PUTRAJAYA: As Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s final appeal against the Court of Appeal’s decision on his Sodomy II enters the second day, two busloads of supporters have started arriving near Palace of Justice here.

Submissions by Anwar’s team of 14 lawyers will be continued with N. Surendran and Ramkarpal Singh is expected to take over from him.

Yesterday’s submission of Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram was centred on KY Jelly lubricant, allegedly used by the opposition leader when he was accused of sodomising his aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008.

PUTRAJAYA: The hearing for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s appeal against a sodomy conviction was held back for a moment when the man in question went missing from court.

However, Anwar who rushed to the courtroom, apologised to Tun Arifin Zakaria for the delay and the hearing resumed.

The Federal Court has extended the hearing for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy appeal from two to three days because of the volume of submissions by the defence.

The hearing, which began today, would now continue until Thursday, Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria said, before adjourning the court for a mid-day break.

Anwar’s lead counsel, retired Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram, had spent the morning making submissions to show that sodomy complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 29, was not a credible witness.

Besides Sri Ram, other lawyers who will be submitting for Anwar are Ramkarpal Singh, Sangeet Kaur Deo and N. Surendran.

The prosecution, led by Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, will submit after submissions from the defence, and this will be followed by final arguments by both sides before the hearing ends.

Shafee told reporters during the court’s recess that he expected a reserved judgment because of lengthy submission and amount of paperwork to go through.

A “Justice for Saiful” t-shirt being torched by protestors

PUTRAJAYA: A scuffle broke out when a small group of people burned two t-shirts with pictures of Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in front of a police barricade outside the Palace of Justice here.

The group was then reprimanded by other supporters, including PKR youth members, resulting in lots of shoving and shouting.

The situation was quickly resolved, with police not needing to get involved.

Anwar arrives at Federal Court to loud cheers of Reformasi

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 28, 2014:

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the Federal Court building about 8.50am and was loudly greeted by supporters and well-wishers with shouts of “Reformasi”.

Speaking to the people, he said he was confident of a fair court decision.

“That is why I returned to the country. The highest court of the land should follow the Rule of Law. If they follow the Rule of Law, I am confident that I will be vindicated and acquitted,” he said.

Anwar is accompanied by Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali and his wife, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the PKR president. Anwar’s daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar, whose also a PKR vice-president is also in the courtroom.

Former federal court judge leads Anwar’s defence

A five-man panel of judges led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria will hear the sodomy appeal by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was convicted by the Court of Appeal last March.

Others on the bench are Tan Sri Raus Sharif, Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Embong, Tan Sri Suriyadi Halim Omar and Tan Sri Ahmad Maarop.

Anwar, 67, was sentenced to five years’ jail by the appellate court but has obtained stay of execution pending the outcome of his appeal in the Federal Court, which will be heard today and tomorrow.

Anwar’s defence team is led by retired federal court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram.

There are 14 lawyers representing Anwar. Among them are Ramkarpal Singh, Sangeet Kaur Deo, Zaleha Al-Hayat, Latheefa Koya, N Surendran, R Sivarasa and Eric Paulsen.

Gobind Singh Deo and prominent lawyer Tommy Thomas are also observing the case today.

Anwar told reporters, when he stopped to talk briefly at the court, that the defence team was previously led by senior lawyer Datuk Sulaiman Abdullah, who is still unwell and uses a wheelchair. – October 28, 2014.
