Arrhythmia: a condition in which the heart beats with an irregular or abnormal rhythm.

JUNE 19, 2020

Daily coffee may lower risk for developing arrhythmia

Regular coffee consumption is associated with a significantly lower risk for arrhythmias, according to a study presented recently as part of the Heart Rhythm Society online meeting: HRS 2020 Science.

Eun-Jeong Kim, M.D., from the University of California in San Francisco, and colleagues investigated the association between habitual caffeine consumption and the risk for arrhythmia among 357,022 participants in the U.K. Biobank.

The researchers found that during 5.25 years of follow-up, there were 8,159 incident arrhythmias diagnosed (6,999 atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, 890 supraventricular tachycardia, 459 ventricular tachycardia, and 385 premature ventricular complex). Coffee consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk for arrhythmia (hazard ratios: one to two cups, 0.90; three to four cups, 0.86; five cups or more, 0.85) compared with no consumption. Each additional daily cup of coffee was associated with a lower incidence of arrhythmia (hazard ratio, 0.96). Except for premature ventricular complexes, there was a reduction in arrhythmia incidence observed for each subtype.

“Results should reassure patients and physicians of the low risks associated with regular coffee consumption, and we hope it will encourage providers to work directly with patients to determine and personalize their specific lifestyle factors, including caffeine consumption,” Kim said in a statement.

Moderate coffee drinking may be tied to lower risk of death

For diabetes and cardiovascular disease, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee seem to have similar effects, so the benefits may be due to compounds in the coffee other than caffeine, he said.

(Reuters Health) – People who drink coffee daily, even up to four cups per day, are less likely to die from heart disease, neurological disease, type 2 diabetes or suicide than others, according to a new study.

Researchers did not test how upping coffee consumption would change health outlooks, so they cannot conclude that coffee “causes” a decreased risk of death. Rather, they looked at death trends in groups with varying amounts of coffee consumption.

“The main takeaway is that regular consumption of coffee can be incorporated into a healthy diet,” said senior author Dr. Frank Hu of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

“There is no evidence of harm of regular consumption in terms of chronic disease risk or mortality, and consistent evidence that consumption of coffee reduces the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” Hu told Reuters Health by phone.

“People who are already drinking it should continue to enjoy it, but for people who don’t drink it or don’t like it, there’s no particular reason to start for the sole reason of health,” he said.

Hu and his coauthors studied the association of coffee intake – caffeinated, decaffeinated, or both – and risk of death based on self-reported coffee habits of more than 160,000 women in the Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study 2 and 40,000 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

Every four years, participants in these studies filled out questionnaires on lifestyle factors, including how often they usually consumed caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee, ranging from never to six or more times per day.

The researchers had data on the participants from the mid-1980’s or early 1990’s through 2012. During that time, 19,524 women and 12,432 men died.

Those who reported drinking one to five cups of any type of coffee per day were less likely to have died during follow-up than those who did not drink coffee, the authors reported in Circulation.

Death from heart disease, neurological disease and suicide was less common among moderate coffee drinkers than among others, but there was no relationship with deaths from cancer, the researchers found.

DEATH BY COFFEE! A cup of coffee that killed a man!

Not to worry, coffee addicts, it’s not the usual ‘fix’ you crave for that killed him. It’s one of the banned coffees.

You would have seen these 5-in-1 coffee sachets that costs RM5 each. Where? Not on supermarket shelves but in mamak restaurants.

One ingredient highlighted is tongkat ali.

Two brands named in a newspaper report are Kopi Pahlawan and Kopi Bagus AAA. These are banned.

Man dies hours after insisting on drinking banned coffee

A MAN’S favourite traditional coffee became the cause of his death after he insisted on taking it, despite knowing that the product was a banned item in Malaysia.

Harian Metro reported that the 36-year-old man died at about 4am last Sunday after drinking the coffee that he bought from a shop in Subang for RM5.

His wife, known only as Ella, 31, said she recently read about a ban on the coffee brand and told her husband about it when he asked for his usual fix.

“He knew it was dangerous. But, he did not listen to me and forced me to make the coffee.

“Two hours later, he complained of headache, breathing difficulties and chest pain. He also vomited many times and began sweating,” she said.

Earlier that day, he had shown no sign of illness and had even taken Ella and their two children out for dinner.

