Sharifah is a liar, says Bawani
UUM law student lodges a police report over SW1M president’s claim that she had made a rude gesture at a forum in December.
PETALING JAYA: UUM law student KS Bawani lodged a police report yesterday against Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen for claiming that she had shown her the middle finger before walking out of a forum at the university on Dec 4.
“I categorically deny ever making such a gesture. Sharifah is a liar. Her statement has tarnished my name in the public. Her allegation is false and defamatory,” Bawani told FMT today.
She lodged a report against Sharifah at Kajang district police headquarters yesterday.
“Sharifah also told FMT that SW1M would be uploading a full version of the video which would reveal that I showed the middle finger. I’m waiting to see it. I want the police to investigate and get to the bottom of her preposterous claim,” she added.
………….
n an immediate reaction to Bawani’s police report, Sharifah denied uttering defamatory statements in the interview she gave to FMT.
“Surprisingly FMT wrote the article, yet I cannot discern any defamatory statement in the article,” she said in a text message.

Bawani silent on next move
A police report and a defamation suit are among the options that Bawani may take against Suara Wanita 1Malaysia chief, Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin.
PETALING JAYA: Second year law student KS Bawani is silent on her next move against Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) chief, Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin’s allegation that Bawani had made a rude gesture before leaving the forum
“I will respond to the matter soon. I may consider lodging a police report against her on charges of defamation I will have to discuss the matter with lawyers,” Bawani told FMT
Bawani was responding to allegations by Sharifah that she had shown Sharifah the middle finger before leaving the hall.

‘Listen, she raised her middle finger’
SW1M chief Sharifah Zohra says student Bawani was rude during the forum at UUM.
KUALA LUMPUR: Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) chief Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin, who shot to notoriety last month over her verbal brawl with student KS Bawani, claims the latter made a rude gesture and this was videotaped.
“Bawani showed me the middle finger and walked out of the hall alone,” she told FMT last night.
“The students applauded me. What does this say?”
…………….
Did I shout at her, or get physical with her? No, I didn’t. I only said ‘Listen, listen’ and ‘Let me speak’ several times. And yet she still went on and on even after I took away the microphone. She only stopped after the rest of the panelists told her that they had received the point that she had raised.
“People fail to see that I was calm when I tried to stop her from talking.”
…………….
She compared Bawani unfavourably to two other students who raised questions during the session.
“The two other students asked three questions each and approached issues professionally, unlike Bawani,” she said.

Bawani: Forget video, focus on crucial issues
The law student says she wants the closure since the public has been made aware about students’ freedom of expression in local universities.
KUALA LUMPUR: KS Bawani, the law student who became an overnight sensation, wants a closure to the infamous “listen, listen, listen” video which propelled her into stardom.
“I want this to end. I don’t want to talk about the video anymore.
“The public is now aware because it shows the reality of students in campuses,” she told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall today.

PETALING JAYA: SW1M president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin has lodged a police report against PAS organ Harakah Daily and student group Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), accusing both of attempting to arouse hatred against her.
She also accused SAMM of trespassing when four of its representatives entered SW1M’s Gombak office to give her an invitation to tonight’s “Academic Freedom and Fundamental Rights” forum at the Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
“SAMM and Harakah Daily are abusing me by raising the hatred of Malaysians because I am not attending the forum,” she said in the report, lodged with the Setapak police station at 1.15 this morning.
“SAMM also has used my photograph on the banner promoting the forum and is spreading false news through the Internet by claiming that I am attending the forum.”
She also said Harakah Daily had “published a false SW1M document to imply that I am accepting the invitation”.
She denied that the signature in the document was hers and that the stamp on it was SW1M’s.

Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin – dubbed ‘Kak Listen – will not be invited to speak at any event held in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), said vice-chancellor Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.
The ban on the Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) chairperson comes in the wake of the “listen, listen, listen” controversy at a forum held at the university on Dec 8 last year.
“If we had known that the forum would create such a huge controversy, the university would not have approved the activity,” he was quoted as saying in Oriental Daily News today.
However, Mohamed Mustafa denied a claim by law student KS Bawani in an interview with Malaysiakini that students from some of UUM’s residential colleges had been forced – under the threat of expulsion – to attend the forum organised by SW1M.
…………….
Calling this a lie, Mohamed Mustafa advised Bawani not to create public pressure that could tarnish UUM’s image.
“Bawani was lying. That is her view (that students were forced to attend). These (allegations) are all rubbish,” he said, stressing that the students have freedom of expression.
He clarified that the university encourages students to participate in extra-curricular activities to accumulate credit hours, but does not compel them to do so.
Mohamed Mustafa also pointed out that Bawani is a political activist and that her actions and statements could be motivated by political interest.

Student told to ‘listen’ zips lips on Sharifah Zohra’s latest snub
GEORGE TOWN, Jan 22 – Bawani K.S. has declined comment on the woman who told her to “listen” who has snubbed a second chance to speak at a student forum tonight, saying she will leave it to the organisers to interpret Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin’s rejection of their invitation.
Sharifah Zohra, dubbed the “Listen” woman after her outburst, was also alleged to have been invited to share the same stage by the organiser, student group Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), but her organisation, Suara Wanita 1 Malaysia (SW1M), yesterday confirmed Sharifah Zohra will not be attending the “Academic Freedom and Fundamental Rights” forum.
“I have no comment on this,” the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) law student told The Malaysian Insider when asked to respond to Sharifah Zohra’s skipping out on the chance for a second face-off.

“It went viral among the students first,” said Rafizi when asked to comment on Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) president, Sharifah Zohra Jabeen’s allegation.
Yesterday, Sharifah accused a political party of doctoring the video to gain support when she offered forgiveness without repentance to UUM law student, KS Bawani.

Sucking up to Umno? Ms Listen a “SHARK” that eats her victim, then offers forgiveness?
Written by Maria Begum, Malaysia Chronicle
In what critics say is another shocking display of boorish manners and complete disconnect as to how the wider Malaysian public viewed her “listen, listen, listen” tirade, Suara Wanita 1Malaysia president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen has graciously condescended to ‘forgive’ university undergraduate KS Bawani.
Indeed, Zohra’s clumsy move is bound to unleash a fresh avalanche of criticism, and this time the scolding can be expected to be even more intense.
“Kakak Listen11x came out fighting, maafkan Bawani. Kakak ni memg ada masalah, mcm masalah jerung. Dia makan org, dia lak maafkn org ,” PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli said on his Twitter.
[Ms Listen (11 time) came out fighting, forgiving Bawani. This lady obviously has a problem like a shark has a problem. She eats someone and then wants to forgive her victim.]
……………..
“First and foremost, I forgive the young girl (Bawani) in the video for whatever she had said and done before, during and after the forum,” said Sharifah Zohra in a statement posted on a Facebook account under the name ‘Ratu Naga’ (Dragon Queen).
However after extending her forgiveness, Zohra launched into a new tirade that can best be described as political in nature.
…………….
In sharp contrast, the rather skinny Bawani showed a more humble disposition. The UUM undergraduate had on Friday said that she does not expect an apology from Sharifah, stating that the older woman was “not my enemy”.
“The system must respond to our demands. Sharifah is not in power to answer the question on free education,” said Bawani, describing the forum as reflective of the brainwashing culture prevalent at most local universities.

“I’m really not sure but it seems like she waited for her cue to come in, and then, provocational [sic]. The statement was provocative,” she said without elaborating.
A nine-minute video recording of the interview was uploaded to YouTube yesterday.

Jan 21: Far from expressing remorse over her rude outburst at a student who spoke against government policies, Barisan Nasional propagandist Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin (right) put up a brave front, even offering to forgive all parties disturbed by her act.
Zohra, who during a forum she organised under her shady outfit Suara Wanita 1Malaysia had publicly scolded student K.S. Bawani, repeated a litany of complaints typically sung by UMNO leaders and expressed regret that the public had condemned her after the ‘Listen’ incident made way into YouTube, resulting in an explosion of anger, humour and countless parodies on cyberspace.

