The protest and intimidation in front of the house of Bersih co-chairman S Ambiga is something that Malaysians should condemn.
It also reflects on a troubling trend in Malaysian politics where intimidation and harassment that borders on tit for tat becomes a norm that is tolerated by the state.
The question is who are this people, what are their motives, who are directing their behavior, and what are the consequences from this actions?
If a one day Bersih demonstration could cause an irrational daily tit for tat response, what would happen if the ruling coalition losses power?
Will it cede power peacefully?

WILL AMBIGA BE ARRESTED?
AMBIGA TO BE ARRESTED AND CHARGED
IN THEIR OWN SWEET WAY IN THEIR OWN SWEET TIME
The head of Bersih and former president of the Malaysian Bar will be formally arrested then charged with a range of offences for her part in organizing and participating in Bersih 3.0. When such an arrest will occur is currently the subject of wide speculation.
The fact she will be arrested then charged over a number of offences is not disputed, although sources close to government will not confirm or deny the story and sources suggest it is a tactical decision on government’s part not to comment on the subject for the moment.
Sources reveal to GRK that the charges contemplated against Ambiga Sreenivasan are of a more serious nature than those for which Anwar Ibrahim and three other political operatives of the Pakatan Rakyat were recently charged. It is believed that the timing of any arrests will be kept a secret although, the government is believed to be confident they have ample evidence on which to move against Ambiga at any time of their choosing.

Two anti-Bersih groups have surrounded the vicinity of Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan’s residence today.
Numbering over 150, the protesters are demonstrating against Bersih for holding a rally in Kuala Lumpur on April 28.
The first group, calling themselves Halau 1.0, arrived at about 4.15pm to demand an apology from Ambiga, saying that she should leave the country if she fails to do so.
The group of about 50, led by Gerakan Belia Gagasan 1Malaysia president Shahrul Nasrun Kamaruddin, was stopped at a police roadblock set up some distance away from Ambiga’s house on Jalan Setiakasih 1, Bukit Damansara.

Joint Press Statement by Bersih 3.0 Perak
and Coalition of 51 Non Governmental Organizations.
Stop personal attacks on Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan.
Stop Invasion of Privacy. Show Decency and Mutual Respect
Date : 24.05.2012 @ Time : 11.00 am
Malaysians and in particular Perakians have followed with increasing disgust the persistant attacks on Bersih 3.0 Steering Committee Co-Chairperson Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan to intimidate and “break” her resolve.
The perpetrators have stooped so low as to have absolutely no qualms in belittling her religious sensitivities and have further undertaken acts of vulgarity and indecency unheard of in our society! And there seems to be no stopping them, not even by the powers that be. More such dirty, disgraceful and simply unacceptable activities by any standards of a civil society are being planned outside Ambiga’s home.
It is time we made our STAND known in no uncertain terms!
That is why Bersih 3.0 Perak and the coalition of more than 51 NGOs, after receiving so many calls from the public, including from people who are usually placid but now find that their patience is running out, have decided that we, the people, need to take a STAND on this matter and send a clear message to the perpetrators that this is not the Malaysia we want and hope for, for our children and future generations.
Firstly, we want justice for Ambiga. No citizen of our country should be subjected to such incessant tormenting just for speaking up for the rights of the people.
Secondly, these are not just attacks on Ambiga. These are attacks which threaten all our fundamental rights and liberties that are enshrined in our Federal Constitution.
Article 5 of the Federal Constitution states that “No person shall be deprived of his/her life or personal liberties save in accordance with the law.” The Federal Court in the case of Sivarasa Rasiah vs Badan Peguam Malaysia & Anor (2010) 3 CLJ 507 had the occasion to state that right to personal liberty includes the right to privacy.
The perpetrators are bent on using dirty intimidating tactics which are alien to our Malaysian culture for the sole purpose of silencing the majority and imposing their unsolicited will on us.
Malaysia is a beautiful country and it is so not by chance. This nation is built not only on the back of its sheer hardworking people but also by the faith and belief system brought by our fore fathers from around the world.
We are a multiethnic and multi religious society proud of our rich and diverse culture. We have lived together with mutual respect, understanding and tolerance by adhering to the moral and spiritual values in all our religions, which values underpin the very harmonious society that we enjoy till today..
So, Bersih 3.0 Perak, in collaboration with all its supporting NGOs denounce the shameful attacks on Ambiga and also denounce the dirty, intimidating and bullying culture we Malaysians have jointly fought against for so long that is now rapidly rearing its ugly head in our society again.
We, the coalition of NGOs in denouncing these dirty, intimidating and bullying tactics will adopt a moral and spiritual approach that we value and hold dear and as such we call upon all Malaysians to congregate, conduct and offer prayers in their respective religious homes and sanctuaries for Decency, Mutual Respect and Protection of Fundamental Rights of Human Beings.
Now is the right time for all Malaysians and in particular Perakians, to stand up , stand together and be counted in bringing back all these moral and spiritual values we hold dear in our society. As long as we are guided by such values, we will be a harmonious and progressive society.

