Washington Medical Commission files charges against Dr. Ryan Cole over Covid-19 related violations

Charges are being filed by Washington Medical Board against Ryan Cole.

Some of the charges are for COVID-19 misinformation. However, regardless of your opinion of COVID and vaccines, the main charges should disturb all patients.

They involve prescribing medications, as a dermatopathologist, to patients over an instant messaging platform!!! No assessment over video or phone. No examination. No follow-up. No appropriate documentation.

This falls well below the standards for virtual care and is inadequate to properly diagnose and manage a patient. This would be equivalent to asking patients to DM me their pathology pictures over Twitter and then providing them with a diagnosis.

Fact Check-2015 Nobel Prize for ivermectin intended for treatment of parasitic infections doesn’t prove its efficacy on COVID-19 | Reuters

Fact Check-2015 Nobel Prize for ivermectin intended for treatment of parasitic infections doesn’t prove its efficacy on COVID-19

By Reuters Fact Check

Correction Sep. 23, 2021: paragraph one has been corrected to clarify that the drug Ivermectin was not awarded the Nobel Prize. Rather, the prize was awarded to two scientists for their discoveries involving the drug.

Social media users claim that the drug Ivermectin is safe to use as it received the Nobel Prize in 2015. While two scientists did win the prize for the medication, this was for parasitic infections and it does not mean the drug is a safe or effective drug in the treatment of COVID-19, a virus. As of this article’s publication, public health authorities in the United States are not recommending ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19. Scientific studies are ongoing.
.

The description in one post reads: “Ivermectin has been given to humans 3.7 billion times in the past 30 years. It’s totally safe and has been called a “miracle drug.” Its creators won a Nobel Prize in Medicine for inventing it, and the WHO puts it on a list of ‘must have drugs’ for any country.”

One half of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to William C. Campbell and Satoshi Omura for “for their discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites,” according to the Nobel Prize website here .

The website says that Campbell Omura discovered that the drug Avermectin, which was chemically modified to a better compound called Ivermectin, “radically lowered” cases of river blindness, lymphatic filariasis and other parasitic diseases in humans.

“Ivermectin was later tested in humans with parasitic infections and effectively killed parasite larvae (microfilaria),” the website said. “Collectively, Ōmura and Campbell’s contributions led to the discovery of a new class of drugs with extraordinary efficacy against parasitic diseases.”
.

However, the drug is not yet approved for use in humans for preventing or treating COVID-19 and data thus far does not show efficacy against the virus.
.

VERDICT

Missing context. Two scientists did receive a Nobel Prize for their discovery of Ivermectin, but it was intended to treat parasitic infections in humans, not COVID-19.

False meme: Nobel laureate William Campbell did not say that Ivermectin ‘cures’ Covid-19

False meme: Nobel laureate did not say ivermectin ‘cures’ covid-19

Glenn Kessler

Thu, Sep 9, 20212 min read

“My name is William Campbell, in 2015 I won the Nobel Prize in medicine for the discovery of Ivermectin. It cures many diseases including covid-19. The fake news and big pharma want you to live in fear. Fauci won’t promote Ivermectin because he is the little parasite it destroys.”

– Quote attributed to Drew University professor William Campbell circulating on social media such as Twitter

This quote and image of the Nobel laureate is circulating widely on social media. Juanita Broaddrick, a prominent conservative with 500,000 followers, posted it at 11 a.m. Wednesday and within three hours accumulated more than 12,000 retweets and likes. Other Twitter users have also spread this meme widely.

But Barb Bresnahan, chief of staff and dean of administration at Drew University, where Campbell teaches, told The Fact Checker the quote is false and the meme has been reported to Twitter.

Like many fake social media posts, there’s a germ of truth, but it’s twisted into a falsehood.
.

– Campbell was quoted in April 2020 in expressing delight at an early report that the anti-parasite drug might inhibit the coronavirus. Since then, there have been continuing efforts to identify whether the relatively low-cost drug would be effective in treating patients with covid-19.

But, to date, there is insufficient evidence that ivermectin cures covid-19, even though it increasingly has been embraced by vaccine skeptics. There are numerous reports of people being hospitalized because they self-medicated with ivermectin intended for livestock.

Reposting a thread by Bad Baltic Takes on why journalist Seymour Hersh’s blog post on the US bombing the Nordstream pipeline in the Baltic is bad journalism

..

Journalist Seymour Hersh says the US bombed the Nordstream pipeline in the Baltic Sea. Let’s talk about why his blog article concluding this is really bad journalism …and he should know it.

Firstly, his article is based on a single anonymous source. Any journalist or editor knows that’s weak. You can justify publishing it as a claim in some circumstances …but Hersh’s decision to write the article as a firm conclusion based on that one source is baffling.