PETALING JAYA (Jan 21, 2013): Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen has broken her silence and appealed to Malaysians to “listen… listen… listen…” to her side of the story in her altercation with University Utara Malaysia undergraduate K.S. Bawani, the video of which went viral on social media.
“First and foremost, I forgive the young girl (Bawani) in the video for whatever she had said and done before, during and after the forum,” said Sharifah Zohra in a statement posted on a Facebook account under the name ‘Ratu Naga’.
…………..
“I am bewildered to note that some irresponsible individuals had taken advantage and merchandise (sic) this phenomenal YouTube sensation.
“This issue was creatively spin (sic) to gather emotional support for an opposition party,” said Sharifah Zohra, who went on to describe the video as being “politically altered” and “sensational”.
She said since the video first made its debut on YouTube, the safety of her family and young children has been compromised after she received SMS threats.
Sharifah Zohra also claimed her detractors had failed to see that the incident was merely a “communication issue” between her and Bawani, as they had viewed only the 24-minute video, instead of a recording of the entire forum.
“Sadly, the cunning people only highlighted part four of the video,” she said, stressing that there was no act of condemning the students, nor any attempt at restricting freedom of speech at the forum.

COMMENT The Bawani-Sharifah affair has unearthed what I have suspected for 26 years of being an academic at a public university. I have long believed that Malaysian public universities prefer to train our university students to be workers in offices and not leaders of societies.
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) law student KS Bawani (right) mentions that she thought the session was a brainwashing session where a heavily one-sided anti-Bersih view was propagated. A discourse should have a balance of two opposing views to trigger critical thinking. But as I have found out after more than a quarter of century, the public university is not the place to have critical views on issues of national importance.
In my 26 years passing through the gates of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), I can hardly remember a single critical discourse held in its spacious halls. I used to listen to controversial forums held in auspicious places as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) or Universiti Malaya (UM). But now all public universities are as numb as UTM.
If controversial issues were to be discussed, we would have to go and join a forum at UCSI Universiti (the Ambiga-Khairy debate), Penang Institute or Taylor’s University where my daughter tells me that she heard PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar gave a public address. I can vouch for you that these issues or individuals would never cross the gateways of UTM. Why is this the case? Well, I will let you in on my thoughts.

Brimming with free-floating rage
FREE speech is often specifically about peeving other people — challenging social taboos or political ideals. But should someone who raises legitimate questions, such as free education and clean and fair elections, be branded as shouting fire in a crowded theatre?
Second-year law student K.S. Bawani was in such a predicament during a forum last month on student and politics. Brave Bawani refused to bawl when an “intellectual brawl” erupted between a debate panellist, Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin, and her.
She stood her ground — and all scorn was unleashed on her. Suddenly, she became unpatriotic. Suddenly, she became “Little Ambiga”, a reference to Datuk S. Ambiga, the co-chair of electoral reform movement, Bersih.
…………….
Yet, sections of the crowd applauded this woman, who did not have the mental disposition to engage in hearty debates. Therein, herd mentality surfaced despite abuses hurled at a fellow student.

The highlight of the rally was when Bawani showed up to emphasise the three main issues that she said the public should focus on following the uproar over the video.

Peaceful protest over ‘Listen, listen, listen’
Some 100 people gathered at Brickfields to demand that Sharifah Zohra Jabeen apologise to KS Bawani.
KUALA LUMPUR: Some 100 people gathered peacefully around the fountain in Little India, Brickfields this morning to protest against Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin, the little-known SW1M president turned Internet sensation after a video of her humiliating a student went viral this week.
By 11.30am, some of the predominantly Indian crowd were seen holding placards with cartoonish drawings of a shark wearing headphones along with the words ‘respect freedom of speech’. Others brandished colourful t-shirts bearing the now-infamous mantra ‘listen, listen, listen’.
In the centre of the rally, leaders of various non-governmental organisations (NGO) such as the Malaysian Indians Progressive Association (MIPAS), Tamil Action Force and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Dan Amal India Baru Malaysia (Perinnbam) took turns to publically demand Sharifah apologise to Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) student and PSM activist KS Bawani.

