At last, Fleeing Habib Rizieq Will Not Return to Indonesia Soon
The recent banning of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) had caused speculations that FPI and other hard-line organizations may also face the same fate if they violate the recently issued special government regulation on radicalism.
Jakarta, GIVnews.com – Notorius cleric Rizieq Shihab will not return to Indonesia this coming week to celebrate the 19th anniversary of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI), a hard-line organization he founded and now heads. FPI’s anniversary falls on 17 August 2017, which is also Indonesia’s Independence Day.
Rizieq, who is a suspect in a pornography case, may return home from the Middle East only after 1 September, his lawyer said last Friday. “Very possibly, Habib (Rizieq) will not return home (this mid-August). He may do it after Lebaran Haji,” Rizieq’s lawyer Sugito Atmo Prawiro told reporters in Jakarta as reported by Liputan6.com. Lebaran Haji, or the Haj holiday, is the Muslim day of sacrifice.
Reportedly, Rizieq, whose ancestors were originated from Yemen, is now in Saudi Arabia. He and his family left Indonesia to the Holy Land late April for a month-long ‘umroh’ pilgrimage. Meanwhile, the Jakarta police had in May of this year put Rizieq in their wanted list after he ignored their summons to question him in a pornography case.
The police had sent a strong signal for an immediate arrest after his arrival in Indonesia. This was despite the repeated requests from the cleric and other FPI leaders that his case be closed because it is legally groundless.
Previously, in response to the police summons, Rizieq and other FPI leaders had repetitively said he would return to Indonesia shortly before 17 August. But, few people including police investigators had believed it with some calling him a ‘coward’.
Rizieq’s case also involved a female social activist who had been questioned and declared a suspect.
Rizieq, whose rhetoric style captivated audiences, played a leading role in the mobilization of huge street rallies late last year and early 2017, which were aimed to topple then Jakarta Governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama who was then seeking reelection.
Their actions allegedly forced court judges to sentence the Christian and ethnic Chinese Ahok to two years in jail for blaspheming Islam and the Quran. Ahok’s political opponents were said to support the ‘anti-Ahok’ street rallies and other related violent actions.
Meanwhile, their ‘success’ to block Ahok’s reelection and push for his imprisonment had brought Rizieq and other radical group leaders to a bigger fame.
Meanwhile, there are now fears that the political opponents of President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo may use those radical groups to obstruct his reelection in 2019. Jokowi was Ahok’s close ally and had allegedly protected the latter from political attacks so as to secure the governor’s reelection in April of this year.
In addition to Rizieq’s pornography case, several parties had submitted to the police their complaints about his alleged blasphemous conduct and other law breaching actions.
The recent dissolution by President Jokowi of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) had caused speculations that FPI and other hard-line organizations could also be dissolved if they violate the recently issued government regulation on radicalism. The regulation is called Perppu (Government Regulation in Lieu of Law) No. 2 Year 2017. HTI allegedly aspired to turn the pluralist Indonesia into an Islamic state.

Jakarta teenager abused by FPI members for posting memes about Rizieq Shihab, two arrested

Indonesia observed Pancasila Day yesterday, a day that celebrates the nation’s ideological principles, including the unity of its peoples regardless of race and religion. But the word that dominated local media was not pluralism but persekusi (persecution).
A disturbing video depicting a 15-year-old Jakartan of Chinese descent being physically harassed and threatened by people claiming to be members of the hardline group Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) went viral yesterday, drawing widespread condemnation of the FPI for allegedly abusing a minor.
In the video, a group of men are seen coercing the teen – who has his mother sitting right behind him – into apologizing for posting memes about FPI leader Rizieq Shihab that they said were insulting to Muslims. The men surrounded the teen, mocking, laughing and occasionally slapping and punching him, knocking the glasses off of his face at one point.
One man, who appeared to be the leader of the group, told the boy that he had insulted the Muslim community as Rizieq is not just the leader of the FPI, but a grand Imam for “millions of Muslims”. He warned the boy to tell his friends of the same ethnicity not to make fun of Rizieq and other Islamic scholars or they may face the same consequences.
The teen appeared shaken but stayed calm while enduring the mental and physical abuse from the group.
.
After the video went viral yesterday, police swiftly arrested two FPI members suspected of being present during the incident, though the extent of their involvement in the abuse is not yet known.
“Two people were detained. M and U (the initials of the suspects) were taken to Jakarta Metro Police headquarters. M admitted that they intimidated the boy. He is FPI, so is the other one,” said East Jakarta Police Chief Andry Wibowo, as quoted by Merdeka.