Ella said that after drinking the coffee, her husband asked her to apply ointment on his chest and head but his condition worsened.

“I called for an ambulance. However, my husband was pronounced dead by the paramedics,” she said.

On Sept 4, the daily reported that 17 traditional blended coffee brands were banned by the Health Ministry for containing sildenafil and tadanafil, which are often claimed to be able to increase sexual performance.

“Improper use of these two drugs can cause headaches, a ruddy complexion, nausea, vomiting, vision disorders, abdominal pain, palpitations or erratic heartbeat and even myocardial infarction or heart attack.

“Just imagine what could happen if people with heart problems consumed coffee containing these two chemical substances. They may suffer heart failure and even death,” said Kustantinah, adding that consuming too much tadalafil and sildenafil could lead to permanent impotence.

Caffeine stirs memory

aa

A jolt of caffeine can boost memory, according to a study published Sunday that provides a scientific motive for students slurping coffee, tea or energy drinks when cramming for exams.

A team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, found that caffeine enhances certain memories for at least a day after they were formed. Evidence for caffeine as a memory booster has been anecdotal until now.

This is because the process of registering memories – say, reading a book ahead of an exam – may happen in conditions where the person is eager to absorb and retain information. This makes it hard to distinguish between someone’s natural alertness and that derived from caffeine.

The study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, could be valuable in the study of brain cell health.

“Caffeine is associated with healthy longevity and may have some protective effects from cognitive decline like Alzheimer’s disease,” said Yassa.

WHAT DOES YOUR COFFEE SAY ABOUT YOU?

If you drink it black, you’re a purist whose virtues include patience and efficiency and whose personality flaws include moodiness and inflexibility.

That’s what psychologist Ramani Durvasula, based in Los Angeles, says.

Haha, what utter rubbish as far as I’m concerned.I drink black coffee simply because the ‘milk’ is bad for my health, and for no other reason. I want to live longer, that’s all.

What if you drink it latte, white?

You tend to be comfort seekers and people pleasers who are helpful and generous with their time.

I used to drink it white, but I’m not really any of the above except for being helpful. No, I’m not generous with my time.

Anyway, read the article yourself.

What your coffee says about you

Predictably, black coffee drinkers in the survey shared the following personality traits and attitudes: They’re straightforward, no-nonsense individuals who are “old school” purists and can be moody and quiet, abrupt and dismissive. They’re also described as set in their ways and resistant to change.

In the same way latte drinkers soften the bitterness of coffee with milk and sugar, the main characteristics these people share are that they tend to be comfort seekers and people pleasers who are helpful and generous with their time. They also have a habit of overextending themselves and don’t take good care of themselves, researchers said.

Indonesian cat-poo coffee producers deny mislabelling

JAKARTA: Indonesian producers of gourmet coffee made from beans excreted by civet cats denied Friday they were routinely misleading consumers after a report said coffee from caged animals had been labelled “wild”.

The Indonesian Kopi Luwak Association also defended the practice of keeping  the weasel-like creatures in cages to make the coffee, saying it was fine as long as the end product was clearly labelled.
“Kopi Luwak” has found its way to cafes around the world in recent years,  and is one of the world’s most expensive coffees.
\
The Asian palm civets sniff out and eat top-quality coffee berries and then  defecate the fruit, giving it a rich creamy flavour.
But the BBC said it found in an investigation that some of the coffee that  appeared to be ending up on the British market labelled “wild” was in reality produced from animals in battery-cage conditions.
The coffee is among the world’s most expensive and can sell for around $800  per kilogramme (two pounds) in countries including Britain, the United States, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. –  AFP

How many cups of coffee would it take to kill you?

By | Geekquinox – Wed, Oct 31, 2012

Just last week, a lawsuit was filed against Monster Beverage Corp that claims their energy drink caused the death of a 14-year old Maryland girl. It seems that she had a preexisting medical condition known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is a group of genetic disorders related to problems with collagen, that cause loose joints, hyper-elastic skin, and — likely the most important factor in this girl’s case — easily damaged blood vessels. However, according to the autopsy report, it was apparently the cardiac arrhythmia brought on by drinking two Monster energy drinks that was the cause of death, and the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome was just an added complication.
…………….
It takes roughly 10 grams of caffeine to cause an overdose in the average adult.

