I guess he's hoping to return to a past where Chinese were slaves to Malays eh https://t.co/nMxjN5ZnZm

Well, look at that. The rickshaw puller is indeed Chinese. But the man lording it over him? Indian. Ah, the dangers of a single story (for which we all fell: those of us who liked the story and those of us who didn't). Race, class, & power have always been complex in our region. https://t.co/Z0SWjPXjha

Published between 1895-1910 by August E. Kaulfuss (1861-1908), colonial images like this was made by colonisers. They were the ones who had access and control over the camera. It is often made to portray the exotic orient by way of staging and with no consent from the subjects.

There is nothing wrong with being a rickshaw puller – there were Malay, Chinese & Indian pullers in the country in those days. Income was halal & it provided a good service to many. P. Ramlee even did a movie about it which I think is one of his best movies. pic.twitter.com/nwf0hceu8L

If anything, it showed how diversity & unity were already part of Malaya's social fabric. Unlike today, we have politicians tear this country with their racism.

Malays were commoners too, cos there are royalty. Chi+Indian labourers were brought into Malaya en masse by colonising Brits to literally build the nation so they can plunder her resources. the migrants started building lives here too; called "coolies", but rly indentured slaves

Ironic because dude really believes he is on the rickshaw when the truth is his ancestors were in the same class as the Chinese chap. My ancestors were farmers. I have nothing but contempt for the rich chap.
