Jakim restores Secret Recipe’s halal status

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has certified Secret Recipe as halal once more, the cafe chain said today, nearly two months after its certificate was revoked over cleanliness and good manufacturing practices.

“We are proud to announce that Secret Recipe is now being certified halal by Jakim after our recent completion of the renovation and upgrading works at our central kitchen at Taman Mayang and the new plant in Kota Damansara,” Secret Recipe said in a statement.

The chain said it had set up a team of Quality & Hygiene Assurance and Halal Compliance Officers to ensure that its source of ingredients, preparation and processes complied with Malaysia’s Halal certification standards and the Malaysia Standard 1500:2009.

What’s the truth? Jakim says it’s related to hygiene violations but Secret Recipe says it’s related to the renovating and upgrading of their central kitchen.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom:

“Secret Recipe’s central kitchen wasn’t clean.”

Minister: Secret Recipe’s halal certificate was revoked due to cleanliness issues

… Secret Recipe’s halal certificate was revoked due to cleanliness issues at its central kitchen and not because of non-halal ingredients, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom said today. He said an inspection of the facility at Taman Mayang in Petaling Jaya had found the premises not in accordance with the toyyiban (good quality) requirements for halal certification.

“Halal certificates cover everything from farm to table […] when we inspected the processing facility, there were factors involving toyyiban,” he told the Dewan Rakyat. He was responding to a question from Idris Ahmad (PAS-Bukit Gantang), who wanted clarification as to why the restaurant chain’s halal certificate was revoked.

Earlier Tuesday, the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) said the chain’s Halal certificate was revoked on May 7 over sanitary issues. “We had to revoke the halal certificate because there has been a violation to the Malaysia Halal Certification Procedures Manual that involves serious cleanliness issues,” said Jakim.

Secret Recipe cites kitchen renovation for halal cert revocation

PETALING JAYA: Restaurant chain Secret Recipe has attributed the halal certificate revocation to the upgrading of their central kitchen as part of their expansion plan. “This is to inform that we are renovating and upgrading our central kitchen in preparation of our expansion plan. “Thus, with requirement of Jakim, we are re-submitting the application for Halal Certification,” said the statement posted on its Facebook, Secret Recipe Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — Malaysia’s federal religious authorities confirmed today that local restaurant chain Secret Recipe has lost its halal certification, but said it was because it had violated its cleanliness guidelines and was not due to haram (forbidden) ingredients in its food products. According to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s (Jakim) Halal Hub Department, the certification was revoked since the chain violated the Malaysian Halal Certification Procedure Manual in cleanliness and good manufacturing practices. “This revocation however was not caused by the use of haram ingredients in processing its products,” the department’s director Hakimah Mohd Yusoff said in a statement posted on the department’s official Facebook page. The department said it has summoned the company, which has pledged to rectify the matter. It said the certificate was revoked on May 7, 2015, but Secret Recipe can apply for a new certification as long as it adheres to the standards. – See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/jakim-revokes-secret-recipes-halal-certificate-over-hygiene-violations#sthash.JB452OIE.dpuf