She said she had seen similar complaints on Facebook from students of other residential halls as well, but is unsure which particular ones or the number of students affected.
Bawani added that she was not one of them but went there of her own volition. Some 2,000 students reportedly attended the event.
The forum titled ‘Women in Politics’ was held at UUM from around 10am to 1pm on Dec 8.

INTERVIEW Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) students from some of its residential colleges were compelled to attend the infamous Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) forum under threat of expulsion, claims student KS Bawani (below).
Therefore, she said she is disappointed that the university had reportedly distanced itself from the event last month by saying that it merely provided the hall, where SW1M chairperson Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin had berated her.
“The university said it was not involved, but many students were compelled to attend the programme… If it is not a university programme, why make it compulsory?” she said during an interview with Malaysiakini yesterday.
She said among those forced to attend were first year students from Proton Student Residential Hall (DPP Proton), which sponsored the event.

The war of words between Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) law student KS Bawani, which has become hot topic of discussion in social media, has nothing to do with the Higher Education Ministry, let alone the government.
The minister, Mohamed Khaled Nordin, said the forum, in which the war of words took place, was organised by students at the university and Sharifah Zohra was invited in her capacity to be the moderator.
“In university, not all programmes are organised by the government, some are organised by the students, but it appeared that the government was being accused of organising the event and asking Sharifah to speak like that to control the minds of the students.
“Sharifah is not an academic staff of UUM or the ministry. She was invited by the students to become the moderator for the forum. I don’t even know where she’s from,”

Bawani: I don’t want an apology from Sharifah

Bawani at the press conference organised by the Coalition to Demand for Free Education at the KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here. SUNPIX by MUHAMAD ASRAFKUALA LUMPUR (Jan 18, 2013): The student activist who was insulted at a university forum last month, said that she does not expect an apology from the forum panelist Sharifah Zohra Jabeen despite calls by various quarters for a public apology.
Bawani KS became widely popular after a 20-minute video of her being berated by Sharifah for asking a question on free education in Malaysia and clarifying the court decision on the Bersih 3.0 rally, during a forum on students and politics at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) on Dec 8 went viral.
“She is not my enemy. The fight is for free education not between me and Sharifah.
“The system must respond to our demand. Sharifah is not in power to answer the question on free education,” she told a press conference earlier today at the KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here.
Bawani, who is also a coordinator for the Coalition to Demand for Free Education (GMPP), called on all those who had expressed support for her not to lose focus from the main issue – the call for free education, which is the right of every citizen.
“It is also about students’ rights to freely express their views and grouses and debate openly,” she said.
Bawani said she was compelled to ask questions during the forum because the panellists only opened the floor for two questions from about 2,300 students in the crowd and that there were many unanswered questions.
“It was interesting to note that UUM was holding a forum on students and politics but most of the points raised were advocating against street demonstrations and activism by NGOs and civil groups for various causes.
“The panelist even questioned the ‘Go Green’ campaign, saying ‘why Go Green; why not (campaign) for No Free Sex’. I do not understand how ‘Go Green’ and ‘No Free Sex’ are related,” she said, adding that she was astonished at the way the forum was conducted.

Bawani, who was told by Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen to go to Cuba or Argentina if she was looking for free education, urged the public to refrain from turning the incident into a racial issue.
She also urged the public to fight against attempts to brainwash university students into harbouring contempt against opposition and anti-establishment figures.
“The main issue here is on our education system and how university students are being brainwashed by NGOs invited to give talks to students,” she told a press conference here.
“Please do not divert it into a racial issue,” she urged.

SW1M defends Sharifah Zohra
She could not accept student Bawani’s rudeness, says a spokesperson for the NGO.
PETALING JAYA: Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) yesterday defended its president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin against the ridicule she has been subject to over the “listen, listen” video.
“She does not like it when voices are raised; that’s why she said ‘listen’ several times,” SW1M spokeswoman Ema Lee Abu Samah told FMT today.
Ema Lee also accused Universiti Utara Malaysia student KS Bawani of being rude during the forum at which the video was shot.
“Bawani was emotional, extremely loutish and dragged on with her statement,” she said.

