Kajang struck by flash floods after heavy rain

PETALING JAYA: A sudden but severe flash flood struck Kajang in Kuala Lumpur Saturday afternoon, but waters subsided as rapidly as they appeared after about an hour.
Reports of severe floods in Kajang appeared over social media, with pictures showing water levels knee-deep in various parts of Kajang town.
According to Hulu Langat MCA Youth chief Pung Wai Hung, the flood started at around 3pm, with about half of Kajang town submerged in flood waters.
Pung said that the water level reached a level of nearly two metres in some areas.

KAJANG: Barely two months after a flash flood hit parts of the town centre, shop owners and traders around Pasar Besar Kajang are once again counting their losses.
Another round of floods struck Jalan Haroun on Wednesday.
“Water rose slowly but did not enter the shop,” said salesman Nordin Ahmad, 32, who works in a textile shop.
“We are used to this. It happens frequently.
“In fact, we continued selling carpets and resumed our business two hours after the waters subsided.
“The authorities cleared mud from the road within an hour, except at the Kajang wet market,” he said, adding that a river nearby overflowed onto the road in September.
Business owner Lee Kim Tuan, 67, said he spent about RM2,000 constructing a foot-high wall in front and at the back of his record shop that has been operating for more than 20 years.
“I built the barrier last year. I was afraid that the water would enter my shop,” he said.
“There are still many businesses that have not built such barriers, but I had no choice but to take the necessary precaution,” said Lee, adding that flood waters only reached the doorstep of his shop now.

PETALING JAYA, Nov 14 — Kajang is bracing for more floods with Malaysia now in the monsoon season.
Kajang municipal council corporate planning and communications officer Kamarul Sulaiman said its rescue officers were in “ready mode” to face the possibility of another flood.
“We will do our best to ensure the safety and well-being of Kajang residents,” he said.
On Wednesday, Bandar Kajang, Taman Jasmin and Saujana Impian were submerged in 50cm of rain water, with an estimated 50 residential and commercial premises affected.
Assisted by police and council’s rescue team, 14 rescuers from the Kajang and Bangi fire station rushed to the areas after receiving reports about trapped victims.
According to Kamarul, the flash floods began at 3:30pm and subsided half an hour later.
He said following the floods, cleaning-up operations by the council and the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage began at 6pm and were completed by midnight.

Flash floods hit Kajang
Streets flooded near Kajang market.
KUALA LUMPUR: Kajang town and its surrounding areas were hit by flash floods after almost three hours of heavy downpour Wednesday, which began at 2pm.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operation) Mohamad Sani Harul said among the badly affected areas were the Kajang town, Taman Jasmin and Saujana Impian.
