Man linked to fatal crash found living high life in Seoul

.

JASIN: A man who fled the country, apparently to avoid a court case involving a fatal accident, is back on police radar after he updated his Facebook and Instagram with pictures of himself living a high life in South Korea.

Police are now confident that justice will finally be served in the case where four women were killed in a car crash on Jan 23, 2015.

Ida Dollah, 46, her daughters Siti Rohana, 23, and Siti Rohani, 18, and her mother Saimah Wahab, 77, were killed on the spot when the Kancil they were in was hit by a car head on.
.
Initially, a magistrate’s court let the driver off the hook, but police appealed at the Sessions Court.

Jasin police were facing a dead end when the driver failed to respond to court subpoenas requiring him to attend the hearing in Ayer Keroh.

Two months ago, Jasin Traffic Department investigation officer Insp G. Gunaaseellan was tasked to track down the absconder.

On Jan 9, Jasin police issued a statement asking the man to contact them, even listing his last known address, but did not receive any response.

They also tried to get his number from his friends and relatives, only to be told that he left the country almost two years ago without leaving any contact detail.

The police finally resorted to tracking him through his social media footprint, and hit the jackpot when they found he had posted photos of himself in South Korea on Instagram and Facebook in the first week of January.
.
DSP Arshad said police were making the necessary arrangements to bring him back, including applying for a warrant of arrest.

.
Saskatoon’s Senior Crown Prosecutor Robin Ritter told CNN the wide webbed black belt Antoine was wearing in the photograph matched some marks left on Gargol’s car.
.
“[The car] was dirty and it had dust, and you could see on the side of the car — you could see marks, and the marks were consistent with that black belt,” Ritter told CNN. “And it also looked like there was a struggle.”
.
According to her confession, Antoine and Gargol were intoxicated and got in an argument, and she strangled Gargol with the belt before leaving her body.

Senior citizen who shared photo ‘insulting PM’ out on police bond

A 76-year-old man arrested for sharing a crude photograph allegedly insulting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in a WhatsApp group, has been released on a one-month police bond, police said in Johor Baru today.

He said the investigation papers had been sent to the DPP and the police were awaiting a report from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

“After getting the MCMC report, we will go back to the DPP for further instructions,” he added.

Arrest for WhatsApp ‘insult’ signals growing intolerance for dissent

The arrest of a senior citizen for his posting on a WhatsApp chat group has signalled the current administration’s growing intolerance towards dissent and freedom of speech, the Centre For A Better Tomorrow (Cenbet) says.

“Continued stifling of contrarian voices will only lead to greater disenchantment and goes against open, civil discussion, which Cenbet promotes,” the NGO said in a statement today.

The latest crackdown, the group added, came on the heels of several “highly-questionable” actions taken by the authorities in recent months.

This includes charging activist Bilqis Hijjas for releasing yellow balloons on an event attended by the prime minister, as well as the charging of artist Fahmi Reza, who is known for drawing caricatures of the prime minister as a clown.

“The arrest and subsequent three-day remand against the man who posted a picture onto a WhatsApp group falls into the pattern of the authorities’ sliding tolerance towards alternative viewpoints.

“How a picture shared privately with a small group, where the aggrieved is not even a member of, can affect national security is indeed mind-boggling.”

This, added Cenbet, would only convey the impression of pettiness of the country’s national leaders.

http://goo.gl/KQCPMV Senior citizen remanded for 3days 4WhatApp insult to PM(Mkini)

The 76-year-old author was today remanded for insulting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak by sharing a picture in a WhatsApp chat group.

Johor Bahru Subordinate Court assistant registrar Norhidayah Abd Manaf allowed the three-day remand until Tuesday, the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, after taking into consideration the suspect’s health.

The author suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, reported Sinar Harian.

The author clad in purple lockup uniform, was brought to the court by 10 am today, the daily reported.

Johor Police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the man was arrested at his home in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya, Selangor on Friday.

“The suspect was found to have uploaded the image under the name ‘Pa Ya’ in the WhatApp group ‘Bicara Politik Melayu’ (Discussion on Malay politics) aimed at insulting and offending Malaysians,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which carries a fine of not more than RM50,000 or a maximum one year’s jail sentence or both upon conviction.

Section 233 deals with improper use of a a communications network to make obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive comments with intention to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person.

LAU WENG SAN, DAP assemblyperson for Kampung Tunku, “I will offer my assistance in any way I am capable to this 76-year-old senior citizen. I have already informed community heads to assist me in this.”

Arrest of Kg Tunku senior shows we’re going down the wrong path

Malaysians were outraged when Johor police yesterday arrested a 76-year-old senior citizen in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya yesterday for an offence under Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communication Act 1998.

The senior citizen was arrested for allegedly sending an offensive image of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak under the name ‘Pa Ya’ in the WhatsApp group ‘Bicara Politik Melayu’. It seems to us that the allegedly oppressive nature of Najib’s regime has shown its true colours since the outbreak of his RM4.2 billion scandal.

Cabinet ministers, Umno leaders and government officers including top law-enforcers who work against him are sacked and removed from their positions. Political dissidents, social activists, artists and even ordinary Malaysians, in this case a 76-year-old, are subject to intimidation, persecution and selective prosecutions.

It is sad and leaves no doubt that freedom of expression in Malaysia has gone downwards.

What Najib and his coterie of advisers should be concerned about is why there has been a constant flow of criticisms against him despite the constant harassments and persecutions against his critics since the outbreak of his RM4.2 billion donation scandal?

What they must do is address the message of his critics instead of harassing and persecuting his critics. It would be more beneficial for Najib and his coterie of political advisers to ponder on these questions.

If after due deliberation, they still object to the wrongdoings of his critics, then Najib should institute civil suits against them for defamation, instead of allegedly abusing the process of the law and his office as prime minister to harass and persecute his critics.

LAU WENG SAN is DAP assemblyperson for Kampung Tunku.