PUTRAJAYA (Jan 17, 2013): Lawyer and activist Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan has cautioned against going overboard in criticising Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin over the “Listen, listen, listen” video clip.
“I think we shouldn’t overdo the criticism. Some of it is downright sexist and unnecessary. Enough has been said and I hope a lesson was learned from this,” she said when approached at the Putrajaya Palace of Justice yesterday.
………….
In the video that went viral last week, Sharifah repeatedly told Bawani to listen to her, and also called Ambiga a “pencetus anarki di Malaysia” (catalyst of anarchy in Malaysia).
Responding to that remark, Ambiga said: “She is welcome to say what she wants. That’s freedom of speech. What was said was disgraceful and the public outcry is fabulous.”

“Correct, Correct, Correct was the buzz word before the 12th general Election in 2008.
Listen Listen Listen will undoubtedly be THE word before the 13th General Election that must be held in 2013
The irony of it all is that, these powerful, authoritative and endearing words are immortalized and etched in the Malaysian minds by those whom the general public pour scorn and had become a subject matter of unimaginable anger and hatred.
So remember, for a paradigm shift or the attainment of a critical mass capable of effecting change, all you need is one word and it may even come from someone or somewhere most unexpected.
You see, critical thinkers say that without Judas Iscariot, Jesus would not have died on the cross and mankind will be without salvation. As such Judas Iscariot himself played a single most important role in the salvation of mankind albeit as a villain.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 17, 2013): Listen, listen, listen! Youth leaders are asking for a fair fight of facts over issues of academic freedom and students’ rights, instead of personal attacks, in light of the recent furore involving a forum speaker and an undergraduate.
The challenge was issued by a group of student leaders to undergraduate K.S. Bawani and Suara Wanita 1Malaysia president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin, following the duo’s heated exchange during a forum at Universiti Utara Malaysia last month.
…………..
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia national coordinator Norazizi Abdul Aziz today invited Sharifah Zohra and Bawani to participate in a debate to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall on Jan 22, saying it would be a platform for both parties to state their stands and to promote intellectual discourse.
“We are not out to defend either party, but rather, allow the public to make up their own minds based on facts,” he told a press conference.
Kumpulan Aktivis Mahasiswa Independen (Kami) deputy president Khalid Mohd Ismath stressed that the debate or forum was not organised to attack Sharifah Zohra or rally support for Bawani.

‘Umno woman’s remark stupid, personal’
Barisan Nasional leaders have distanced themselves from Umno Wanita member, Norhayati Saiddin’s attack on law undergraduate KS Bawani.
PETALING JAYA: Umno has distanced itself from the racially charged rants of a member of its Wanita wing against law undergraduate KS Bawani.
Umno supreme council member Saifuddin Abdullah said that Norhayati Saiddin’s post, on her Facebook page yesterday, telling Bawani to study in India if she wanted free education was “personal opinion.”
Norhayati had also posted that the Indian community were making too many demands, claiming Indians living in estates in the past never knew what a toilet was before Barisan Nasional came along.
Said Saifuddin: “This lady’s statement is her personal opinion and does not reflect Umno or BN’s stand.
“Her statement is unbecoming, especially in the context of 1Malaysia.”
Other BN leaders have also distanced themselves from Norhayati’s statement.
“It’s uncalled for and a very stupid statement,” said an angry Gerakan secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow.