To work with a truly Canadian source for illustration — according to Tim Horton’s, a 20 oz (Large) cup of their coffee has 200 mg of caffeine, so you would need to drink 50 cups to get a 10 gram dose and fast enough that all the caffeine is in your system at once. A daunting task.
……………
A 2005 report, regarding two cases of caffeine-overdose, with rather unusual circumstances, stated that it only requires only 5 grams to suffer a fatal caffeine overdose. That’s still 25 of those large cups of coffee. Of course, knowing your general health, including any medical conditions you might be suffering from — especially those that would affect the condition of your heart and circulatory system — would certainly help determine how ‘average’ you are.

Recommended:

For an average adult, more than 400gm is a bad idea. That is 20-30 sachets of the usual Nescafe 3-in-1 (20gm).

For children, the recommended limits are significantly lower, from 85 mg/day for a child 10-12 years, down to 45 mg/day for a child aged 4-6 years.

The New Most Expensive Coffee in the World

By , About.com GuideOctober 14, 2012

Look out civets, there’s a new animal processing the world’s most expensive coffee: Thai elephants.

The original ‘poo coffee’, Indonesia’s kopi luwak is produced by feeding civets — small, weasel-like animals — coffee fruit then later retrieving the beans from their droppings. Supposedly, enzymes in the digestive system break down proteins that produce bitterness in the coffee, yielding a smoother roast.

Anantara Resorts’ new Black Ivory Coffee is processed exclusively by Thai elephants and is claimed to be even better, as elephants are herbivores and know more about what they’re doing. Not to mention that much of the civet coffee sold to tourists is fake now days anyway.

While two pounds of civet coffee beans can cost around US $600, that same amount produced by Thai elephants may cost you a staggering US $1,100! A single cup can cost around US $50.

Elephant Dung Coffee: World’s Most Expensive Brew Is Made With Pooped-Out Beans

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 10/15/2012 4:00 pm Updated: 10/17/2012 3:25 am

Would you pay $1,100 for a kilogram of specialty coffee beans? What if they were pooped out by an elephant?

It may sound like the stuff of satire, but that’s exactly what’s on the menu at four Maldives resorts and one in Thailand. The Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas properties offer Black Ivory Coffee, a specialty brew made with beans digested and “naturally refined” by Thai elephants.

According to a release, the off-kilter process engenders the beans with a special quality:

Research indicates that during digestion, the enzymes of the elephant break down coffee protein. Since protein is one of the main factors responsible for bitterness in coffee, less protein means almost no bitterness.

Only about 50 kilograms of the stuff are available for purchase, and each one will cost the adventurous drinker $1,100 per kilogram. About.com figures that amounts to about $50 a cup. For comparison sake, 16 oz. of Starbuck’s House Blend retails for only $11.95 on its web site.

FROM NESCAFE 3-IN-1 TO 2-IN-1 TO 1-IN-1

I used to drink this: Nescafe 3-in1. Two cups a day to keep me working away.

However, because the creamer is not healthy (like many kinds of delicious food), I have changed to this: Nescafe 2-in-1. No creamer.

That was in late August.

Now, in late September, my supply is almost gone, and I have bought for myself a bottle of Nescafe Classic, but i didn’t buy any sugar

Yup, it’s going to be 1-in-1, pure Nescafe with no creamer and no sugar.

Why does coffee never taste as good as it smells?

For many, the scent of freshly brewed coffee is the first highlight of the day. Now, scientists claim to have solved the mystery of why it never tastes as good as it smells.

By , Science Correspondent

12:01AM BST 08 Sep 2012

For many it is the first highlight of the day, just when you need it most: the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the house first thing in the morning.

But scientists claim to have solved the mystery of why coffee never tastes as good as it smells.

The act of swallowing the drink sends a burst of aroma up the back of the nose from inside the mouth, activating a “second sense of smell” in the brain that is less receptive to the flavour, causing a completely different and less satisfying sensation.
………….
Speaking at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen Prof Barry Smith, of the University of London, said: “We have got two senses of smell.

“One sense is when you inhale things from the environment into you, and the other is when the air comes out of you up the nasal passage and is breathed out through the nose.”