Indonesian hardliner protests Playboy evidence
Monday, 08 September 2008
An Indonesian Islamic hardliner on trial over an armed attack on a rally for religious tolerance objected Monday when a police officer introduced seized copies of Playboy magazine as evidence.
Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab said the magazines had no connection with his trial.
He is accused of being behind the June attack by hundreds of his stick-wielding followers.
“It has nothing to do with the case. Why should it be used here?” Rizieq, wearing a turban, told central Jakarta district court.
“It’s about my reputation. The prosecutors have tarnished my good reputation.”
The police officer testified for the prosecution that he seized the magazines and a photograph during raids on Rizieq’s home and the Jakarta headquarters of the FPI.
Videos of the attack and of Rizieq’s sermons were also seized, the policeman said.
Rizieq said the seized photograph featured a Miss Indonesia contestant, and the magazines were in his office as part of his archives.
“We reject those things as evidence in court,” he said, arguing that the FPI has been “in war against pornography” for 10 years and was responsible for a previous court case against Playboy.
An Indonesian court threw out on a technicality an indecency case against the local editor of Playboy magazine in 2007. The Indonesian version of the magazine did not publish any nudes but it angered hardliners who saw it as a corrupting influence in society.

INDONESIA: Police to question FPI over attack on ‘Playboy’ office
Police say Islam Defenders Front must answer for attack
Jakarta Post
Saturday, April 15, 2006
Jakarta — Police plan to question Monday a member of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) over Wednesday’s attack on the building housing the editorial office of Playboy Indonesia in South Jakarta.
A spokesman for the South Jakarta Police, Comr. Suyudi Arioseto, said the police would summon the rally coordinator to begin their investigation underway. He refused to name the coordinator.
“We have video footage of the incident and of course we can identify those who were involved in the attack,” Suyudi told the Jakarta Post.
The police decision to take action followed Wednesday’s attack, in which protesters pelted the office building with rocks, shattering windows on the ground and lower floors and injuring two policemen. The office of the magazine, on the fourth floor, was not damaged.
They returned Thursday, but were told the magazine had moved to a new location.
Radical Muslims have been angered by the April 5 first edition of Playboy Indonesia, although the publisher kept to an earlier promise not to feature nude pictorials or the soft-core content of the U.S. magazine.
The police have also asked Playboy to suspend publication due to “fierce public rejection”, or print outside of Jakarta. They also plan to seek opinions from various figures on whether the content can be considered pornographic.
They also plan to review the content of other erotic men’s tabloids and magazines. Under the Indonesian legal system, the media are legal because unlike during the authoritarian Soeharto regime, they are not required to have government licenses.

Rizieq now on police’s wanted list – Jakarta Post
.
The Jakarta Police have officially put the name of Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader and firebrand cleric Rizieq Shihab on their wanted list.
Rizieq is currently being hunted by the police after he was named a suspect in a pornography case after a steamy WhatsApp chat, allegedly with Firza Husein, who has also been named a suspect.
“The development of Rizieq’s case is that the police have issued a wanted list with his name,” said the police’s spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.
He further explained that the measure was taken after the police delivered a letter of arrest to Rizieq’s house and coordinated with the Immigration Office regarding the suspect’s current whereabouts, he is reportedly in Saudi Arabia.
“Apparently, on May 26, he was still abroad and has yet to return to Indonesia,” said Argo. “Based on that, the investigators have added him to the wanted list.”

“Set a good example and return home,” Istiqlal grand imam urges Rizieq
.
The grand imam of Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque, a progressive Muslim thinker named Nasaruddin Umar, is urging the leader of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI), Rizieq Shihab, to set a good example as an ulema and return home to Indonesia to face his legal case.
“He is an ulema. As an ulema, he should set a good example,” he said at the State Palace on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.
“It will be elegant to face something with resignation. I believe he will not lose his followers.”
Especially, he said, by returning home to undergo his legal process, Rizieq would also show that he was a good citizen.
Nasaruddin also called for Rizieq’s followers to remain calm in responding to the case implicating the firebrand cleric in scandal.
The Jakarta Police had named Rizieq a suspect on Monday in a pornography case related to an allegedly steamy chat with Firza Husein, who had earlier been named a suspect in the same case.

Indonesian Islamist leader named suspect in pornography case
.
JAKARTA: Indonesian police on Monday named an Islamist leader as a suspect in the exchange of pornographic messages and photos, a new legal threat to a cleric who helped organise mass Muslim rallies against Jakarta’s former Christian governor.
Habib Rizieq, a firebrand cleric who heads the hardline Islamic Defenders Forum (FPI), has also been made a suspect in a separate investigation over allegations he insulted the secular state ideology in the Muslim-majority nation.
President Joko Widodo appears to be taking a tougher stance against fundamentalism and has said he would not tolerate any individuals or organisations that undermine the secular state ideology “Pancasila”, or threaten Indonesia’s tradition of pluralism.
Religious and political tensions have soared in the last six months with Islamist-led rallies targeting the Jakarta governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese Christian who was jailed this month for insulting the Koran.
The government recently moved to disband Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamist group that calls for a state based on sharia and also backed the protests against Purnama, an ally of Widodo.
Rizieq, who has spent years preaching conservative Islamic values, is accused of violating Indonesia’s strict anti-pornography laws by exchanging graphic messages and nude pictures with a woman.
Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono confirmed Rizieq had been made a suspect, meaning the case is likely to go to court.
“The main crime is participating in and transmitting pornographic content,” Yuwono said in a telephone text message.
Rizieq’s lawyer, Sugitmo Atmo Pawiro, denied the allegations, saying they had been fabricated by supporters of Purnama.
Rizieq is currently overseas after flying to Malaysia and then to Saudi Arabia. He has not returned to Indonesia despite repeated summons for questioning by police.

