Jalan Lahat bridge opens to traffic
IPOH: Broad smiles were seen on the faces of motorists in Menglembu as the newly-renovated bridge on Jalan Lahat near here was opened to the public after a number of delays.
Launched in June 2009, the RM6.5 million project was supposed to be completed two years later, but was delayed by a number of complications involving the piping works and telecommunication cables that ran along the bridge.
Ipoh mayor Datuk Roshidi Hashim, who was on hand to officiate the opening ceremony of the new bridge, apologised for the city council’s oversight on the matter.
“On behalf of the Ipoh City Council, I would like to offer my sincere apology for the unforeseen circumstances that caused the prolonged inconvenience.

A PROMISE NOT KEPT!
IS THE BRIDGE AND ROAD OPEN TO TRAFFIC YET?
It was supposed to have been passable from 15 September, 2013, that is, about a week ago. In April this year, Ipoh Mayor, Dato’ Roshidi Hashim had announced that the bridge would be completed and opened to transport by June. Then, it was postponed, and postponed again.
WAIT FOR MY REPORT. I shall go and see for myself.

A PROMISE NOT KEPT!
No, the bridge is still closed. See for yourself.
If that sign is too small to read, try this one.
Work is still going on. Notice the digger on the far right of the photo?
Here is a close-up of the same digger.
“Promises are made to be broken.”

Lahat Road Bridge Update
The Lahat road bridge over Sungai Guntong will be open for traffic on September 15 without further delay.

Ipoh Echo had reported in its print edition dated August 1 that one lane of the bridge would be open to traffic before Hari Raya. However, the plan was postponed due to safety concerns and had since been rescheduled to September 15.
This reschedule was highlighted to Ipoh Echo by a spokesman for MBI’s drainage section when enquiring about the reason for the additional delay.
In April this year, Ipoh Mayor, Dato’ Roshidi Hashim had announced that the bridge would be completed and opened to transport by June.
The bridge upgrade project is part of a flood mitigation project which started in 2010. The project costing RM4.89 million was scheduled for completion a year later but has been delayed till now.

Flood mitigation project more than 80% complete, says Roshidi
Ill project: Construction of the bridge over Sungai Guntong in Jalan Lahat was delayed because utility cables had not been re-routed away from the site.
THE much-delayed RM4.89mil flood mitigation project along Jalan Lahat in Ipoh is more than 80% complete and can be opened to road users by June.
Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim said only the alteration to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) electricity cables and road construction works remained.
“There are TNB cables that still need to be re-routed away from the construction site and I will speak to TNB personally as I do not want any more delays.
“To me, this is an ‘ill project’ delayed by on-site problems and the council has been doing its best to expedite its completion,” he said after chairing the Ipoh City Council’s full board meeting on Friday.
It was reported last April that the stretch between Jalan Klebang Utara and Hala Perusahaan Menglembu 3 off Jalan Lahat was closed to traffic since June 2011 to enable drainage upgrading works near the Sungai Guntong bridge.
Residents complained that the prolonged road closure created unnecessary hassle for them.

Flood mitigation project to end by April
Accompanying him on his visit was the Ipoh City Council (MBI) Road engineer Rizauddin Mohd Rodzi.
Dr Mah said about 65 per cent of the scheduled work had been completed and action would be taken against the earlier contractor who failed to detect the problem and complete the work on time.
The stretch of road heading towards Jalan Klebang Utara and Hala Perusahaan Menglembu in Jalan Lahat had been closed since October 2010 for the upgrading works on the drainage system near the Sungai Guntong bridge.
This had irked the residents and motorist in the area as they have had to use an alternative route the past two years. The prolonged closure was a nuisance as it was a hassle getting to Menglembu on a daily basis.
A resident, who declined to be named, said he had to go around Hala Perusahaan Kledang before getting to Menglembu.
He added that most of the residents and motorists had doubts whether the project would be completed and had lost faith in the authorities.
