangle myth and fiction.
..I am deeply sorry that you are in anyway offended by what was meant to be a fun, exciting saga, in which one man realizes his potential, and grasps his destiny. I tried to make Thor a well rounded character, who had realistic and understandable motivations for what he was doing. I tried to highlight the Catholic church’s role in cultural appropriation.
..I admit my own culpability in the same regard. I took what I wanted from the myth, and then created my own from that same fabric. I am proud to have created the story, and proud that it has been brought to the screen.
..That said, in my task as a writer for the screen I am constrained in many ways. Films must have heroes and villains, there must be a revelation, a climax and a catharsis, and they must be over in under two hours. That doesn’t often leave room for the kind of intellectual and historical accuracy that scholars prefer. You have only to look at the gross historical inaccuracies of most films to understand how difficult it is to address reality in the confines of cinema. Even with epic budgets, Saving Private Ryan made WW2 look like an all American adventure, The Patriot cast the redcoats as murderers, I could go on for days with this list.
..What matters is that the film praises the qualities of the Norsemen. Their bravery, their willingness to face death, and worse, for the saga, the dream to leave a name throughout history, to have songs sung in your honor, and to achieve the prize, a seat at Woden’s table in Valhalla.
..Perhaps, sir, in the midst of what are obviously many errors on my part in the transmission of myth, there is a chance to openly debate the role of the church, the Norse Pantheon, and history to a wider audience now.
..For those who love, and worship those Gods still, I offer my apologies. To Thor himself, in whatever lands he now roams, I also apologize. But, in the true tradition of Thor, my apology comes in the full faith that I never intended to do him or his followers any harm, and I’m willing to defend myself and my position. If he wants to wrestle, he’ll find me a game opponent, but I shudder at the thought of a drinking contest.
..Respectfully yours,James Coyne

The Malaysian-made Hollywood movie “Vikingdom” was never meant to cause any harm to the pre-Christian religion called Asatru, the film’s director Yusry Abdul Halim says.
In a 20-minute long YouTube video which was posted by KRU Studios yesterday, Yusri admitted that the existence of the religion was not known to the makers when they made the movie.
He also denied comparisons between Vikingdom and the controversial anti-Muslim film “Innocence of Muslims”.
“The film ‘Innocence of Muslims’ was done with the intent to insult. I don’t hate the Asatru religion and did not intend to insult them,” Yusry explained.

Free Malaysia Today reporter gets a bombardment from celebrity actress-wife of Vikingdom director!
Actress Lisa Surihani Mohamed has taken exception to an article by Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reporter Lisa J Ariffin.
THE BATTLE WIDENS!
As a mighty battle plays out on the silver screen between forgotten king Eirick and the god of thunder Thor in the movie ‘Vikingdom’, another battle was played out on Twittersphere between a journalist and the celebrity wife of the movie’s director.
It would seem that actress Lisa Surihani Mohamed has taken exception to an article by Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reporter Lisa J Ariffin in which the latter processed a statement by Norse mythologist Karl EH Seigfried disputing claims on the film’s promotional material that it is based on “myth and history”.
Released in Malaysia on Sept 12 and slated for an Oct 4 release in the United States, the movie was produced by Malaysia’s own KRU Studios’ and directed by Lisa Surihani’s husband Yusry Abdul Halim.
Yusry has since issued a video statement yesterday on YouTube to explain the controversy over his film.
…
Describing the FMT article as “journalism at its worst” and “amateurish”, Yusry alleged the news portal had merely translated a Malay “misquoted” report on the movie for Seigfried to respond to.
“Don’t blame the messenger”
Meanwhile, the online exchange between the two Lisas began when Lisa Surihani took to Twitter yesterday to vent her frustration and “protect her loved one”, tweeting: “I honestly don’t know whether you have the moral conscience and how you can sleep soundly without it.”
It’s Lisa vs Lisa over ‘Vikingdom’

KRU Studios never responded when FMT reporter tried getting their feedback on the criticism hurled by Norse expert.
PETALING JAYA: A Twitter war broke out between Lisa Surihani Mohamed, the wife of KRU Studios owner Yusry Abdul Halim and FMT’s reporter Lisa J Ariffin, in regards to the criticism leveled against the production studio’s recent feature film, Vikingdom.
Lisa S was upset over Lisa J’s article yesterday, which carried criticism from a Nordic expert against the movie.

