PKR rep claims Tian Chua assaulted during arrest in Permatang Pauh

Tian Chua tweets about his situation:

If the police not prepared to record statement, at least let me get some rest. Not holding me up waiting in vain. No sight of IO.

How long more I’m going to wait. Hardly any sleep since last night as I took 8h drive to reach Pmtg Pauh; had started campaign since 8am.

Did instruct to conduct sleep deprivation as a subtle tactic to penalize the arrested activists. What’s their game plan?

Tangkap 11:30mlm, 12 tgh mlm berangkat dari IPD Perdau, 3:15pg tiba IPD Dang Dangi. Sepanjang tempoh cuma menunggu IO utk ambil statement.

Tunggu dari 3pg hingga 5pg subur–bayang2 IO belum ternampak. Kalau tak bersedia lakukan siasatan, baik masukkan lokap, kurang2 boleh tidor.

Brought to IPD Dang Wangi at about 3:15h; have been sitting & waiting since then, nothing happens. I thought it was a super urgent mission.

I’m brought to IPD Pedra, I assumed they will send me back to the lockup in KL.

DAP man draws flak over heavily-edited photo of anti-GST rally

A screengrab from Ngeh’s twitter post.

PETALING JAYA: A Twitter post criticising the alleged misreporting of Friday’s anti-GST rally by certain media has backfired on Perak DAP chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham.

On Saturday afternoon, Ngeh posted an aerial image allegedly taken of Kuala Lumpur on Friday showing thousands of red-clad anti-GST protesters.

“Aerial view of anor sectn of Hancur GST. BN media says turn up only 5,000. U believe?” Ngeh’s accompanying comment read.

Social media users were, however, quick to point out that the photo he used had been heavily edited. The editing was also very badly executed with jagged edges and repetitive “copy and pasting”.

“As an MP, Adun, lawyer, church senior & father I’m surprised you didn’t zoom in to check before using this photo? BIG fail la,” said @rawnatawil while @FaizalKasim said, “Wahhhh, congratulations. That’s almost half of the world population there.”

“Over and under LRT tracks too!” added @saadbjohan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Bar Council president and Negara-ku patron Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) secretary-general S. Arutchelvan and PAS central committee member Dr Hatta Ramli have been released from police custody.

Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo said the magistrate’s court here Saturday rejected an application by the police to remand them for four days.

“The application was refused on grounds that the persons involved were prepared to cooperate and surrendered when the police called.

“So there is no necessity for them to be held custody pending investigations,” he told reporters at the Jinjang central lockup.

Gobind said the four would go to the Dang Wang police headquarters at 4pm to have their statements recorded over the May 1 anti-Goods and Services (GST) rally.

Be careful, IGP tweets warning to MP’s aide

zz

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar has issued a warning via Twitter to a DAP lawmaker’s aide who questioned the arrests with regards to the anti-GST rally.

“Be careful in making extreme allegations towards the police who are carrying out their responsibility to safeguard peace,” he tweeted.

Khalid saw red over Jay Jay Denis’ tweet which accused the police of embarking on another move to “terrorise the people of Malaysia” by carrying out mass arrests.

However, the research assistant to DAP MP Charles Santiago remained unperturbed.

In a subsequent tweet, Denis replied that he was standing by his earlier statement.

Double standards?

He also called on Khalid to be frank on the reasons behind the arrest of protesters who participated in the anti-GST rally.

“Why is there a different treatment for other protests?” he asked.

Khalid then responded with another tweet with an image showing graffiti, a small fire and smoke bomb, asking Denis, “Who is terrorising our streets?”

Although he did not mention any protest in particular, it is believed that Denis was referring to the recent protest outside a church in Petaling Jaya.

UPDATE: Anti-GST protesters called to disperse following fiery speeches by opposition leaders

KUALA LUMPUR – Thousands of protesters gathered in the city centre on Friday for a rally against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Malaysia, with opposition leaders saying that the tax would widen the income gap and calling for it to be abolished.

Many wore red T-shirts with the words “Bantah GST” (Reject GST) and carried banners with slogans like “Anti-GST parade: This is not a protest, it is a process” and “We fight for a better Malaysia”.

The protesters – who included members of opposition parties and non-governmental organisations, as well as parents and their children – gathered at five meeting points including Maybank’s headquarters and the Sogo shopping complex.

They later marched to Dataran Merdeka, or Independence Square, before moving on to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

Leaders from opposition parties Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and Democratic Action Party (DAP) addressed the crowd in front of the Petronas Twin Towers, calling for the GST to be abolished, The Star reported.

Police have only approved for the rally to be held at Padang Merbok, but organisers are going ahead to launch it from six locations – the Sogo shopping complex, National Mosque, outside Masjid Jamek, Dataran Maybank, Central Market, and transport terminus Puduraya.

PR politicians are expected to lead the crowds gathered at the first four locations, while the rally’s organising committee members and other civil society groups are to march from Central Market, and student activists will march from Puduraya.

The plan is to take a roughly 3km walk to converge at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC).

The civil society groups behind the street rally in the capital to oppose the goods and services tax (GST) today are hoping for a non-partisan event and have asked that no political speeches be made.

The Workers Day rally, to begin at several points across the heart of Kuala Lumpur, is backed by Bersih 2.0, Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as the opposition.

But a post on the Facebook page by the organisers “Bantah GST/Reject GST” states that there will be no speeches by politicians.

“The event begins at 2.30pm with brief speeches by society and NGO representatives. No political party speeches,” a post said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Dataran Merdeka has been turned into a no-go zone as police cordoned off the field ahead of the anti-GST rally on Friday.

The protest was scheduled to take place after the Friday prayers starting from several meeting points in the city centre. The protesters would walk to Dataran Merdeka and later to KLCC.

Scores of policemen were seen at Dataran Merdeka and barricades were placed around the field.

Barricades have also been put up at KLCC in anticipation of the protesters arrival and to prevent them from entering the shopping area.

Carparks at several buildings near Dataran Merdeka were also sealed off in an apparent effort to prevent the protesters from gaining access to the area.
