“This public campaign orchestrated by the authorities and pro-Umno newspapers against one helpless woman is cowardly and disgraceful,” lawyers N. Surendran and Latheefa Koya said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur today…
The lawyers said the ministry, the Prime Minister’s Department and Jakim should realise that Maznah had not been found guilty of any offence, whether by the civil or syariah courts.

Lawyers tick off deputy minister, Jakim for not letting sleeping dogs lie
Maznah Yusof’s lawyers want Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Datuk Jailani Johari to retract his statement that the dog trainer required rehabilitation for her morals, or face a possible defamation suit.
The 38-year-old has been at the centre of a storm this past week over a three-year-old video clip showing her bathing her dogs. Police remanded her for two days in Segamat but released her without any charge.
“It appears that the various ministries and Jakim are acting as ‘judge, jury and executioner’, without giving Chetz the basic right to defend herself. They are also encroaching upon the functions of the judiciary by condemning Chetz publicly without due process or trial.
…
Jailani…..said yesterday that Maznah required rehabilitation by the Islam Development Department (Jakim) and that she was morally defective (‘memulihkan akhlak’).
“The statement is mischievous, baseless and prejudicial to Chetz Yusof’s legal rights as a person under investigation. We are shocked that the ministry has made a public attack upon the conduct and morals of a private individual,” the lawyers said.
“It is even more shocking that this is being done in the holy month of Ramadan. This spirit of intolerance and bigotry is unacceptable and un-Malaysian.”

Chetz insulted, mocked Islam, says Jakim
According to Jakim’s director-general ” such a provocative is usually committed by a few non-Muslim individuals.”
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has decided that the “1 Hari di Hari Raya” video clip suggesting that Muslims could celebrate Aidilfitri with dogs has insulted Islam and an irresponsible act.
Its director-general Othman Mustapha said the video recording owner had clearly insulted the faith and provoked the sensitivities of Muslims in Malaysia who belonged to the Shafie mazhab (sect), which prohibited Muslims from holding or touching dogs and if they did, they must cleanse themselves.
He said the “takbir raya” which sang praises for the greatness of Allah but played in the background in the video recording while its owner was doing something unIslamic, had also provoked the sensitivities of Muslims.
“Such a video recording should not be made by a Muslim as he or she should respect the feelings of other Muslims.
“The action of the video recording owner appears to have mocked and challenged the Islamic faith of Muslims.
“Such a provocation is usually committed by a few non-Muslim individuals,” he added in a statement, here.

NO, HE WASN’T BLAMING NON-MUSLIMS FOR PUTTING UP THE DOG VIDEO! He was speaking in general…
On 31 July 2013, Muhyiddin was reported as sayng that “non-Muslims are insulting our religion” and that the MCMC should act. It was assumed by the mass-media (mainstream and alternative) that he was rteferring to the dog video.
Now, on 3 August, he denies that he was talking about the dog video.
Question: Why did it take him so long before he could get Bernama to make a correction?

Muhyiddin was not referring to “Satu hari di Hari Raya” video clip – Bernama
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was only making a general statement and not specifically referring to the YouTube video clip entitled “Satu Hari di Hari Raya” when he issued a reminder to the people to refrain from touching on the sensitivities of the Muslim community.
Bernama in its earlier report had said the deputy prime minister’s statement on Tuesday was referring to the video clip which showed an individual appearing to perform ritual ablutions by washing her hands and feet but then did the same to three dogs.
…
What he actually said was: “Certain parties have belittled and mocked our religion lately and hopefully it will not persist as to cause tension, as what is happening in other Islamic countries.” – Bernama, August 3, 2013

The Malaysian Consultative Council on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taosim (MCCBCHST) has criticised Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for singling out non-Muslims on grounds that they allegedly insulted Islam.
“The MCCBCHST is shocked by what seems to be an unwarranted accusation against all non-Muslims by no less than the deputy prime minister of Malaysia, said MCCBCHST president Sardar Jagir Singh in a statement today.
…
He said Muhyiddin should put his statement into perspective – that all sorts of Malaysians of various religion have insulted each other, but their numbers are small.
Jagir added that Muhyiddin’s “sweeping statement” was possibly incendiary, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, where Muslims’ consciousness is heightened.
“Who will get provoked into a reaction? No one can predict this but we pray nothing will happen,” he said.
He added that in this holy month of Ramadan, it would be best that the focus be on reconciliation, making peace, and living in harmony.

Perkasa wants fatwa on handling dogs
Malay rights group Perkasa has called on Malaysian Muslim clerics to have a fatwa on dog-handling in the wake of the Muslim dog trainer video controversy recently.
Its secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali said too much time had been spent criticising Maznah Mohd Yusof, who was detained by police over her YouTube clip, when the authorities should be asking themselves how this could have happened.
But he still wants her punished.

