Najib brave to buck global trend of equal opportunity, says Utusan

Umno-owned Mingguan Malaysia described Datuk Seri Najib Razak as brave for implementing a Bumiputera affirmative action policy when the global trend was towards equal opportunity, saying strengthening the Bumiputera economy is not a sin.

“The Bumiputera community is still lagging behind in all sectors including corporate, business and ownership of assets. As Najib said, if the rights of the majority race are not upheld or they felt sidelined, the country would not enjoy peace and stability in the long term,” the writer wrote in his Mingguan Malaysia weekly column.

Awang Selamat is the pseudonym for the collective voice of Utusan Malaysia’s editors, although the column is written as if it was the voice of one person.

Advertise more in Utusan, Najib tells gov’t depts, GLCs

The prime minister has urged government departments and government-linked companies (GLCs) to advertise more in Umno mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia so as to ensure the Malay daily’s capability to compete in the long run.

Najib Abdul Razak said it was important for the 75-year-old newspaper to be sustainable in the current media landscape.

Najib, who was delivering his speech during Utusan‘s new building launching ceremony on Jalan Enam, off Jalan Chan Sow Lin today, also announced that the street name is to be changed to Jalan Utusan.

“This Jalan Enam had no meaning, right? So let’s name it Jalan Utusan,” he announced, drawing loud applause from the guests.

Najib was responding to an earlier inquiry by the daily’s executive chairperson Hashim Makaruddin if the government was willing to rename the street as Jalan Utusan.

I too was young once, I too wanted to change the world – Najib

Written by Malaysia Chronicle

KUALA LUMPUR – Under fire from all sides, Prime Minister Najib Razak is going through one of his toughest periods after leading his BN coalition to its weakest ever performance in a general election.

But by keeping silent, Najib has also played into his enemies’ hands. He has made himself appear weak and without political will. Perhaps sensing this, Najib tried to give a sense of how tough the going can get during a speech last week.

“I was also young once and I remember at that time I thought just give us the chance, give us the power, we can change the world. But when I had the chance to be a politician and became an MP and an administrator, I realized it’s not so easy to effect change as I had thought,” Najib said in his key-note address at the Perdana Fellows award ceremony last week.

“But we can still do so as long as we have the policies, the programs, commitment and the political will. This will reduce the gap between idealism and reality. We have to understand there is a gap between what we thought we could do and reality.”

However, his critics are unlikely to be impressed or convinced by his speech, especially with regards to his identifying ‘political will’ as one of the key ingredients to success.

To them, these are “lame excuses” and political will is the very quality that Malaysians have found sorely missing during Najib’s 5-years in office so far.
