The LKY Musical
The LKY Musical is an original play with an epic span and tremendous emotional depth. It explores the tumultuous times of pre-independence Singapore, an era rich in drama.
Central to the play is the figure of Lee Kuan Yew whose life, political battles and enduring relationship with his wife form the crux of the story. The LKY Musical follows the life of LKY from his early days at Raffles College to the founding of independent Singapore. This is a tale of high drama, intrigue, betrayal, love and loyalty. It offers new insights into the emotional struggle faced by LKY and his friends at a time when Singapore history hung in the balance.
This exciting project is the work of an international team of artists – with music by Singapore’s iconic musician and composer, Dick Lee, lyrics by Laurence Olivier Award winner Stephen Clark, book by Tony Petito and a story devised by internationally renowned Singaporean author Meira Chand. Directed by veteran London West End director Steven Dexter (Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress), this is a production that will put the drama of the Singapore Story firmly on a world platform.

The LKY musical capably but predictably honours Lee Kuan Yew’s legacy. http://bit.ly/1Dg9luy

‘As the first show dedicated to arguably the nation’s most significant political figure, the play does have its place in the history of local theatre. It tells Lee’s – and Singapore’s – story without completely airbrushing out the not-so-flattering chapters.’
The show takes us from Lee Kuan Yew’s Raffles College days – when he sulked about his future wife, affectionately called ‘Choo’, beating him in the English and Economic exams – to Singapore’s independence. It unfolds against a minimalistic, effective set, crafted by London-based stage design company takis, that comprises a series of moving wooden panels onto which photos and newspaper headlines are projected.
Although the stories featured in the production are those we know well, it’s refreshing to see them told in a theatrical setting. Our main concern, however, lies in the way that they are told. Twenty-five years is a lot of ground to cover in two and a half hours, but rather than focus on a few key events in detail, the show hurtles through many. Chapters from the former prime minister’s life are only touched upon lightly. One scene cuts quickly to the next, and there’s nothing and no one to serve as an anchor. At times, it feels like we’re watching a dramatised version of Lee’s CV.

Sharon Au sprains ankle on opening night of LKY Musical
LKY Musical actress Sharon Au unfazed by ankle injury she sustained on first night
By:CHARLENE CHUA
Her fear of heights is so great, she claims she does not dare to use the overhead bridge.
Indeed, Sharon Au said she would rather walk long distances to avoid them and cross the road using the pedestrian crossing instead.
So what possessed the local actress to run down three flights of stairs during the first night of The LKY Musical on Tuesday, which caused her to miss her step and sprain her ankle? A technical glitch.
…
Au, 40, said: “The technical glitch caused a delay so we were all rushing backstage to change our clothes, which we only had three or four minutes to do.
“Let me tell you the irony: As I have a big fear of heights, Adrian has always carried me down those three flights of stairs that lead to our backstage changing rooms.
“Last night, adrenaline took over and I just ran ahead of him. He was shocked when I missed my step… and I twisted my right ankle.”
