More Chinese (52pct) are MBPP’s ‘victims’, statistics show

Susan Loone

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has issued statistics to dispute claims that its officers practised racial discrimination during raids on illegal businesses or demolition of unlawful structures.

According to the figures provided by MBPP, its officers have carried out enforcement on 305 individuals from Jan to April this year.

Based on overall racial breakdown, MBPP had acted against 103 Malays (34 percent), 158 Chinese (52 percent), 31 Indians (10 percent) and 13 others (four percent).

Action was taken against 109 illegal traders, 53 Malays, Chinese (40), Indians (14) and others (two), the MBPP said.

MBPP officers acted on dirty premises involving three Malays, Chinese (seven), Indian (one) and others (none).

They demolished illegal structures involving five Malays, Chinese (26), Indian (one) and others (none).

The statistics showed that MBPP also took action on illegal barriers put up by 41 Malays, Chinese (76), Indian (15), and others (11).

The council also acted on illegal hotels involving one Malay and five Chinese, and four Chinese entertainment outlets.

No racism in raids on illegal traders, says Penang city council

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has strongly denied that its officers practised racism during raids on illegal traders.

MBPP secretary Yew Tung Siang said council officers were professionally trained and were merely carrying out instructions to weed out illegal businesses.

Yew said traders, regardless of race or religion, would have to face the law if they operated without business licences.

“No such thing as racism. We take action regardless of race. Anyone who breaks the law has to face the music,” he told Malaysiakini today.

Yew said MBPP would be providing statistics, which will prove that action taken on illegal traders had nothing to do with racial discrimination.

He was responding to an incident last night when two traders drove off with an MBPP lorry during a raid in Tanjong Tokong.
.
In a video clip that has gone viral in social media, Mohammad Haziq, 27, and another individual were heard spewing expletives at the MBPP officers.

The duo condemned the officers as being racists, using words such as “p*****k apa hangpa (kamu) nak gagau. Lori hangpa kena gagau, lori MBPP”.

The officers were slammed for disturbing Malay businesses by seizing their chairs and tables.

P ***** k punya Guan Eng, kedai Cina, p**** kau tak halau, kedai Melayu kau nak halau,” said one of the men who drove away with the lorry.

He added: “Rekod live, aku curi lori MBPP. Untuk satu tempat hangpa curi RM10,000 peniaga Melayu, hang ingat (kami) bodoh”.

Police arrest duo in Penang lorry hijack

GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested the two men who hijacked a Penang Island City Council lorry outside their seafood stall at Jalan Tanjung Tokong last night.

Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the two men, aged 28 and 34, were detained shortly after they arrived at the Pulau Tikus police station.

He said they would be investigated for using criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under the Penal Code.

He added that the case was “solved”, but did not say when the men would be brought to court.

GEORGE TOWN: Two seafood stall workers turned the tables on raiding city council officers after they made their way with a council lorry ready to seize items from their illegal stall close to the Gurney Drive area here last night.

In the 8.50pm incident, two men who are believed to be workers at the seafood stall at Jalan Tanjung Tokong got into a heated argument with about a dozen  Penang Island City Council officers who had arrived in a lorry.

The council enforcement officers had wanted to seize their items as they were not licensed and were operating illegally.

The two workers in their 20s then rushed into the city council lorry which had its engine running and drove off.

They then drove for about 2km to the Pulau Tikus police station, with the co-driver filming the entire trip for about 3 minutes.
.

They were tailed by council officers on motorcycles, asking them to stop, but they did not.

The two men then parked the lorry at the entrance of the Pulau Tikus police station and lodged a report against the city council for harassing them and their business.

In a police report sighted, a 27-year-old worker from the seafood stall claimed the city council officers were rude and had come unannounced.

The man said he had applied for a city council licence thrice but was yet to be issued one.

He said he then “bertindak” (acted) to drive the city council lorry away, in an attempt to stop the council officers from seizing items from their business.

“I am lodging this report because I am unhappy with the way that the city council treats Bumiputera Malays,” he said.
