Then what do you call Muhyiddin’s racist statements? Check out the controversy over his statement blaming non-Muslims for the dog video, and his subsequent denial of having said it.

He has earned a reputation of being a racist with his “Malay first, Malaysian second” proclamation and his feet-dragging over the Interlok saga.

How will putting a poet behind bars make a difference to the BN government?

COMMENT

Outsiders get murdered in Malaysia and the murderers are never convicted. The country’s Islamic Development Department (Jakim) blatantly misuses the Friday sermons to incite the Muslims against the non-Malays but that too is alright with the federal government.

What however Putrajaya under the Barisan Nasional government cannot digest is the fact that there are Malaysians who are willing to forsake glory to uphold their belief in the truth.

Be it then the Bersih chairperson S Ambiga or its co-chairperson A Samad Said, the national laureate-cum-activist, both have experienced the wrath of the BN government for standing up against injustices and wrongdoings.

Just for being honest and dedicated to a cause, both Ambiga and Samad were censured and calls made for their citizenships and honorific titles to be revoked.

Ambiga who was the force behind the Bersih rallies that demanded a clean-up to the electoral system, remains true to her cause, the ‘obstacles’ coming her way in spite.

Now, it is the 78-year-old poet and novelist Samad who is going through the same motion – the disrespect and uncouth treatment meted out by the authorities to him speaks volumes of their desperation in appeasing the ‘powers that be’.

So, please do not go out harassing a man of convictions for staying true to a cause. Samad Said, who was conferred the Sasterawan Nusantara title in 1999, is not the problem here – rather it is the nefarious BN government that is.

Muhyiddin rebukes “indecent and shameful” Pak Samad over flag incident

National laureate Datuk A. Samad Said’s participation in an event where the Sang Saka Malaya flag was flown has been described as indecent and shameful by Putrajaya.

“Samad’s involvement is incredibly embarrassing and it’s improper since he carries the title of a laureate,” said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) in his speech at Universiti Malaya today.

“Yesterday I read again that the IGP said he (Pak Samad) had sneaked back into his house. How can this be as he has to take an elevator to his house and open his house by using a key? It defies logic and not possible to say he sneaked.

“Hence, the IGP is joking again, but never mind,” he said.

IGP’s Pak Samad hiding claim a ‘crude joke’

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar was making a crude joke when he claimed that national laureate Abdul Samad Said was hiding from authorities.

Activist Hishamuddin Rais, who, together with A Samad, is also being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948, and for alleged mischief under the Penal Code, said it was impossible for the national laureate to hide.

“He does not possess ilmu ghaib (knowledge on making self disappear). Hence Pak Samad cannot hide. IGP Khalid (left) is making a crude joke in claiming Pak Samad is hiding,” he said, referring to how Samad is often affectionately called.

Perkasa urges Pak Samad to return national laureate title himself

Malay rights group Perkasa has called on national laureate A. Samad Said to return the honorific bestowed by the government to prove that he would not be bothered if it was stripped off him.

Perkasa President Datuk Ibrahim Ali said he was impressed by Samad’s stand but said if he was sincere, he should just return the title.

“I applaud Samad’s bravery, but he should return the national laureate title himself if he is sincere. Many people will criticise the government if it revokes the title,” he said in a press conference at the Kelab Sultan Sulaiman today.

National Laureate 2013 Datuk Baha Zain said it was wrong to strip Samad off the honorific for his actions now.

“The honour was bestowed for his literary work and has nothing to do with his politics. His contribution to the arts is immeasurable. The government would not do something stupid like that,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

However, the former Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka deputy director said Samad does not enjoy immunity from the law.

“National laureates are just that… national laureates. We do not enjoy immunity from the law. If we commit a crime, we have to face the consequences,” he said. – September 5, 2013.

A most cheeky and ridiculous statement
Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Chee, obviously referring to Pak said,  said that the public would perceive that some of the laureates were ‘sick’ to the extent of being attention seekers.

Asked whether the title conferred to A.Samad could be revoked, the minister said it was up to the authority that conferred him the title.

“In the eyes of the people, Samad was not only a laureate but a ‘hero who defended his principles, even if it went against the government’,”said PAS Party information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man

Pak Samad: Go ahead, revoke my title

A Samad Said is not perturbed by the calls from certain quarters to strip him of the national laureate title.

On the contrary, the 81-year-old poet welcomed the move.

Taking it a step further, Samad said that he would not even care should the government revoke his citizenship.

“As far as the call to revoke my laureate title, I welcome that with open arms.

“In fact, I even welcome the revocation of my citizenship should they decide to do so,” he told Malaysiakini.

PAS livid over proposal to revoke laureate title

The suggestion that A Samad Said’s national laureate title be revoked following his arrest over the flying of the Sang Saka Malaya flag is an “extreme” measure, said PAS.

Party information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (left) said even by saying the title can be reviewed, Culture and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek dealt the laureate a “great insult”.

“Can the government deny that Pak Samad (as he is fondly known) had enriched and raised the status of Malay literature simply because his struggle today is seen as not ‘government-friendly’?

Ahmad Shabery hints that Pak Samad’s National Laureate can be REVOKED

PETALING JAYA – The involvement of Datuk A. Samad Said in the incident of waving a flag other than the Jalur Gemilang on the eve of Merdeka Day last Friday can affect the public perception on individuals who were conferred with the title of National Laureate.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the public would perceive that some of the laureates were ‘sick’ to the extent of being attention seekers.

“Undeniably, it will affect the title and it is possible that people will no longer look highly upon a National Laureate,” he told reporters after launching the ‘Saya Sayang Malaysia’ or #MYSyg campaign here Tuesday night.

When asked whether the title conferred to A.Samad could be revoked, the minister said it was up to the authority that conferred him the title.

National laureate Datuk A. Samad Said today accused the Inspector-General of Police of fabricating a story to justify his arrest past midnight on Wednesday.

I was at home. I was not in hiding.

“I was at home all the time, though I did go for a walk at Bangsar and had tea at a mamak shop near my house,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

Samad, more popularly known as Pak Samad, instead accused Khalid of fabricating a story to justify the police arresting him at his home in Bangsar at 12.40am on Wednesday.

In a press conference earlier today, IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said Samad had quietly sneaked back into his house after midnight, forcing police to take him into custody only then.

“He only came back at midnight, he came back quietly and we were waiting. So we took him in,” Khalid told the media after attending a forum on crime at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lu
