Project manager’s death: Family demands answers
Cheong Fook Meng died after he was apprehended by the police for attempting to evade a roadblock on July 4, but status of the case is yet unknown.
PUCHONG: An opposition MP today urged the police to give an explanation and expedite investigations into the death of project manager Cheong Fook Meng on July 4.
Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo said the deceased’s family want answers from the police as there has been no update on the case’s status.
“We have contacted the investigating officer (IO), however, until now we have not gotten any information,” he said.
…
Gobind said a letter was sent to the pathologist at HKL to get copies of the post-mortem report.
“However, we were told that the report has not been completed and will take time to be completed,” said Gobind.
‘Are the police serious about this case?’
Gobind said the reason given was due to the delay of obtaining the Chemistry Department’s report.
He questioned whether the police is taking the case seriously.
“Are they not serious in handling the case? Is it because they know that there was something wrong in the way they restrained the deceased?
“I want to ask the police, is that the reason why they are not taking the case seriously?” he asked.

When the wife of the latest death-in-custody victim Cheong Fook Meng received a call from her husband’s handphone at 1.43am last Thursday, the last thing she expected was to hear a nurse from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) asking her to come to the mortuary to identify Cheong’s body.
“They told me my husband was dead, and that I had to come to the hospital to identify the body,” said Julia Kwa Siew Woo, 46.
“At first I couldn’t believe it. I thought he had been involved in an accident because he was in the emergency ward. I was traumatised, and fainted when I heard the news. I had to lie down to compose myself,” Kwa said.
…..
So, upon hearing the nurse’s voice telling her that her husband was dead, Kwa’s vision began spinning out of focus.
Still in a state of shock, Kwa and her two daughters drove to the hospital mortuary, with the help of her stepson, Simon.
There, what was left of Cheong’s physical remains were wrapped in cloth. Kwa’s mind was devoid of thought or feeling as she peeled away the linens from his face.
“I couldn’t think of anything. I could only hug him,” she said.
…..
The distraught widow said she had to leave the room, but not before she noticed that her husband’s face was “slightly black”. Her daughter also said that his feet had been darkened, but was unsure of the cause.

Simon, 28, said there is also uncertainty about his father’s alleged offence.

A 53-year-old Chinese businessman died yesterday after he was intercepted and detained by the police for allegedly beating a red light at Kuala Lumpur city centre.
According to a report in China Press which quoted sources from the police, Chong Foo Ming was foaming at the mouth soon after being subdued and handcuffed by the cops at Jalan Imbi .
The sources told the Chinese daily that the incident happened around 12 midnight yesterday when police patrols found Chong behaving suspiciously and wanted to question him, but he responded by accelerating his car and later making a U-turn to flee.
The police patrols called up another three colleagues to chase the deceased and have him detained.
“When the police (saw him foaming at the mouth), they quickly called an ambulance to send him to hospital but he was later declared dead,” claimed the sources.
Chong’s daughter said her father was driving alone in his Waja to meet his friend at a restaurant nearby.
“Apparently after my father parked his car, the patrol police instructed him to show his documents after allegedly beating a red light, but he refused.”
She believed that the deceased was foaming at the mouth while he was confronting the police.
Declared dead at 1.43am
The ambulance arrived after 20 minutes and performed emergency aid on Chong, but it was in vain and he was declared dead at 1.43am, said the daughter.
“The friend who saw him later saw that he had been handcuffed at the back and was lying on the floor, but was unsure whether there was any sign of assault on his body,” she was quoted as saying.
The report said police suspected Chong had died from a heart attack, but the daughter claimed that her father was healthy and free from illness.