Sunday, 21 May 2017

Is FPI’s Rizieq Shihab a threat?

The leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), Habib Rizieq (right).
Should Malaysians be worried that the controversial Indonesian cleric appears to have spent time here recently?
THERE’S no escaping the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) when discussing Indonesian politics.
On Monday, I had breakfast with Indonesian Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch at Shaaz Curry House in Bandar Sunway.
We were chatting about Ahok (the nickname of jailed Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama), blasphemy, a pornography case involving a firebrand Indonesian and the rise of radical Islamism, and inevitably, FPI was mentioned.
For those not familiar with FPI, which was founded by firebrand cleric Rizieq Shihab (pic) in 1998, here’s its curriculum vitae.
> FPI is the face of hardline Islam in Indonesia;
> FPI raided bars selling alcohol during Ramadan;
> FPI protested against the Miss World beauty pageant in Indonesia;
> FPI forced the cancellation of “devil’s messenger” Lady Gaga’s concert; and
> FPI organised mass rallies against Ahok for allegedly insulting Islam.
.
There are reports that Rizieq and some members of his family flew in from Saudi Arabia to Kuala Lumpur International Airport on May 5. And he left with Zakir Naik for Saudi Arabia on May 13.
The 52-year-old firebrand is familiar with Malaysia. In 2008, he earned a Masters degree in Syariah law from the International Islamic University Malaysia in Nilai, Negri Sembilan. In 2012, he was admitted to a Dakwah and Management programme at the same university.
Rizieq is believed to have been invited by a Malaysian political party to share his experience and opinion on Indonesian politics, especially on how the Islamism movement brought down Ahok.
“They will use the playbook FPI used against Ahok in Malaysia,” a political observer familiar with Malaysian and Indonesian politics told me.
.
“If someone powerful and once popular like Ahok could be jailed for blasphemy, who is next?”
Andreas warned that this could happen in Malaysia.
“But why do Malaysians need to worry that Rizieq is advising Malaysian politicians?” I repeated.
“Because he is smart, having effective rhetoric. He knows how to play politics and to use Islamic rhetoric,” he said.

Facial recognition analysis confirms identity of naked woman in sex chat with Indonesian Islamic leader
.

JAKARTA – The Indonesian National Police has said that a facial recognition analysis has confirmed that a naked woman who appeared in sex chats allegedly involving Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab is female activist Firza Husein.
Hery Cahyono, a face recognition expert from the police’s Indonesia Automatic Fingerprints Identification System (Inafis) division, said the authorities used several methods, including biometrics, to check whether the woman who appeared in the sex chats was really Firza.
He said the police compared pictures of the female activist when she was arrested over an alleged plot against the government on Feb 4 with her suspected pictures in the WhatsApp conversation.
Hery said the team also used a bio-finder method, during which they checked Ms Firza’s naked pictures in the WhatsApp conversations and her pictures on her ID card and in the Home Ministry’s e-ID database.
“The automatic algorithm system shows that all those pictures match. The system would refuse to (report a match) if the pictures were from two different people,” Hery said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.

Woman charged for allegedly sharing porn with firebrand cleric in WhatsApp
The Jakarta Police have named Firza Husein, the coordinator of the Solidaritas Sahabat Cendana Foundation (SSC) and treason suspect, a suspect in a separate pornography case.
Investigators have charged her under the 2008 Pornography Law, which carries a maximum sentence of six years’ imprisonment, for allegedly sharing pornographic material in WhatsApp chats between her and firebrand cleric Rizieq Shihab.
Firza was named a suspect after undergoing 12 hours of questioning at the office of the Jakarta Police’s special crimes unit on Tuesday.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said the police had obtained enough evidence to name Firza a suspect.
“We have evidence consisting of a police report, statements from regular and expert witnesses and of course physical evidence,” Argo said after the questioning session.
Investigators of the National Police’s Indonesia Automatic Fingerprints Identification System (INAFIS) confirmed on Monday that nude pictures posted in a WhatsApp chat belonged to Firza.
“Tomorrow [Wednesday], we will question her again as a suspect,” said Argo.
Meanwhile, investigators have yet to question Rizieq, who failed to fulfil two summons to be questioned as a witness in the case.
The police said on Tuesday that Rizieq was located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