Miss Bavani,
I am proud of you. You are a courageous and fine example demonstrating that universities are not a place for just learning a given syllabus for your chosen course but to have substantial grasp of world views so that collectively, like minded students like you can shape this country into a better place.
You are a breath of fresh air when we look at our Political landscape , system of education, workplace, our social atmosphere etc. that stifle “Dissent” which is one of the important and valuable component of a progressive society.
The Malaysian Bar will welcome people like you because in the Malaysian Bar we encourage dissent.
You are a great torch bearer in a cluttered environment that promotes “katak dibawah tempurung” culture disguised as “obedience” that stifle our youth from thinking out of the box.
Seeing you standing your ground, I am confident that there is hope in and for Malaysia. And that is of course if you defy the caustic, corrosive comment that anyone who compares Malaysia to another country should leave Malaysia. Stay back for your country. She needs you.
You spoke from your heart, so stay back and fight and advance the cause that you believe in. One day people will say that in Miss Bavani, there was a Rosa Parks of Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 — Student activist Bawani KS earned high praise yesterday from Bersih 2.0 co-chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan for defending the group in a verbal stand-off with controversial speaker Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin during a university forum last month.
Ambiga said the second-year law student had been brave to voice her opinion, even supporting it with facts and figures, despite being forced to stop later when Sharifah Zohra pulled her microphone stand away.
“Her argument outdid the moderator’s (Sharifah Zohra),” the former Bar Council president observed in an SMS to The Malaysian Insider.
Ambiga, a renowned lawyer and civil society activist, said Bawani, who has been dubbed “Little Ambiga” over incident, would likely have a bright future ahead of her.

PETALING JAYA: The critical comments of a Wanita Umno member regarding law student KS Bawani is causing a stir.
In her Facebook posting, Norhayati Saiddin wrote: “Deii Bawani.. kalau mau pendidikan percuma tanggechi pergi ler belajar sana India… you mother land.. sana tanggechi boleh dapat pree… ammakk!!” (Bawani… if you want free education, go and study in India, your motherland. There you can get free…)

They didn’t even know toilets. Now Indians have a lot of demands that is why BN rules this country.)
Norhayati’s Facebook also had a photograph of her posing with three other Wanita Umno members at a function.
Some people who found her comments offensive took a screen capture of the statement and Facebook and tagged her to the photo.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 ― Suara Wanita 1 Malaysia (SW1M) claims its president, Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin, has gone underground since being exposed castigating a student on YouTube as she was blackmailed over the now-viral video.
Chief administrator of the SW1M Facebook page, Emalee or better known as “Ratu Naga”, made the claim yesterday when contacted by The Malaysian Insider.
“Why I never ask her to reveal herself? Somebody blackmailed her. So I think the best way (is) for her to keep quiet and that I do all the posting and I do all the explanation,” the SW1M supreme council member and advisor said.
Emalee also said she could address the matter as she had been present during the incident at the December 8 forum held at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), which was captured in a 20-minute video clip that recently sparked an online storm.
“I ask her to go somewhere safe because she has children. Someone try to blackmail her, this issue has become quite serious,” she later said.

Viral video reveals varsity ‘brainwash’ tactics, says student

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 16 ― The university student shown being berated for her views on a viral YouTube clip has said it revealed to the public how state-funded universities use student forums to “brainwash” undergraduates.
Second-year law student Bawani KS also expressed surprise that she was now an overnight sensation for questioning panellist Sharifah Zohra Jabeen at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) student forum held last December 8.
“Now the public will know what’s happening in public universities and how they could organise a ‘students in politics’ forum and yet use it to ‘brainwash’ the students by telling them that street rallies are wrong while showing pictures of Opposition leaders like Nurul Izzah (Anwar) and telling us not to emulate them,” Bawani told The Malaysian Insider.

The 27-year-old social activist was glad that the incident went viral as it may get more people to join in her cause to fight for free education for all Malaysians.
When told she has been dubbed “Little Ambiga”, ostensibly after Bersih co-chair Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Bawani (left) laughed it off and went on to say how important it is for people to know that they should continue to fight for their rights.

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has clarified that it merely provided its hall to NGO Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) to organise the student forum which saw SW1M chairperson Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin berating law student KS Bawani.
Besides providing the venue, the university had nothing to do with the forum, UUM vice-chancellor Mohamed Mustafa Ishak (left) told several Chinese dailies yesterday.
“To link UUM with the forum is very unfair to the university authority,” Mustafa was quoted as saying by China Press.
…..
Stressing that Sharifah’s statement did not represent UUM’s stance, he praised Bawani’s courage in expressing her views.
“Actually, the attitudes of both of them were very tough. Bawani insisted on asking her questions after the question-and-answer session had ended and rattled on. This might have angered Sharifah (right),” Mustafa is quoted as saying by the Chinese daily.
“The university always gives its students the freedom to express their thoughts,” he added.
