IS debuts first ‘Malay-language newspaper’

In what seems to be an effort to attract more supporters from the region, terror group Islamic State (IS) has come out with its first so-called Malay language newspaper.

Published by Furat Media, the newspaper Al Fatihin: Surat Kabar bagi Muhajirin Berbahasa Melayu di Daulah Islamiyyah is full of propaganda and news on the group’s activities.

Al Fatihin (the conqueror) seems to be adapted from the militant group’s weekly newsletter al Naba, which is originally in Arabic.

Utusan Online claimed that it managed to download the newspaper in full. But the item in question can no longer be found.

Al Fatihin was purportedly uploaded by a person with the username ‘600zaza’ on June 20 on the Internet Archive website.

The newspaper may boast that it is written in Malay, but it is peppered with typos such as penaklukkan, kendaraan, and surat kabar.

And the use of words such as operasi militer and distrik shows elements of the Indonesian language as opposed to the Malay language.

Counter-terror deputy chief expects IS newspaper to be printed in more languages

There is nothing new about the militant group IS publishing its first Malay-language newspaper Al Fatihin to promote its cause, according to the police.

Special Branch counter-terrorism division assistant director Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay said he believed the group will be publishing in more languages soon in order to garner support.

“This issue is nothing new, and it is not just Al Fatihin alone, but there have been many online publications prior to this that were created to spread IS ideology.

“I believe that after this, they will publish in many other languages. They are always working to create new material to ensure that they can increase their following,” Ayub told Malaysiakini.

Ministry warns of stern action against producers, distributors of IS newspaper

The Home Ministry today warned of stern action against people caught producing and distributing a Malay-language newspaper believed to be an Islamic State (IS) publication that is illegal in the country.

Deputy Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said action would be taken after the ministry identified the producer and distributor of the newspaper and determined how they got hold of the newspaper for distribution in the country.

“It is impossible to import the newspaper because the Royal Malaysia Customs monitors all forms of publications that enter the country. We will find out whether the print version is distributed or it is a version downloaded from the Internet,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Nur Jazlan was asked to comment on local media reports of attempts by the IS militant group to recruit fresh followers through the circulation of its propaganda in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, southern Philippines and southern Thailand through the newspaper.