The phenomenon is down to the fact that, although we have sensors on our tongue, eighty per cent of what we think of as taste actually reaches us through smell receptors in our nose.
………..
In the case of coffee, the taste is also hampered by the fact that 300 of the 631 chemicals that combine to form its complex aroma are wiped out by saliva, causing the flavour to change before we swallow it, Prof Smith added.

Why does coffee never taste as good as it smells?

Raw and naked: The coffee evolution

The Malaysian coffee scene is changing – what can we expect next?

FEATURE

The smell of roasted coffee has changed since the days of village kopitiam and moms-and-pops coffee stalls. Malaysians associated the aroma wafting through the air with kampong gossip and neighbourhood camaraderie.

In the last few years, the coffee scene has changed into one that is synonymous with lifestyle – a necessity to the work-life balance jigsaw that brought fashionable terms such as “frappucino” and “frappe” to the everyday lexicon, and furniture into the coffee shop. We may not know the difference between a Kenya from a Sumatra bean, but we know we could get our coffees large and upsized.

Now in the next wave of the local coffee revolution, we learn that coffee need not be served in 14oz plastic tumblers; so long as they are made from quality beans, the taste can be equally appreciated in smaller cups with none of the frou frou names. A flat white is just fine.

My usual blend of coffee is Nescafe 3-in-1 Regular.

Correction: was.

My usual blend of coffee WAS Nescafe 3-in-1 Regular.

However, Nescafe 3-in-1 has creamer. The creamer is hydrogenated palm kernel oil. Hydrogenated oils contain trans fats, which raise total cholesterol levels and LDL cholesterol levels, and to reduce HDL cholesterol levels. In other words, trans fatty acids are detrimental to the heart.

I switched to Nescafe Kopi-0 which is less delicious and which seems to have less caffeine. For the past two days, I have had withdrawal symptoms, namely a mild headache and a slightly jittery disposition.

Never mind. The taste buds can make the adjustment. Withdrawal symptoms should cease once the body has adjusted to the lower level of caffeine.

Herbal coffee may contain herbs and foods that provide a variety of antioxidants which help provide protection against chronic diseases.

Most of the time, these coffees are targeted at the older generation, mainly with claims of “energy” or “aphrodisiac” properties.

Of late, many instant herbal coffee makers have moved away from such marketing strategies and started positioning themselves as premium lifestyle instant coffees.

Among them is a new brand called Karaz Café which has only been in the Malaysian market for several months.

More evidence that coffee cuts skin cancer risk

More evidence that coffee, particularly among female drinkers, has a positive effect against the most common form of skin cancer worldwide was released Monday at a major US medical conference.

Women who drank more than three cups per day of caffeinated coffee saw a 20 percent lower risk of getting basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a slow-growing form of cancer, than those who drank less than a cup per month.

Men who drank the same amount saw a nine percent lower risk, said the research presented at the 10th American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research in Boston.

Read what Nescafe has to say about the benefits of coffee but bear in mind the fact that their business is SELLING COFFEE.

DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF COFFEE

Coffee and Your Mind

Many studies suggest that coffee drinking can improve overall ‘cognitive performance’, which includes important mental skills like perception, attention, memory, problem solving and reaction or response abilities. So whether you’re at the office, driving, or working night shifts, a quick coffee break will increase your brain activity and make you more alert almost immediately.

Coffee and Your Body

Upping Your Physical Performance
Caffeine promotes muscle contraction, improves neuromuscular transmission and increases peak force generation, thus increasing your capability and capacity for exercise. This means that you can keep going at a more intense pace, for a longer period and gain more from your workouts!

A healthy weight management aid
Did you know that a plain black cup of coffee contains a very small amount of calories? In fact, coffee may be able to help maintain a healthy weight! Several studies have shown that drinking coffee can increase your metabolic rate, which in turn causes fat to burn faster. This is due to the caffeine in coffee which stimulates the body’s adrenal glands to release a hormone, called catecholamine.

Coffee and Antioxidants

Research has shown that a cup of coffee naturally comes with antioxidants, which are really good for you.

Your body is constantly exposed to particles called free radicals, particles which are caused by factors like exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, environmental pollution, stress and smoking. Scientific studies suggest that free radicals can damage your body tissues, affect the ageing process and cause diseases like cataracts, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Antioxidants in your body neutralize the free radicals and protect your body cells from damage.