Call in the critics
We need to stop glorifying big budget movies with international joint ventures as an automatically ‘great’ movie.
A healthy reviewing culture is necessary for check and balance. And in response to constructive reviews, good public relations skill should be conducted by the movie studios.
Not quite like the responses from KRU Studios recently to Dr. Karl EH Seigfried, who wrote an open letter to them about their new film, Vikingdom.
Harsh truths to our filmmakers
Dr Seigfried, a scholar in Norse Mythology, challenged the claims of the movies and argued that most of the claimed historical facts were not only fictitious; it also derailed far from the mythologies KRU had claimed they researched.
Director Yusry Halim’s response was to simply dismiss the authenticity of Seigfried, despite numerous proofs provided.
What was more disrespectful was when he commented that ‘the Westerners’ too do not know if the Vikings and Thor existed, and imagined Seigfried’s critique to be a religious attack on the director.
If only experts on our own soil were bold enough to give harsh truths to our filmmakers. To not sugarcoat things and give the industry the tough love it needs. Maybe then we would realize that we’re not as good as our friends think we are.
We need to stop glorifying big budget movies with international joint ventures as an automatically ‘great’ movie.
…
Perhaps they should practice a little PR when making statements to the international press, and save themselves from appearing like bitter, spoilt children.
There is plenty of room for improvement, as long as the film industry takes the opportunity and uses these criticisms as an inspiration to improve.
Elza Irdalynna writes about art, love, and other things she pretends to understand. She is also an FMT columnist.

Read for yourself the Post of Dr Siegfried in The Asatru Community
“Vikingdom” Update 2 “VIKINGDOM” TRAIN WRECK CONTINUES: DIRECTOR MIXES UP GREEK GODS, CEO INSISTS FILM IS BASED ON “NORDIC HISTORY”
Dr. Siegfried’s adventures continue with the director of the shameful movie “Vikingdom” Read below to see how the story continues! I would like to remind everyone, that the words below come from the Dr’s. facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/norsemythology
First post on Vikingdom:http://theasatrucommunity.org/2013/09/19/new-movie-vikingdom/
First Update: http://theasatrucommunity.org/2013/09/20/new-movie-vikingdom-update/
“The director of Vikingdom keeps making it worse. Here’s the latest from The Star Online:
_________
“The movie is a fantasy based on mythology. We have taken creative license with some mythological characters, as the West have done in the past,” said Yusry.
“For instance, Zeus is actually the god of thunder but in the videogame, he is the god of war.”
_________
Again, his research team has let him down. Again, he’s totally mixed up what god does what in which mythology.
Simply visiting the IMDb page for the God of War game would have given him this sentence: “Driven by revenge, Kratos embarks on an epic journey to bring down Ares, the God of War.” Simply googling “Ares” would shown him that Ares is the god of war in the mythology, as in the game.
Or maybe he meant Zeus is actually Thor? Or maybe he meant “Space Invaders” is based on Greek myth? It’s all so confusing.
Again, from the new interview:
_________
“When Westerners do it, it’s considered freedom of speech and creative license. When an Asian does it, it’s wrong,” an agitated Yusry said.
_________
Does he mean when Westerners can’t tell Zeus from Ares? Or does he mean when Westerners can’t tell Thor from Satan?
I’m pretty sure it’s wrong, no matter what part of the planet the person is from. Let’s be fair.
In the same article, the CEO of KRU Studios throws the director under the bus. While the director is now denying all the company’s previous claims that the movie is based on research of myth, history, legend & poetry, the CEO is doubling down on the film’s “historical” basis.
From the new article:
_________
Norman Halim, who handles the marketing matters, said the film has a historical aspect as it references the Viking raid on a church in 793 AD.
“We went to Sweden three times, visited the museums and historical sites. I personally read 10 books on Nordic history,” he said.
_________
So the CEO (who is the director’s brother) insists on exactly what I questioned in my original “Open Letter”: the claim that this film is based on a serious study of cultural history. He’s credited as Executive Producer of the film. Is he now claiming he wrote the screenplay or that the screenplay was based on his research?
Meanwhile, the director still refuses to seriously address the issues in my letter, but repeatedly states that he hopes to profit financially from the “controversy.” I personally don’t consider insulting a religious tradition for profit to be a noble act. We must simply disagree on this.
In the poem “Hávamál” (Sayings of the High One), Odin teaches us:
_________
Wise that man seems who knows how to question
And how to answer as well;
The sons of men cannot keep secret
What is already going around.
Quite enough senseless words are spoken
By the man never silent;
A quick tongue, unless its owner keeps watch on it,
Often talks itself into trouble.
_________
Maybe the director should listen to the words of Odin & stop making all these wild statements. Maybe it’s time for him to simply say:
“I am sorry. I have learned from this experience. I will honor the faith of others as I hope they will honor mine.
“I will not profit from attacking the beliefs of others. I will donate all proceeds from this film to interfaith charities that build bridges between religions, for that is the truly righteous path.”
That would be a real miracle. ”
The Asatru Community @AsatruCommunity
And the sad saga continues! The Director of “Vikingdom” strikes again!… http://fb.me/1hbPRrhnQ

