BATU KURAU: The police are currently investigating the misuse of words on a banner supposedly congratulating Sultan Muhammad V on his coronation as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, at the MCA Taiping building.

Acting Perak police chief Hasnan Hassan said although the owner of the banner had corrected the mistake, the police would still continue with its investigation to identify whether the error was deliberate.

“If it was purposely done, then the case is gravely serious as it is a threat to the security of the people,” he said in a press conference during the launching ceremony of the Batu Kurau police station at the Taiping police headquarters here today.

According to Hasnan, the police have recorded the statements of several individuals to facilitate the investigation, and statements from certain important people will be taken once they return from overseas.

Taiping MCA has apologised over the gross mistake in the banner the party put up in conjunction with the installation of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V at its premises.

The banner, which misspelled the word “pertabalan” (installation) of His Majesty as “perbatalan” (cancellation), was taken down this morning, one week after it went up.

“We must apologise to His Majesty for the error which we had overlooked. We are loyal to His Majesty and the country,” Taiping MCA division chief Ang Sui Eng told Malaysiakini.

She said the mistake happened because they did not double check the spelling thoroughly as they were too busy and there were many words on the banner.
.

“Of course, we would not want to pin the responsibility on others and will not blame the advertisement agency (over the mistake),” she added.

Ang however expressed her displeasure on those who noticed the mistake but chose to spread it via WhatsApp, instead of informing them to correct the mistake.

“This is something regrettable,” she lamented.

“We have received a call from the police special branch, (and we told them) that we are loyal to His Majesty. We are the only one who put up a banner to celebrate the installation of His Majesty. Why not talk about our loyalty ?

“Definitely we have no intention of toppling the ruler,” she added.
