MADURAI: Two days after police raided VCD shops in Tuticorin and seized electronic items and pirated CDs of latest Tamil films, a man was held for selling pirated CDs of kamal Haasan’s latest controversial flick ‘Vishwaroopam’ on Saturday.
Based on a tip-off that pirated versions of Vishwaroopam was being sold at the shop, sleuths from Tuticorin central police station raided a music shop. However, police did not find the pirated CDs inside the shop. But when the team examined a motorcycle parked in front of the shop, they found CDs of the film hidden inside.
In a bid to escape police scrutiny, the shop owner Subramanian had hid the CDs in the motorcycle and was selling them. Police arrested Subramanian and seized the CDs and the two-wheeler.

Tamil Review: Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vishwaroopam’ is brilliant
Tamil Review: Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vishwaroopam’ is brilliant
You know the feeling when you have to wait until the end of the week to catch a movie. Somehow, all your friends seemed to have seen it and they think you will absolutely love it. We’ve been through this, but it has always been “just a movie”. Only this time, the wait has been far too long – longer than just the opening day and longer than the blockbuster weekend. Amidst all the drama, Vishwaroopam has made all of Tamil Nadu look forward to a court verdict and has come closest to stop people from succumbing to piracy. Having already lost a good portion of what’s at stake, Kamal Hassan’s so called “magnum-opus” is here.
After a couple of weeks packed with commotion, it can be understood why Kamal Hassan gave his everything to ‘Vishwaroopam’. The moment you set your eyes upon it, you know that it was worth the wait. It boasts a level of thought that raises the bar for even Kamal Hassan who is known for his dedication. The end product invariably is an action packed thriller that leaves behind most fundamental laws of Tamil cinema, and with all its disparity holds on to stay that way.
The production value behind Vishwaroopam is just stupendous. You haven’t seen spy films from India like this before, not in any age and as the plot pulsates between the backstory and the present, you are soon left unable to keep count of the sophistications. Kamal’s presence is benevolent across departments. His witty dialogues that possess crude and groovy meanings are plenty. Some of them, which survived the screening, are truly outrageous and impressive. Despite the gory nature of the screenplay, the film offers something for everyone (maybe except kids) and lets you dwell on a handful of little tales until the last frame. Shortly put, it’s brilliant.

‘Vishwaroopam’ still in the can
Home Minister undecided on the fate of spy-thriller
PETALING JAYA: Spy-thriller “Vishwaroopam” remains in the can because the Home Ministry has yet to decide on the fate of the Kamal Hassan movie.
National Film Censorship Board’s (LPF) enforcement and control division secretary Razak Derahman said today that no decision has been made on the fate of the movie.
“The 16 ‘cuts’ were suggested by local film distributor, Lotus Five Star. The higher authorities here have yet to decide on the status of the movie,” said Razak.
The highest authority in this case would be Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein as the censorship board comes under the ambit of the Home Ministry.

Vishwaroopam is a 2013 Indian Tamil spy thriller film written, directed and co-produced by Kamal Haasan who also enacts the lead role. The film has Pooja Kumar, Rahul Bose, Andrea Jeremiah and Jaideep Ahlawat in supporting roles. Produced simultaneously in Hindi as Vishwaroop, the film features soundtrack composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, with lyrics by Vairamuthu and Haasan himself while Javed Akhtar translated them for the Hindi version.
The film released worldwide, excluding Tamil Nadu, on 25 January 2013 while the Hindi version was released on 1 February 2013. Legal controversies regarding the film’s portrayal of Islamism arouse as several Muslim extremist groups protested the film’s release in Tamil Nadu, resulting in an official ban being imposed on the film in the state for 15 days by the Madras High Court. The ban resulted in similar decisions being made in Sri Lanka and Malaysia while release was delayed in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka. Despite the fragmented release, Vishwaroopam garnered generally favourable reviews from critics, most of whom had downplayed claims of the film being anti-Muslim. Heeding to the requests of Muslim extremist groups, scenes perceived as controversial were removed, allowing the film for release on 7 February 2013 in Tamil Nadu.