KRU Studios shoots itself in the foot
Following worldwide criticisms, KRU admits new film is ‘just a fantasy, not history’, only to be further slated by Norse expert.
PETALING JAYA: Local film makers, KRU Studios have again been slated by a Chicago-based Norse mythology expert, this time for admitting their big budget film ‘Vikingdom’ is a work of fiction.
Mythologist Karl EH Seigfried pointed out that KRU had promoted the film as ‘a collision of myth and history’, and that they (KRU) claimed to have flown “to the Scandinavian countries to recce, visit libraries to read up on Viking lore and speak to the locals”.
“You have now sold out your own film company, I think,” Seigfried said in an open letter, referring to director Yusry Abdul Halim’s statement that the film “is just fantasy and not produced from actual history.”
“On the movie’s official website, KRU Studios calls the film ‘a collision of myth and history’. It also says the movie is ‘based on viking legends and the epic poems they left as record’.
“Are you saying that KRU Studios are not telling the truth?

‘Vikingdom’, which features Hollywood actor Dominic Purcell, is directed by Yusry Abdul Halim, a member of the one-time teenage heart-throb boyband KRU.
Written by James Coyne, it hit Malaysian silver screens on Sept 12 and is due to open in the US on Oct 4.
According to 1MDb, it cost approximately US$15.6 million (RM50.47 million) and is likely the most expensive film by a Malaysian production house.

A Thor-ny Vikingdom
New movie by KRU Studios slated by Norse mythology expert for skewing facts into fiction make belief.
…
Mythologist Karl E. H. Seigfried told FMT that he had repeatedly written private emails to “several people at KRU”, including company director Shireen M Hashim, on the errors depicted in the film, but “they (KRU) have made no response”.
He also claimed that several people from the Malaysian film industry had written to him privately saying that they were afraid to speak out publicly against KRU as it would hurt their careers.
“I have received many comments and messages from Malaysians who are embarrassed by the actions of KRU – and by their silence on this matter,” Seigfried said in an e-mail to FMT.
“Many Malaysian Muslims have apologised publicly and privately for what KRU has done – but KRU is still silent,” he added.
Seigfried expressed concern over Shireen’s promotional material for the film, in which she claimed the film was based on “myth and history”.
“They (KRU) repeatedly claim that their film is based on research in Scandinavian libraries and on mythology, history, legend and poetry,” he said.
“However, their film turns all of this upside down and makes Thor, the protector of mankind in this religion, into an evil tyrant,” he lamented.

Local film makers KRU Studios’ big budget foray into Hollywood has earned it international attention, but not the kind it had hoped to get.
Instead, a Norse mythology expert has accused the content of ‘Vikingdom’ of insulting Norse myth and not siding the followers of the Old Way belief system.
Worse still, Karl EH Seigfried, who teaches the subject at Loyola University in Chicago, likened ‘Vikingdom’ to the controversial anti-Muslim film ‘Innocence of Muslims’.
“That awful video turned the message of (the Prophet) Muhammad upside down and gravely insulted Muslims the world over.
“Likewise, your film turns the ancient role of Thor exactly upside down,” he said in an open letter to the studio, posted on Facebook.

Vikingdom: The Blood Eclipse
Review
Vikingdom: The Blood Eclipse
KRU Studios’ RM20mil epic Vikingdom: The Blood Eclipse chronicles the journey of Viking warrior Elrick Bloodletter (Dominic Purcell) who has to retrieve a mystical artifact in order to save the human race from being destroyed by the God of Thunder, a red-headed Thor (Conan Stevens). Elrick and his old friend Sven (Craig Fairbrass) then round up a few good Viking men for the journey.
He also reluctantly lets the gorgeous Brynna (played by stunning Norwegian-Malaysian actress Natassia Malthe) to join them because … she has a boat. And they need it to go to the depths of the ocean to find an entrance to the underworld.

Tanda putera is much better for me. The storyline is good and the actor managed to potrayed the character well. Do not ignore a fact just because you dont like it. Saying tanda putera is umno’s propaganda is very immature.
What fact are you talking about? The main storyline is not what is disputed. What is disputed is the attempt to blame certain people for May 13.
