Jakim Rules: Reaction to K-pop band B1A4

Jakim, on the release of the proposed guidelines, had explained that the measure was taken after a three-minute video of a South Korean band’s members hugging and kissing tudung-clad teenage Muslim girls on stage went viral on social media.

Unhappy with strict guidelines, Malaysia’s K-pop fans consider going overseas for gigs

KUALA LUMPUR — Local fans of Korean pop culture, or K-pop, have expressed their willingness to travel to other countries if the strict ruling by Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will deter their favourite bands from performing in Malaysia.

Venus, an administrator for a local online K-pop fan club, said many fans were unhappy with Jakim’s knee-jerk reaction which came months after the controversy involving tudung-clad Malay girls being hugged and kissed by members of a Korean pop band at a concert in January.

She said the authorities appeared to be targeting the K-pop fans but somehow overlooked the local entertainment scenes, which also contained many inappropriate acts when interacting with their fans.

“A lot of the K-pop fans will not hesitate to go overseas to watch their idols’ perform if the artistes do not want to come here due to the strict ruling by the authorities,” she said.

The diehard fans, she added, are willing to put in extra hours at work just to collect enough money and get the chance to watch their favourite artistes perform up close.

Jakim Rules

The new rules set out what kind of personality is required, what kind of artistes may perform, the kind of jokes to be allowed, and forbids “extreme laughter” or being facetious about “serious and mournful matters”, the report said.

An artiste should have a “noble personality” and be of “good morals”, and be dressed decently, covering their “aurat”.

Performances, songs, events and music videos must not insult religious sensitivities, the country and any racial group. Symbolism that went against Islamic teachings and faith was forbidden.

Jokes should be sparing, and “toe the line”.

Only virtues such as “goodness and pure values”, and “repentance” should be promoted in song lyrics, with music that was positive, bringing peace, and not evoking negative emotions that contradict Islamic teachings, MMO reported.

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department’s (Jakim) latest guidelines for concerts, which imposes gender segregation, has been criticised as “unfair” and “lacks effectiveness”.

“Forcefully executing stringent controls owing to the harmless K-Pop concert which has been deemed an incident by others lacks effectiveness,” MCA vice president Chew Mei Fun said in a statement today.

“Inculcation of moral or polite behaviour may be nurtured via advocacy and education,” she said, adding that the latest guidelines did not bode well for the development of Malaysia’s creative and entertainment industry.

Malaysia’s Islamic agency Jakim under fire for proposing gender segregation at concerts

Published on Apr 20, 2015 9:11 AM

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Concert promoters, entertainers and non-government organisations have hit back at the Malaysian Islamic Development Department’s push for gender segregation at concerts.

The groups reacted strongly to the proposed guidelines released by Jakim on Saturday, with some dubbing the move as unwise, unwarranted, and that it threatens to ruin people’s livelihood.

According to Jakim, the measure was taken after a three-minute video showing members of a South Korean band hugging and kissing female Malay fans on stage went viral on social media in January, prompting criticism that led Jakim’s director-general Othman Mustapha to describe the incident as having “shamed Malaysia and the Muslim community”.

Non-binding rules call for virtuous music and song, no facetious jokes, forbids men and women to mingle on stage

zk

KUALA LUMPUR: Islamic authorities have set new rules on the kind of personality, dress, music, lyrics and jokes allowed for stage shows and music concerts by foreign personalities, it was reported today.

Men and women are now not  allowed to interact on stage. (In January a controversy arose after an online allegation that young Malay women fans had supposedly been “molested” on stage at a concert of the South Korean pop group B1A4.)

The rules were relased by Jakim, the federal Islamic affairs department, which has religious authority in the Federal Territories.

Malay Mail Online reported that the new rules were approved by a national fatwa convention in February.

They are not binding in law but federal Islamic affairs minister Jamil Khir Baharom had previously said that approving authorities were advised to ask event organisers to abide by Jakim’s rules.
