A reader asked, “Why the campaign against Giant and not Mydin?”

We know that Mydin is not owned by Chinese.

Mydin was founded in 1918 by Mr Gulam Husen Jamal, father to Mr Mydin. Their shop in Penang was burnt down to the ground during the World War II and they lost everything. But strong determination, perseverance and faith has made one of his children, namely Mr Mydin Mohamed, to continue the trades of wholesaling.

In 1957, he opened his first shop which was a small wooden shop named Syarikat Mydin Mohamed in Jalan Tok Hakim, Kota Bharu, Kelantan by selling toys & also general merchandise with his own hard-earned money.

With the help of his immediate sons, the business spreads its operations to Kuala Terengganu in 1979 and later made their presences in Klang Valley at Jalan Masjid India in 1989. From then on MYDIN has grown steadily at a commendable pace. With its vision to be the world’s leading distributor of competitive Halal goods & services in Malaysia, it is now known as MYDIN MOHAMED HOLDINGS BHD.

As of May 2012, there are 94 outlets nationwide which include seven hypermarkets, 18 emporiums, three bazaars, 52 mini-marts that operate as MyMydin, nine convenience stores that operate as MyMart and six franchise outlets operating as Mydin Mart.

Mini-mart chain ‘killing our livelihood’, claim retailers

A traders association gathered outside two chain mini-mart outlets in Shah Alam yesterday to protest against the chains operated by a hypermarket which the group claims are “killing our livelihood”.

Around 30 protesters and members of the Malaysian Muslim Wholesalers and Retailers Association (Mawar) shouted slogans and heckled the staff outside a 99 Speedmart outlet for around an hour this afternoon, before leaving to gather in front of another mini-mart operated by Giant hypermarket.

NONEThey held up placards that read, among others, ‘99 Speedmart, 450 outlets – 1Family’ and ‘Giant Kills Minimarkets’.

Bazeer Ahmed, the adviser to Mawar, said that local families are losing their livelihood to the big chains, which through their capacity to buy in bulk, are pushing the small traders out of business.

Bazeer also said that the chains would be bad for the community in the long run.

Their presence will increase the rental price of shoplots as they are willing to rent a shoplot at a price higher than others, he claimed.

“In the initial stage, the prices of their goods are quite cheap but when all the other small grocery stores close, they would monopolise the business,” he warned.

Hypermart plans to open 500 mini markets in next five years

LEADING retailer Giant, which currently operates 128 hypermarkets and superstores nationwide, will open 500 mini-markets in the next five years as part of its expansion plans and to give the people more shopping options.

The retailer plans to open at least 20 such outlets this year, mainly located in the Klang Valley. Each outlet will cover an area of 280sq m.

“In fact, we opened the first Giant mini-market in Shah Alam this morning. We will be doing the formalities in due course,” he told reporters at the opening of the Giant super store here.

Hong Kong-based Dairy Farm International owns the Giant chain of stores.
…..

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hasan Malek, who had earlier opened the store, said the Government would continue to assist local entrepreneurs and traders to market their goods.

“We encourage the opening of such stores as it will create competition and directly benefit consumers who would be able to buy household stuff at low prices,” he added.