Ambiga also took a swipe at Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for jumping the gun on the video controversy by suggesting that it was the work of a non-Muslim.
But she disagreed with the call by certain quarters to probe the deputy prime minister for sedition.
“I am not fan of the Sedition Act. I will not advocate the use of this Act against anyone,” she explained.
However, Ambiga said she was appalled that the deputy prime minister made such a provocative statement.
Malaysiakini
Since news of her canine Hari Raya video broke, Maznah Mohd Yusof, or better known as Chetz, has become a household name.
The 38-year-old Muslim dog trainer received death threats, the imam in her neighbourhood allegedly attempted to assault her and the police have arrested her.
She is now being held for investigation under the Penal Code and Sedition Act.
Commenting on this, former Bar Council president S Ambiga expressed concern over the harassment faced by the dog-trainer in the hands of the police.
“I am deeply worried for her safety as well as about the threats she has been receiving,” she added.
Ambiga, who is also Bersih 2.0 chairperson, said it was up to the individual whether one agreed or disagreed with the video.
“My concern, however, is related to the over-the-top responses to Maznah’s video,” she told Malaysiakini.

Dog-trainer Maznah to be freed from remand BUT her troubles not over yet – Latheefa
Written by Malaysia Chronicle
KUALA LUMPUR – Animal lover Maznah Yusof, who found herself in serious trouble over a ‘dog’ video said to be insulting to Muslims, will be released from police remand today, thanks in no small to the huge public uproar that followed what was perceived to be her unfair arrest.
“It is not a victory although it is better than spending another day in remand. Also, the authorities did not release her unconditionally, which is what they should have done,” one of Maznah’s lawyer Latheefa Koya told Malaysia Chronicle.
“What they did was instead to to bring her to the Magistrates’ court again to execute a bond under Section 118 of the CPC (Criminal Procedure Code).”
Political watchers following the case say Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government may be just taking a breather before deciding on how best to exploit Chetz’s case for maximum political mileage.

YouTube user who revived the dog video
While Maznah Mohd Yusof is investigated by the police, no action has been taken against the mysterious netizen who resuscitated her three-year-old video.
KUALA LUMPUR: Little is known about YouTube content owner “acaiseven fiska” apart from the fact that he enjoys taking joyrides on his motorcycle at night and is a fan of a Thai lady who performs native song covers.
His uploads are few – only three videos, and only one of them an original creation – and his profile picture is innocuous. It depicts a young male sitting across a desk from an old man.
But acaiseven fiska sparked a firestorm when he resuscitated Maznah Mohd Yusof’s three-year-old Hari Raya video of her and her dogs in his YouTube page on Monday.
Affixing the video with the provocative title “Video menghina Islam .. 1 hari di hari raya” (video insulting Islam. 1 day in hari raya), Acaiseven fiska wrote in its description:
“Lepas sekor2 mainkan agama islam… buruk btoi. Mohon ambil tindakan….mana menteri KDN….sila bukak mata sikit… SHARE DAN TERUS SHARE !!”
(One after another, these animals keep demeaning Islam… this is horrible. Please take action… where is the Home Minister….please open your eyes a little… share and keep sharing!!).
…
Amid all the uproar, acaiseven fiska has decided to capitalise on the issue’s notoriety for his “financial” gain by allowing advertisements in the video.
While money pours into acaiseven fiska’s bank account as more people watch the video, Maznah remains remanded in the Segamat police headquarters and risks being charged under the Sedition Act and Section 298A of the Penal Code.
That is the price she has to pay for reminding viewers three years ago to celebrate Aidilfitri together, irrespective of species, colour and origin.

MCMC to refer to Jakim on Raya dog video
If Jakim finds that the video has provoked Islamic sensitivities, then the MCMC will decide that the case be referred to the AG Chambers.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will refer to the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) before deciding on the action to be taken over a video on the Hari Raya celebration said to have insulted Islam.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Jakim’s views and advice were needed to decide whether the video had really defiled the sanctity of Islam.
“If Jakim finds that the video has provoked Islamic sensitivities, then the MCMC will decide that the case be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” he said.