Is it an attempt to sabotage Najib?
PETALING JAYA: The protests outside Bersih 3.0 chairperson S Ambiga’s residence appear to be an attempt to sabotage Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Barisan Nasional.
Commenting on the latest proposal to hold a night market outside her house in Bukit Damansara tomorrow and Friday, a MIC leader criticised the organisers for descending to despicable levels.
Party central working committee member S Vell Paari said Najib since coming into power in 2009 had made numerous attempts to win back the confidence of non-Malay voters.
“But these so-called protests are turning the clock back. It seems as if these are deliberate attempts to undermine the prime minister’s good work.
“If this continues, BN can forget about non-Malay votes. Many of my Malay friends are also disgusted with what is happening, so you can forget about their votes as well,” he told FMT.

Anti-Bersih market: Prime lot to cost from RM2,000

| Zulaikha Zulkifli 5:43PM May 21, 2012 |
As the Kuala Lumpur Petty Traders Action Council prepares for its anti-Bersih protest on Thursday and Friday, it has put a price tag starting at RM2,000 for the lot in front of Ambiga Sreenevasan’s house.
Other lots will be ‘sold’ at RM100 per stall, said Jamal Md Yunus, who heads the group.
He said the money will help cover the cost of organising the demonstration, intended to convey anger over the April 28 rally which purportedly resulted in petty traders incurring financial losses.
Wearing a yellow t-shirt with the words ‘Bersih 4.0′, Jamal was spotted in front of Ambiga’s house today.
He was there to mark out lots on the road for the stalls, for the protest dubbed ‘Bersih 4.0 – cleaning up Bersih 1, 2, 3′.

DBKL: No burger stall when we visited

Protests are good business
Patrick Lee | May 19, 2012
A number of food traders with business smarts raked it in during Bersih 3.0, though a few certainly didn’t.
On the morning of April 28, many restaurants and stalls in parts of Kuala Lumpur were suddenly beset by thousands of yellow-shirted protesters. Motivated by hunger and waiting for the Bersih 3.0 sit-in rally to start, they quickly made a beeline for these places.
Scores of people were seen in the Chinatown area, politely lining up by the roadside in a bid to grab breakfast.
Some hawkers pushed trolleys laden with ice-cold water bottles and isotonic drinks through the crowds; a god-sent in the scorching weather.
…..
It was good and brisk business for traders who chose to open that day…
…..
So what is this claim of hundreds of thousands of Ringgit that some traders supposedly lost?
If these burger-fryers showed a bit of business acumen, closed and opened their stalls at the right times, they would have walked away with something other than an alleged total loss.
But they chose not to, and decided that profits could be better made by frying for free in front of somebody’s house.

“I feel that it is insolent, an insolent act. It is not impossible that they would do it in front of my house next. Not impossible,” Samad said when asked by Malaysiakini today.
As to how he would react to a group of people wriggling their buttocks in front of his house, he said: “The reaction will not be from me, but from the public. Just go ahead

