KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to return the two awards he received from the Selangor Palace can be seen as a further insult, said Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed…

“It was given to him, it’s not like he asked for it. If he returned them, it can be seen as an insult (to the honour) and to those awards,” said the Deputy Home Minister.

Nur Jazlan was speaking a press conference for the Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam)’s upcoming annual general meeting at its headquarters here Thursday.

When reporters suggested that he had returned the awards because he had incurred the Palace’s anger, Nur Jazlan said: “Itu bukan adat orang Melayu (that’s not Malay culture)”.

Dr Mahathir first politician to return royal awards

IN Malaysia, where many a politician is a recipient of royal awards, few may have had their awards taken back but none has willingly surrendered a title.

Other than Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, that is.
.

The Malaysian Insight takes a look at several politicians who have had their titles revoked.

* In December 2010, Gua Mustang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah was stripped of two Kelantan awards given to him by the Kelantan ruler Sultan Muhammad V Tuanku Faris Petra Sultan Ismail Petra.
.
* In the same year, Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali also saw his datukship revoked by the Kelantan palace.

No reason was given for the revocation but Ibrahim, who was an independent Pasir Mas MP, had at the time issued statements that were deemed racist.
.

* In 2010, former health minister Chua Jui Meng had two datukships revoked by the Johor palace.

Chua, a former MCA vice-president, left the party and joined the opposition PKR a year earlier and was serving as a central committee member when the award was revoked.

* In 2011, former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo was stripped of the “Datuk Seri” title when he was charged with graft.
.

* In 2014, the Selangor palace also stripped jailed politician and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim of the “Datuk Seri” title conferred to him in 1992 because he had “repeatedly questioned the integrity of the sultan in dealing with the Selangor menteri besar crisis, and also questioned other issues pertaining to Islam”.

The menteri besar then had been Khalid Ibrahim who was removed by his then party PKR and replaced with Mohamed Azmin Ali. – December 13, 2017.

‘Awards are given, awards can be returned’

zzzzzzz.jpg

PETALING JAYA: Marina Mahathir today expressed support for her parents’ decision to return their royal awards to the Selangor palace, saying it was their choice.

“Awards are given, awards can be returned,” she told FMT, adding that she “absolutely” agreed with their decision.

She said however that she had no reason to return her own Datuk Paduka Mahkota Selangor award, which she received from the Selangor sultan in 1999.

“I do not have any quarrel with the sultan of Selangor. So there is no reason (to return the award) unless he demands it. It was his father that gave it to me.”

Zaid: No longer tenable for Mahathir to keep Selangor royal awards

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to return awards presented to him by the Selangor palace was the honourable thing to do, says former minister Zaid Ibrahim.
.
“When the sultan took the unprecedented step to publicly declare him undesirable, it was no longer tenable for Tun to keep the titles bestowed on him,” Zaid, who himself has been publicly criticised by the Selangor sultan over Twitter postings in defence of Mahathir, told FMT today.

“It’s the only honourable thing for him to do.”

The sultan first criticised Mahathir following the latter’s speech during Pakatan Harapan’s “anti-kleptocracy” rally in October, in which he referred to Prime Minister Najib Razak as a “descendant of Bugis pirates”.

The Selangor royal household are descendants of the Bugis ethnic group.

Mahathir has maintained that his remarks were only against Najib and not directed at the Bugis community.

The Selangor sultan further criticised and condemned Mahathir in separate interviews published by The Star and Utusan Malaysia.

Dr Siti Hasmah also returns Selangor royal awards

FOLLOWING her husband Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali has also returned two royal awards to the Selangor Palace, said a spokesperson from the former prime minister’s office.

The source told The Malaysian Insight that the two awards were returned last Thursday.
.

Dr Siti Hasmah was awarded the DPMS by the Selangor palace in 1983 and the SPMS in 1994.

The SPMS, or Darjah Kebesaran Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor Darjah Kelas Pertama, carries the title of “Datuk Seri” and is awarded to only two persons at any one time, with a maximum of 40 living recipients.

The DPMS, or Dato Paduka Mahkota Selangor, carries the title of “Datuk Paduka” or “Datin Paduka” for women.

The Selangor Palace told The Malaysian Insight that it would issue a statement on the matter tomorrow.

Dr Mahathir returns Selangor royal awards

DR Mahathir Mohamad has returned two medals he had received from the sultan of Selangor, including the highest order awarded by the state, sources said.

Both medals were returned last Thursday. They were handed over to a senior officer at the office of the sultan of Selangor at Istana Bukit Kayangan in Shah Alam, a source told The Malaysian Insight.

“The reason is clear,” said another source when asked why the former prime minister-turned-opposition leader returned the medals. He did not elaborate.

The Malaysian Insight has attempted to obtain confirmation from the sultan’s private secretary, Mohamad Munir Bani, but at the time of publication, he has not replied to messages sent via WhatsApp.

The Malaysian Insight has also contacted Dr Mahathir’s office and is waiting for a response.

It has been reported that the Selangor ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, was outraged at Dr Mahathir’s insult of the Bugis community.

During the “Love Malaysia, end kleptocracy” rally in Petaling Jaya on October 14, Dr Mahathir slammed Prime Minister Najib Razak as a descendent of a “Bugis pirate”.

The Selangor royal court on November 2 released a statement saying that the sultan was enraged and disappointed with Dr Mahathir’s speech, urging the police to investigate the Pakatan Harapan chairman for allegedly inciting hatred towards the Bugis.
