LAWYER and activist Siti Kasim has been freed from the Kajang police headquarters a day after police barged into her home and arrested her on suspicion of abducting her client and obstruction of a government servant’s duties.

After spending a night in lock-up, Siti was handcuffed and taken to the Kajang magistrates’ court earlier today as authorities sought a remand order.

After outcry, home minister says IGP to present full report on Siti Kasim’s arrest

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has ordered Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun to prepare a comprehensive report on the arrest of lawyer Siti Kasim.

Muhyiddin said he was fully aware of the incident and the law involved.

He added that a proper report was necessary before he could act or comment on the matter at hand.

“To that end, I have today called upon the inspector general of police to issue a comprehensive report to me before taking any action in the matter,” he said in a statement.

“In the meantime, I note that the application by the police to remand lawyer Siti Kasim was not granted by the Court yesterday.

“Consistent with the doctrine of separation of powers, the Court’s role to adjudicate the merits of the application by the police, and to balance them against the fundamental liberties enshrined under the Constitution must be respected by all parties concerned,” he added.

Siti was arrested early yesterday for allegedly obstructing a civil servant on duty.

After Siti Kasim’s arrest, Suhakam says concerned over Jais’ hold over cops

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — The Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) said today it was concerned about the hold that Islamic religious authorities appeared to have over the police force, after yesterday’s episode involving lawyer Siti Kasim and her client.

Suhakam today accused the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) of influencing the police, which it said may result in public apprehension over religious policing in Malaysia.

“Suhakam is equally concerned that the rights of Siti Kasim’s client, an adult were not fully taken into account, and that religious enforcement bodies, in this case Jais has been able to influence the police without the police sufficiently determining the facts beforehand, that can lead to a situation where people will be apprehensive that there is religious policing in the country,” it said in a statement here.

Lawyer and activist Siti Kasim has been arrested by police for kidnapping and obstruction a public servant from carrying out his duties. The arrest, which was broadcasted on Facebook live, is reportedly in regards to one of her clients. Siti is reportedly accused of forcibly locking up her client, a woman, at her home. In a Facebook posting on Thursday, Siti claimed her client had been “abducted” by the Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) and police, after reports were lodged by the client’s mother claiming the client was mentally unstable and that her “faith was in question.” The woman is said to have moved out of her parents house to escape a “controlling” mother.

Absolutely disgusting! Shame on you & . The policewoman is clearly heard saying “kita tak buat siasatan lagi” when asked who is the IO. Why arrest her when you haven’t started investigations? An obvious vexatious arrest. You better look into this .