At no point does Hersh try to weigh up the credibility of the source or even consider the possibility that he could be getting fed misinformation from that one source. That would be journalism.

Afterall, the claim is incredible. It would be a conspiracy involving many people across countries, unlikely to remain secret. The White House went all in with its credibility to dismiss the article as “utterly false & complete fiction”, a stronger pushback than many expected.

Hersh’s new fans will dismiss White House statements, of course …just like they ridiculed White House statements that Putin was planning this full scale war, which – by the way – is the reality that Hersh has built his own timeline for this story around.

It’s also funny that his new fans are emphasising how respectable Hersh is as a Western journalist. These are the same people who spend the rest of their time emphasising how corrupt and inaccurate Western journalists are.

Hersh was a successful journalist in his younger days, but has veered down a weird conspiratorial path – all too willing to repeat theories that don’t stand up to basic journalistic scrutiny.

Most hilariously, Hersh – claiming Norway’s involvement – says Jens Stoltenberg has “cooperated with the American intelligence community since the Vietnam War”.

Stoltenberg was a teenager when the Vietnam war ended & was anti-NATO as a young man. The claim is beyond shoddy.

Hersh emphasises that Russia has no motive to attack the pipeline. This is false. You can dismiss the various theories for Russia’s involvement but you can’t credibly pretend they don’t exist. It shows a total lack of understanding of the issues on our side of the world.

Hersh himself acknowledges how the pipeline would be politically unviable during Russia’s full scale war. That means the continued existence of the pipeline is far more valuable only to someone who could replace Putin and change the course he wants Russia totally committed to.

Putin’s top priority is remaining in power at all cost. He would sacrifice an incentive to replace him & end war. An added benefit is that Russia can use the attack to sow discord – such as by briefing a false story to a credible-sounding journalist now prone to conspiracies.

The problem with conspiracy theorists isn’t necessarily that they are untrusting. It’s that they are very trusting of alternative narratives that they can’t comprehend could be constructed in detail with the intention of deceiving them.

That’s why we see so many of takes in support of Hersh saying the story must be true because it’s so detailed. The fact Hersh doesn’t consider any of this while making a firm conclusion based on one anonymous source is quite a big red flag.

In contrast to Russia’s motives, the West is committed to unity & a rules-based world order. Sabotage on their part – in place of inevitable political pressure in light of Russia’s war on Ukraine and the West – makes much less sense.

This is key here. His story isn’t credibly written, but stories about his story do count as newsworthy, especially once others pile in politically. Blogs are a convenient way to transmit shoddy stories up into the news cycle.

We Still Don’t Know How Best to Slow the Spread of COVID-19 | Time

We Still Don’t Know What Works Best to Slow the Spread Of COVID-19

By Gideon Meyerowitz-Kahn and Gavin Yamey

February 8, 2023 7:00 AM EST

Meyerowitz-Katz is an epidemiologist from the University of Wollongong, Wollongong, Australia

Yamey is a physician and professor of global health and public policy at Duke University, where he directs the Center for Policy Impact in Global Health.

Since those first, bleak days of the early pandemic, we’ve had plenty of time to reflect on the steps taken at the start of the crisis, when governments and their public health advisers were making emergency decisions armed with very little data and information on an entirely new illness. This was the era before we had developed the powerful vaccines and medicines that have transformed the outlook for COVID-19. While there is certainly evidence that these early community mitigation strategies, which scientists call “non-pharmaceutical interventions” (NPIs), reduced the spread of the virus, what might surprise you is how little effort there has been to fully assess their impact.

Because of a lack of research on NPIs, we still can’t answer important questions like: which government measures had the greatest and the least impact? How did the sequencing and timing of these NPIs affect their effectiveness? Which measures caused more harm than benefit? We need answers to these questions so we can prepare for the next pandemic, armed with better knowledge.

When it comes to NPIs, every angry person online has a strong belief that if only we had spent more time promoting mask wearing, been more like Sweden with its government-sponsored healthcare and incredibly generous paid sick leave provisions, or done something, anything, better than we did, we could have averted the mass death, disability, and orphanhood that COVID-19 caused. However, given the lack of data, it’s remarkably hard to know exactly how we could have used NPIs more effectively.

Our new piece in @TIME looks at the many unanswered questions of COVID-19, and how it often feels like we still don’t have much information about the best way to deal with pandemics

The main thing here is that everyone and their mother has a strong, certain opinion on everything from school closures to workplace signage, but the reality is that we really don’t know much about the trade-offs for any of these things

Some people say every lockdown was murder, some say we should’ve gone harder, but either way it’s more opinion than fact And that’s quite a big problem

Also, forgot to tag @GYamey, my brilliant co-author!
