PETALING JAYA (Oct 13, 2011): The Empire Shopping Gallery, which closed down after a pre-dawn explosion damaged over 40 shops and left four injured on Sept 28, will reopen in mid-November.
The scheduled date of opening comes after ongoing repairs and work at the site, which was badly damaged following the blast that was traced to a gas leak in one of the lower ground outlets.
“There are 400 workers on-site in shifts that have been carrying out a variety of tasks in different areas, and all wreckage has been cleared,” an Empire Holdings Sdn Bhd spokesman told theSun.
The spokesman said MPSJ had issued its recommendation that the Office Tower suites, SoHo block and basement parking levels P2, P3 and P4 be reopened on Oct 4, but due to upgrading work, the management has staggered the opening of the car parks.
“The focus for now is on ensuring that Empire Shopping Gallery is fully restored in a timely fashion and reopened as soon as possible, complete with upgrades undertaken under the company’s own initiative.
“We are ensuring the best interests of our tenants, to ensure that they are able to return to business in the safest environment possible and, provide an even better shopping environment for tour customers,” the spokesman said.
The blast, which occurred at around 3:30am, caused extensive damage to both the lower ground and ground floor, blowing out windows and wooden panels.
Four people – a couple and two Nepalese guards – were injured in the incident. One of the guards had suffered a broken leg after being trapped under fallen debris.
The official forensic report is underway and the estimated cost of damages is still unclear due to the ongoing investigation, the spokesman said.