Religious leaders urge Muhyiddin to be DPM for all Malaysians, not only for Muslims
Religious leaders ticked off Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) for his statement that non-Muslims were insulting Islam, insisting instead that the reverse was taking place in Malaysia.
They also called on Muhyiddin to be the deputy prime minister for all Malaysians and not for Muslims only.
Malaysia Hindu Sangam president Datuk R.S. Mohan Shan insisted that what he said was not true and pointed out cases of Muslims insulting Hinduism, their worship and practices.
“Even their civil servants are insulting our community and religion,” he said, citing the example of Selangor Umno chief Datuk Seri Noh Omar calling for action to be taken against the complainant in the SK Seri Pristana school canteen issue.
“In fact action should be taken against the principal who asked her students to ‘balik India and China’. Why is this not taken seriously?” he asked.

Muslim dog trainer did not intend to insult Islam in Raya video
A screenshot of the video which is posted on YouTube showing Maznah wishing Selamat Hari Raya. – July 31, 2013.
The Malaysian woman behind the Raya greeting video featuring dogs did not intend to insult Islam when she shot the clip three years ago.
Maznah Mohd Yusof, 38, landed in trouble after the Umno-owned Malay daily Utusan Malaysia highlighted a video showing how she celebrated Hari Raya by bathing her dogs on the first day.
The clip showed the dog’s paw being washed while seconds later she is seen washing her legs as part of her ablutions while the Azan is heard.
“I love my religion. I think these people should learn about their religion first, and not misinterpret my video,” she said today.
“My religion has taught me about the importance of cleanliness…hence this why in the video, I am cleaning myself and my dogs,” she added.

Muhyiddin said yesterday that “the callousness of some towards Islam and Muslim sensitivities” could spark disharmony among Malaysians.
“Is this a manifestation of the assumption of some quarters that we (Muslims) are weak and that they could walk all over us? Or that we are afraid to react when others insult the sanctity of Islam?” the deputy prime minister had said during a breaking fast event in Putrajaya.
“No Muslim has made fun of other faiths,” he noted.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should apologise for jumping the gun and blaming non-Muslims for being behind a video clip depicting a dog undergoing ablution similar to Muslims before prayers, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang said today.
“He should apologise for condemning the video without checking the facts,” said the Gelang Patah MP in a statement in Kuala Lumpur today.
…
PKR Legal and Human Rights Bureau head Latheefa Koya ticked off Muhyiddin for blaming non-Muslims for the video.
“Muhyiddin’s warning towards non-Muslims is highly irresponsible and unfair,” said Latheefa.
“We condemn the irresponsible and opportunistic reaction by the DPM to stoke religious and racial tension by pitting Muslims against non-Muslims without bothering to check what the actual content of the video was,” she said in a statement.

Police arrest woman over dog ablutions video
A woman has been arrested today over a three-year-old video clip showing a dog being washed that mimicked Muslim ablutions with Eid prayers and a Hari Raya song in the background.

The clip was re-posted on YouTube video-sharing site yesterday with the title Video Menghina Islam (video insulting Islam), drawing flak from many viewers.

Woman in Hari Raya dog video arrested
Woman in the controversial Hari Raya dog video has been arrested and taken to Bukit Aman following public outcry.
PETALING JAYA: Dog trainer Maznah Mohd Yusof has been arrested following a public outcry over a three-year-old YouTube video showing her bathing her dogs and wishing viewers Selamat Hari Raya.
According to law reform NGO Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), Maznah, or better known as Chetz, was arrested by police around 4.30pm and taken to Bukit Aman for questioning.
“She called me and said she was being taken to the Bukit Aman commercial crime division. She did say she is under arrest,” lawyer Latheefa Koya told FMT.
…
Several Malay non-governmental organisations (NGO) lodged a police report against Maznah after being “shocked and insulted” to discover the video on their Facebook timeline.
“I, who champion for Islam in this Muslim group, feel the individual has committed a grievous insult towards all Muslims in Malaysia,” reads the report that was lodged at the Dang Wangi police station at 11.27 am today.
“It is not right for the concept of ablution, a method for which Muslims clean themselves, to be equated with washing dogs’ legs. Clearly such an insult is akin to challenging the patience of Muslims, especially in this month of Ramadan.”
The report was lodged by Ruhizat Safie, from self-proclaimed Muslim NGO Pertubuhan Martabat Jalinan Muhibah Malaysia (MJMM), who urged the police to take “stern, drastic action” against Maznah.
The report was supported by other NGOS who claim to represent the majority of the Malays in the country, including Secretariat NGO Negeri Selangor, BATAS Malaysia, and Paduka Master Rock.
MJMM president Abdul Rani Abdullah called for the arrest of the video producers, stressing: “We are angry, insulted and sad. Dogs are dirty in Islam.”
Nevertheless, the Quran makes no mention of dogs being dirty in Islam or to Muslims.
On the contrary, according to ex-Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin, a person who cares for dogs is rewarded in Islam, and hunting dogs is also allowed by the religion.
