Malaysian girl makes Top 10 in 2013 World Muslimah contest in Indonesia
PETALING JAYA: At 21 years old, Nurul Husna Zainal Abidin from Kuala Kangsar became Malaysia’s first representative to the World Muslimah Competition 2013 in Jakarta.
Previously, the World Muslimah was only open to Indonesians but this year it included contestants from across the world, drawing in hopefuls from Malaysia, Brunei, Bangladesh, Iran and Nigeria.
…
During the event, Husna emerged as one of the top 10 finalists and bagged the prize for World Muslim Woman Netizen 2013, one of the 6 awards given out during the grand final ceremony.
The World Muslim Woman Netizen award is evaluated based on the contestant’s popularity on internet sites such as Twitter, Facebook and through their following on hashtags.

JAKARTA: A Nigerian woman tearfully prayed and recited Koranic verses as she won a beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women in the Indonesian capital on Wednesday, a riposte to the Miss World contest that has sparked hardline anger.
The 20 finalists, who were all required to wear headscarves, put on a glittering show for the final of Muslimah World, strolling up and down a catwalk in elaborately embroidered dresses and stilettos.
But the contestants from six countries were covered from head to foot, and as well as beauty they were judged on how well they recited Koranic verses and their views on Islam in the modern world.

Jakarta: The Miss World beauty contest, which has attracted fierce opposition by hardline Islamic groups in host country Indonesia, is now facing another challenge – a rival pageant exclusively for Muslims.
The Muslimah World contest to be held on Wednesday in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, is “Islam’s answer to Miss World”, the pageant’s founder Eka Shanti said on Saturday.

Indonesians hold ‘Islam’s answer to Miss World’
Updated
Indonesia will hold a pageant exclusively for Muslims, The Muslimah World contest, in rivalry to the Miss World beauty contest.
The Muslimah World contest’s founder Eka Shanti says the Muslimah World contest to be held on Wednesday in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, is “Islam’s answer to Miss World”.
“Muslimah World is a beauty pageant but the requirements are very different from Miss World,” Ms Shanti said.
“You have to be pious, be a positive role model and show how you balance a life of spirituality in today’s modernised world.”
The 20 Muslimah World finalists were chosen from more than 500 who took part in online rounds, reciting Koranic verses and telling stories of how they came to wear the Islamic headscarf, a requirement for the pageant.
The finalists, from Iran, Malaysia, Brunei, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Indonesia, will parade Islamic fashions in what Ms Shanti says is an opportunity to show young Muslim women they do not need to show their “immodest” parts, including their hair and bare shoulders, to be beautiful.
…
“We’d rather show our children they have choices – Do you want to be like the women in Miss World or like those in Muslimah World?”
