Second Bangladesh militant believed to be Monash student

PETALING JAYA: International news sources have named a second suspected Bangladeshi militant, believed to have studied in the same Malaysian private university as Nibras Islam.

Nibras is the man identified by social media users to be part of the group that killed 22 people at an upscale cafe in Bangladesh’s capital in a terror attack.

According to Bangladeshi English newspaper The Daily Star, a man called Rohan Imtiaz had “also attended Monash university” after a stint at an elite secondary school in Bangladesh.

The report indicated that Rohan may be the son of a senior Bangladeshi politician.

Bangladeshi authorities have yet to release all the images and full names of the attackers. Therefore, the identities of the attackers have yet to be officially confirmed.

In an NDTV report, Rohan’s relatives claimed that he was not pictured among the bodies of the alleged terrorists, which were released by Bangladeshi police.

However, social media users have linked Rohan’s image to another image released by terror monitoring group SITE Intelligence which depicted five youths holding arms and standing in front of an IS flag.

The five youths were said to have been the Dhaka gunmen.

PUTRAJAYA: The Higher Education Ministry is investigating reports that one of the seven militants who had launched an attack on a cafe in Dhaka, Bangladesh had been a student at a private university in Malaysia.

The ministry, in a statement today, said it viewed such allegations as a serious matter and would investigate.

“The ministry will also work together with relevant enforcement agencies on this,” it added. A news portal “Indiatoday” had reported that the suspected militant, identified as Nibras Islam, came from an affluent family and had attended Monash University Malaysia.

A social media account attributed to the youth had stated that Nibras was a treasurer at the Monash University International Student Services. The authenticity of the account had yet to be verified.

PETALING JAYA: Young, smart and with boyish good looks, Nibras Islam came from a wealthy family and had a penchant for Bollywood.

He also enjoyed a wide following of friends at a private university here where he studied commerce after arriving from Dhaka in 2012.

No one could have guessed that the Bangladeshi, in his early 20s, would be brainwashed into the blood-thirsty terrorist who helped attack the Dhaka cafe where 20 hostages were brutally killed on Saturday .

Although the authorities have not officially released the names of the seven attackers, Bangladeshi newspapers The Daily Star and Dhaka Tribune confirmed that he was one of the assailants.

Nibras was initially identified by social media users.

Six of the seven attackers were shot dead and a photo, believed to be of Nibras’ bloodied body on the ground, was widely circulated.

DHAKA: Bangladesh security forces including commandos Saturday stormed a restaurant in the capital where dozens of people including foreigners were being held hostage by suspected Islamist militants, a security official said.

“The operation has began. Commandos have stormed the restaurant,” the official said.

An AFP photographer at the scene said he could hear a massive gunfight as security forces launched the operation more than 10 hours after the hostages were taken.

ISIS claims responsibility for attack at #Bangladesh cafe

Dhaka, Bangladesh (CNN)Armed terrorists are holding as many as 20 hostages at a cafe in a diplomatic zone of Bangladesh’s capital. A gunbattle with police left at least two senior police officers dead and 40 people were injured.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the terror attack, according to Amaq News Agency, an ISIS media branch.

As police exchanged fire with the gunmen, the attackers threw explosives at officers, a source at the scene said.

Here’s the latest:

• Gunmen are holding the hostages at Holey Artisan Bakery, a cafe popular with expats, cafe owner Sumon Reza told CNN. Reza said he managed to escape as six to eight gunmen entered. About 20 people, some of them foreigners, were in the restaurant, he said.

• A police officer in charge of a nearby station was shot dead, Maruf Hasan of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said. A second officer died from gunshot wounds, Detective Police Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam told CNN.

• Alam said 40 people were wounded, some by gunshots and others by shrapnel from explosive devices.

• “We are trying to resolve this issue peacefully,” police official Gen. Benzir Ahmed told reporters.

• Assailants were throwing explosives at police, a source at the scene said.

• The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed a number of past attacks in Bangladesh through its media affiliates, but the government has consistently denied any ISIS presence in the country. Other attacks have been claimed by local Islamist groups.

• Though there was the reported ISIS claim of responsibility, the U.S. State Department said that cannot yet be confirmed. Spokesman John Kirby said the State Department is assessing information.