Put country before burgers: Ikhlas grilled
A business group criticises the ‘burger protest’ held outside Bersih chairperson S Ambiga’s house.
PETALING JAYA: The traders who demonstrated by selling burgers in front of Bersih chairperson S Ambiga’s house should learn to put the country’s interest first before profits.
Malaysian Indian Business Association (Miba) president P Sivakumar said as a business leader, he was disappointed that the traders had demonised Ambiga for organising the Bersih 3.0 rally.
“It’s a small sacrifice to promote better democracy in the country. The traders should know better as without sacrifice, you gain nothing,” he told FMT.
Yesterday, a petty traders group known as Ikhlas protested outside Ambiga’s house in Damansara Heights by setting up a burger stall.
Ikhlas chairperson Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah claimed that petty traders in Kuala Lumpur lost about RM200,000 in business due to the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28.
Sivakumar said the traders should learn from the younger generation of Malaysians, who were more vocal in demanding for better democracy and human rights in the country.
“As long as our youths act in accordance to the law, I don’t see an issue for them to fight for the betterment of the country,” he added.
He also said currently, the Malaysian electoral system is marred with irregularities with allegations that foreigners were given voting rights.
Sivakumar reminded the traders that even they would benefit if the electoral system in the country was free and fair.
“It is the duty of all Malaysians to demand for clean and fair election, not only Bersih and its supporters. The traders should participate in the process as well,” he said.

Global Bersih has slammed organisers of the incident outside S Ambiga’s home yesterday calling it a brazen act that would lead to “anarchy and lawlessness” if unchecked.
Commenting on the “shocking spectacle” of the anti-Bersih protest organised by hawker’s group Ikhlas outside the Bersih chairperson’s home, the international coalition said the act was a safety threat.
“There is no running away from the fact that Ikhlas, its chairperson Mohamed Ridzuan Abdullah (left in photo) and the others held the personal safety of S Ambiga, her friends and family hostage by their action.
“To call it a ‘gimmick’, as reported in the press, is to make light of a public threat to the safety of a Malaysian citizen,” said the coalition in a statement today.
Such incidents, said Global Bersih, if unchecked would pave “the road to anarchy and lawlessness” and encourage “copycat actions”.
“Ridzuan Abdullah’s threat to repeat his unlawful act is all the more shocking for its brazenness and his apparent belief that people like him can act with impunity in a country like Malaysia,” it added
It said the government and the police must be seen to be acting in the name of justice for all Malaysians, especially when such acts are being held in “full view of media and authorities”.
“If the actions of Ridzuan Abdullah and Ikhlas go unpunished, Malaysia is headed for a very, very dangerous place,” said the the coalition of Malaysian Bersih supporters living overseas.
It added that Ikhlas’ in protesting the demands for clean and fair elections has “insulted struggling Malays, Chinese, Indians and other Malaysians just like themselves”.

Bersih chief: It’s an invasion of my privacy
By Nicholas Wong | May 10, 2012
Malaysiakini

Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan today criticised Ikhlas for setting up a burger stall outside her home in protest of traders’ loss of income during the April 28 Bersih rally.
Speaking to reporters, she described the incident as an invasion of her privacy and her home, calling it a “terrible precedent” for the country.
“If the authorities accept this then ministers had better be careful, because people will be standing outside their houses next,” said Ambiga (left), adding that the she would let the public judge the situation for themselves.
While expressing concern for her family, Ambiga stressed that she was not afraid.
“Look who I have behind me,” she said, referring to the leaders of the various Bersih-affiliated NGOs standing behind her.
The leaders, which included Parti Sosialis Malaysia secretary-general S Arutchelvan, Ivy Josiah of the Women’s Aid Organisation and Bersih steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah, were called at the last minute and rushed over in a show of support for Ambiga.
“This is intimidation. I will take the necessary steps.
“This has never happened in Malaysia, except to Lim Guan Eng. Now (he) and I have had our homes violated,” she added, referring to a “funeral rite” held by.Malay rights pressure group Perkasa outside the Penang chief minister’s home earlier today
Ambiga agreed that the traders had a right to make their claims, but questioned how she was to respond to their demands as she had not been given any information on those claims. “Not even a sheet of paper has been handed to me. So what do I respond to?”
She added the traders were perfectly entitled to file their claims in court, and even sue her if they wished to. “Let the judge decide whether they have a claim.”
However, they do not have the right to come to my home and behave in such a manner, she stressed.
She said she would file a police report immediately: “I have a duty to lodge a police report… this is about the whole neighbourhood, and my family.”
The police were present in a patrol car during the incident, but did not act against any of the Ikhlas members.
