KANGAR, May 24 ― Police on Tuesday detained a man believed to be the main suspect in the torching of Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin’s car in March.

Perlis Police Chief Datuk Noor Mushar Mohamad said the 36-year-old suspect was nabbed at his home here.

Police are now looking for a man, known as “Mie Tomoi”, suspected of also being involved in the incident.

“We have in custody five people so far, all of whom are under remand,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Noor Mushar said early investigations revealed that two of the suspects were also involved in assault of Perlis Islamic Religious Affairs Department Director Dr Hazman Hassan last September.

PETALING JAYA: PAS’ Jabatan Amal Malaysia (JAM) are crying foul over the detention of three of its members to assist with investigations into the torching of the official vehicle of Perlis Mufti, Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

JAM director-general Mohd Nazree Mohd Aris said the three members were detained for questioning on Monday (May 20), based on a claim made by a drug addict who was detained during a recent narcotics raid.

“The two prime suspects of the torching incident (on March 22) were caught on CCTV. One of them is the drug addict, and another is a man named Mie Tomoi, who is still at large. However, none of our members were in the frame,” said Mohd Nazree.

“Instead of going after the prime suspects, our members, who have no police record, were hauled up for questioning,” he added.

“We believe the truth will prevail. Our members are into helping people; not causing harm to anyone. We do not even badmouth Pakatan Harapan. Why would any of our members torch a mufti’s car?” he said.

Mohd Nazree said that JAM has no problem assisting the police, as it is not in the wrong.

“We believe the truth will prevail. Our members are into helping people; not causing harm to anyone. We do not even badmouth Pakatan Harapan. Why would any of our members torch a mufti’s car?” he said.

Mohd Nazri said the three JAM volunteers have been remanded for four days, since Monday.

“One of our JAM members lodged a police report, questioning how two Facebook account holders got the name and photograph of a person detained for questioning.

“Soon after lodging the report in Kota Setar, Kedah, our member went to the Perlis headquarters to give his statement, and he was detained there.

“One member was detained at home, and two others were detained when they were called in for questioning,” he said.

Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has apologised over images of arson suspects together with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that were uploaded onto his Facebook page by an administrator.

The implicated persons are suspected to have torched the mufti’s vehicle in front of his house in March.

In a separate Facebook post today, Asri said that just because the suspects appeared in these images with certain leaders, it does not mean that said leaders agreed with their actions.

“This is particularly true in a time where people are obsessed with taking pictures with leaders and famous individuals.

“If it has been proven that a person’s actions were based on the suggestion or incitement of a leader, only then can the leader be implicated,” he said.

Asri acknowledged that the images gave a negative perception of Hadi, and admitted that it should not have happened.

“Therefore, representing this (Facebook) page, I would like to apologise if the wrong perception had been created before the conclusion of the police investigation.

“We want to wait for the police’s official statement.

“Personally, I trust that the PAS president, with his position, would not make such a heinous order (to torch my car). Other quarters need to be investigated,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: An officer of Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin today took PAS to task after the circulation of several pictures linking two members of the Islamist party’s volunteer group to the recent torching of the mufti’s car.

The administrator of Asri’s Facebook account posted several pictures of individuals whom it claimed were from PAS’ Unit Amal, saying “reports” had suggested their involvement in the March 22 incident.

“It is true that Asri sometimes expresses views different from those in PAS,” the post said.

“The question is, if they do not agree, do they justify the destruction of property and harm to those with differing views?

“Why not just organise a scholarly debate between Asri’s views and those of PAS on the issue of Muslims calling each other infidels?”

The administrator also voiced hope that Muslims do not resort to such actions simply because others have differing political views.

Ketua pengarahnya, Mohd Nazree Mohd Aris, ketika dihubungi Malaysiakini berkata anggota terlibat ditahan reman empat hari mulai semalam.

Police have detained the suspect who was believed to have set the official car of Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin on fire on March 22.

Perlis police chief Noor Mushar Mohamad said the unemployed suspect, 36, was detained at his home in Kampung Jelempok, Arau, at 2.45am on Saturday.

“The suspect confessed that he carried out the act with a friend who is still at large, ‘Mie Tomoi,’ for payment of RM500, after he was paid to do so by another person,” he said when contacted today.

Noor Mushar said the suspect also revealed that five more persons were also involved, three of whom have been identified and will be arrested soon.

Police also seized the suspect’s handphone and said he has five previous offences and was sentenced twice.

According to Noor Mushar, the suspect said that several days later, Mie Tomoi took him to meet three other persons on a mission to cause harm to the mufti.

“One of them was believed to have offered to pay a large amount of money to the suspect and the friend to splash acid on Asri’s face, but they did not agree to it.

“However, Mie Tomoi and the suspect agreed to set Asri’s car on fire for a sum of money.

“Several days later, the friend arrived at the suspect’s house on a motorcycle and later went in his Proton Waja car to a house in Titi Tok Bandar, Kangar,” he said.

Noor Mushar added that another suspect, known as “Dik E”, handed the two a backpack, jacket, plastic bottles and helmets, and they then rode Mie Tomoi’s motorcycle to a petrol station in Kodiang, Kedah where they filled the plastic bottles with petrol, before heading to the mufti’s house.

He said Mie Tomoi splashed petrol on the mufti’s car and the suspect lit a fire and smashed the rear windshield with a rod.

After the job was done, the duo returned home after they burnt the items they had used, he said.

“Several days later, the suspect met a person at a convenience store in Kangar and asked for a payment of RM5,000. However, the person only paid him RM500,” Noor Mushar said.

He added that the suspect was remanded at the Kangar Court yesterday for four days, and police have identified three of the five persons involved in the case, and will arrest them soon.
