‘Keretapi Sarong’ on track in US
WASHINGTON: They may live on the other side of the world but the spirit of Malaysia still lives in their hearts.
………..
Reggi Pagan, an American living in the Boston Metro area, had never heard of sarong but the uniqueness of the traditional outfit triggered her interest to join Keretapi Sarong 2013. — Bernama

Strangely enough, neither the police nor RapidKL officials interfered with the flash mob.
In fact, some RapidKL officials were seen sporting sarongs in support of the event.

Sarong party-goers mob the train
More than 200 people took part in a sarong-themed flash mob on the RapidKL train on Saturday.
KUALA LUMPUR: Hundreds of Malaysians thronged KL’s railways in what appeared to be the city’s first sarong-wearing flash mob.
Termed “Keretapi Sarong” (literal for “Sarong Railway”), the event saw more than 200 young people sporting sarongs on the Kelana Jaya LRT line.
Gathering at the KL Sentral LRT station at 4pm on Saturday, the crowd broke into groups of 10 and more before boarding the train. Their objective was to gather at the KLCC Park by 5:30pm.
Keeping the crowd busy was Keretapi Sarong’s organisers Random Alphabets, who directed these groups to get off at several LRT stations along the way.

Feeling so right in the sarong

KUALA LUMPUR – Commuters who boarded the train at KL Sentral were met with the strange sight of sarong-clad fellow passengers.
About 500 people dressed in sarongs boarded trains at 4pm yesterday while singing Rasa Sayang to the accompaniment of kompang and djembes, as part of the Keretapi Sarong event.
For some, this was their first time wearing the traditional garment.
“If it weren’t for this event, we would have never got the chance to wear the sarong,” said Justine Tan, 20, a law student from Brickfields Asia College (BAC).
She was seen with other BAC classmates, some of whom had borrowed sarongs for the event.
Ashalia Yusof, 24, a producer, was there to pay tribute to her late father who died four years ago.

You can’t go wrong with a
sarong, says fashion designer
PETALING JAYA: You can’t go wrong with a sarong, says fashion designer Datuk Tom Abang Saufi, who prizes the traditional garment for its versatile and practical qualities.
Versatile: Datuk Tom Abang Saufi (right) and her sister Habsah showing off their atelier’s designs. The 57-year-old even advocates wearing a sarong to formal events.
“I wore a sarong to my Datukship ceremony,” she said with a smile.
“It’s very easy to make it formal as it is such a classic and beautiful garment.”
For Tom, the sarong is part of our tradition.
“For many of us, our cradles were made from a sarong. You can use a sarong as a dressing room at the beach with someone holding each end. You can use it as a swimsuit. When you tie it correctly, it traps air and helps you float. That’s how many of us in the kampung learned how to swim,” she said.
…………..
Tom expressed excitement over the Keretapi Sarong project organised by Random Alphabets, which calls for Malaysians and foreigners to don a sarong and board trains around KL at 4pm today.
“Young people must wear the sarong to make it hip again, and not dismiss it as something their granny would wear.”

Board the ‘keretapi sarong’ this weekend
PETALING JAYA: Ditch your jeans and skirts and don the sarong while taking the train this Saturday.
— AZMAN GHANI / The Star Rail-ly fancy sarong: Participants riding on an LRT during last year’s Keretapi Sarong in Kuala Lumpur. Now into its second year, Keretapi Sarong is an event modelled after the No Pants Subway movement, when 1,200 New Yorkers rode the subway without wearing pants in a snowstorm in 2009.
Random Alphabets (RA), the organiser of the event, wants everyone to board trains in their sarong at 3pm.
“Last year’s event saw a kebaya group and this year we want to see more different styles.
“Wear your sarong with a white shirt, a football jersey, or even a cosplay outfit.
“Come as a sarong-clad Jedi or a sarong ninja,” said Zain HD from RA.
This year’s event is set to go beyond Malaysia as at least five cities have initiated local chapters of Keretapi Sarong.
“So far, we have been receiving updates of planned chapters from London, Melbourne, Washington DC, Boston and Philadelphia,” said RA volunteer Suzi Zahari.
The meeting point and the route of the gathering will be revealed closer to the event day.
During the event, participants are also encouraged to tell their “sarong stories” on a paper and hold it up.
