Presma: No increase of food prices in ‘mamak’ restaurant
‘Mamak’ shops under the affiliation of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Restaurants Owners Association (Presma), are still maintaining prices of their food for the past two years and have not raised them as alleged.
Presma president Ayoob Khan Muhammad Yakub said in fact, Presma was planning to introduce a discount card to ease the burden of consumers.
“The card gives a 25 percent discount to the handicapped, 10 percent to senior citizens and five to 10 percent to Malaysian students. The card is expected to be introduced soon in co-operation with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism,” he told reporters at the ministry in Putrajaya today.

Restaurant operators, hawkers stew Ku Nan @TengkuAdnanReal over collusion claim
Restaurant operators and hawkers are seeing red with Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor for suggesting a collusion between them and opposition parties in hiking their prices.
.
Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) president Ayoob Khan Muhamad Yakup dismissed the accusation.
“His statement about the involvement of opposition parties is not true at all,” he told Malaysiakini.
“Presma is a not aligned to any political party or NGO. We have not appointed any opposition member to be in our exco,” he said.
.
Ayoob said the removal of several subsidies, including for flour, cooking oil and sugar, was among the reasons which affected the price of food items.
He pointed out that many restaurant operators are struggling to cope with the rising cost of production and the escalating overhead expenses.
“Indian Muslim restaurants don’t simply increase food price. Every food item has to be approved by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry,” he said.
‘Check your facts’
Similarly, Pudu Market small-time traders and hawkers association chairperson Jeff Tan urged the minister not to politicise the issue.
“You should check your facts before saying something. Hawkers and petty traders do not wish to be dragged into politics as they are already suffering from rising cost and forced to pass this on to the consumers in order to survive.
“Cost has increased by 30 percent for this year alone, so it is only natural for traders to increase the price as well,” he told Malaysiakini.
Tan said new players who emerge when the economy is bad also bite into the profit, making it difficult for the existing traders.
“Many have been forced to shut down their business,” he added.
.
Kuala Lumpur bumiputera hawkers and petty traders association chairperson Rosli Sulaiman urged the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to probe Tengku Adnan’s statement.

Gov’t blames opposition for higher restaurant food prices
The opposition is behind traders and restauranteurs who raise food prices, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor said today.
He said this is because those from opposition parties are now part of food traders associations, whose members collude to raise prices.
“In my opinion, the opposition is behind this. I know that when there is an association meeting (for food traders), those from DAP, PKR and the likes play a role to negate everything that the government is doing to ensure that the prices are corrected,” Tengku Adnan said.
He told reporters this when met at carnival at the Seri Johor people’s housing project in Kuala Lumpur today.
Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary-general, also stressed that his remarks are not only directed towards Indian Muslim food traders.
This is to avoid misperceptions, given that he had earlier been accused of singling out Indian Muslim (mamak) food traders when he ticked off profiteering by restauranteurs when speaking at the Kongres India Muslim Malaysia (Kimma)
“Actually, it’s not only mamak shops but also Malay, Chinese and Indian-owned shops.
“I just so happened to be speaking at a Kimma event, which was why I mentioned mamak shops. Why are the mamak traders angry at me? If they don’t jack up prices, then they need not be angry,” he said.
Gets WhatsApp messages on bills
He said he could prove that mamak restaurants also raise prices unreasonably, based on WhatsApp messages sent to him by the people revealing unreasonable bills.
“When they ask for the bill, a sum is shown on the calculator but when it bill is calculated again, a different sum is shown,” he said.

Ku Nan told to resign, after blaming opposition for price hikes
Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor has been told to step down after his “nonsensical” theory that the opposition parties are behind price increases at restaurants.
.
“This simplistic and nonsensical argument should never have come from the mouth of someone dubbed a minister. It shames the entire executive and belittles the rakyat, who are constantly watching the government’s performance.
“After the government’s implication in all sorts of scandals, now a minister makes ridiculous arguments such as these. One should not be surprised if the rakyat now equate ministers with clowns,” said Johor DAP assistant publicity secretary Sheikh Omar Ali in a statement.
He said it is in fact to government’s failure in economic governance that has caused hardships for the people, not alleged collusion by DAP and PKR members as claimed.
