Australia and Terrorism

Australia is close to Malaysia not only in the sense that it is just a few hours’ flight away but that many Malaysians also fly there and back daily. Indeed, many Malaysians are Permanent Residents of Australia.

Australia disrupts terror plot to bring down airplane

Officials did not specify if the alleged plot targeted a domestic or international flight, but Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reported that a local route had been the objective.

SYDNEY: Australia has foiled an Islamist-inspired “terrorist plot” to bring down an airplane with an improvised explosive, authorities said Sunday, after four people were arrested in raids across Sydney.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the plot appeared to be “elaborate” rather than planned by a lone wolf, as security was beefed up at major domestic and international airports across the nation.

“I can report last night that there has been a major joint counter-terrorism operation to disrupt a terrorist plot to bring down an airplane,” Turnbull told reporters.

“The threat of terrorism is very real. The disruption operation, the efforts overnight have been very effective but there’s more work to do.”
.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin described the plot as “Islamic-inspired”, saying four men had been arrested in a series of raids across Sydney on Saturday.

“We do believe it is Islamic-inspired terrorism. Exactly what is behind this is something we need to investigate fully,” he said.

Colvin added that local authorities had received “credible information from partner agencies” about the claims but would not elaborate further or state if the men were on any watch list.

Thursday, Oct 15, 2015

SYDNEY – Australian police revealed Thursday a 12-year-old is on the radar of counter-terrorism authorities as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull urged closer cooperation with Muslim leaders to combat a growing extremist threat.

The boy was listed on a federal court order among a group of males that may have helped Farhad Jabar, 15, who shot a police employee in the back of the head in Sydney earlier this month while reportedly shouting religious slogans.

“We’re shocked that a 12-year-old is on police radar for these types of matters,” Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“This threat has evolved, it’s become younger.” He added that “the problem is getting worse for Australia, not better”.

“The numbers of individuals that we’re concerned about overseas has plateaued a little.

“Some very good work is being done by our border agencies and our police and security agencies to stop people from leaving for the conflict zones, but there’s no doubt that this problem is becoming more acute and more difficult.” Earlier this week, Canberra outlined plans to tighten counter-terrorism laws further, including restricting the movements of suspects as young as 14 in the wake of the deadly attack by Jabar on police employee Curtis Cheng. Jabar was killed by police fire soon after.

SYDNEY: Hundreds of protesters faced off with left-wing opponents on Saturday in a standoff over plans to build a mosque in a rural Australian town, witnesses said, the latest anti-Islam protest since a Muslim teenager killed a police officer this month.

Farhad Khalil Mohammad Jabar, 15, was shot and killed by police after he opened fire on police accountant Curtis Cheng as Cheng left police headquarters in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta on Oct 2.

Right-wing activists from the United Patriots Front, which says that its aim is opposing the spread of Islam, faced off with members of a left-wing coalition promoting tolerance in the town of Bendigo in Victoria state.

The dispute began over plans to build a mosque in the town and has been simmering for months. Police said four arrests were made, but all were subsequently released.

The two groups were generally well behaved, a police spokeswoman told Reuters. Witnesses said the two groups between them numbered in the hundreds.

The right-wing protest was part of a coordinated worldwide series of anti-Islam protests organised by fringe extremist groups, with calls on social media for further protests in US cities and elsewhere later in the day.

Australian authorities have raided a mosque that a 15-year-old gunman reportedly visited before he shot dead a civilian police employee in an “act of terrorism”.

New South Wales state police said religious leaders gave consent for the action. The mosque in western Sydney is close to the scene of the double shooting on Friday (Oct 2) afternoon.

“NSW Police yesterday executed a warrant at a mosque in Parramatta,” police said in a statement today.

“The warrant was undertaken by arrangement with leadership at the mosque who provided full assistance to police at all times.”

The 15-year-old gunman Farhad Khalil Mohammad Jabar had killed finance worker Curtis Cheng at close range outside the police force’s headquarters before he was shot dead by officers.

The family of NSW Police Force accountant Curtis Cheng have spoken for the first time following his murder on Friday afternoon by 15-year-old gunman Farad Jabar Khalil Mohammad.

In a statement released this afternoon Mr Cheng’s wife Selina, daughter Zilvia and son Alpha, said they were “heartbroken’’ but “grateful for the fruitful and happy life he has shared with us’’.

“On behalf of the Cheng family, I would like to thank all those who have expressed their well wishes and blessings upon us following the tragic passing of our most loved husband and father,’’ the statement says.

“My father was a kind, gentle, and loving person. He was humorous, generous of heart and always put the family first. He has set a tremendous example for us as a family.

“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken that he has been taken from us, but we are truly grateful.

“To the many people who have offered their condolences and kind words about him, we are extremely moved by your thoughts and sympathies. We are touched by the personal visit from the New South Wales Premier and the Police Commissioner.

“This was a comforting reminder of the warm regard that was held for him, especially by the New South Wales police community. He will be missed by all of us. We will cherish our memory of him forever. Alpha, Zilvia and Selina Cheng.’’

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said today that a gunman who shot dead a police worker was a 15-year-old boy of Iraqi-Kurdish background who was born in Iran and his actions were linked to terrorism, police say.

“We believe that his actions were politically motivated and therefore linked to terrorism,” the commissioner told reporters in Sydney.

The gunman had visited Parramatta Mosque before the attack and reportedly shouted “Allah, Allah” after the shooting.

The teenager, a naturalised Australian who arrived his with his family from Iran, had walked to the police headquarters from his home in North Parramatta before opening fire on a civilian police employee.

The victim has been identified as Curtis Cheng, who had worked in the NSW police finance department for 17 years.

The arrests took place in Melbourne, where a joint counterterrorism team served a total of seven warrants Saturday morning. Police said they were conducting searches at properties.

5 Australian teens arrested on charges of plotting ANZAC Day attack

Published April 18, 2015 Associated Press

SYDNEY – Five Australian teenagers were arrested Saturday on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack at a Veterans’ Day ceremony that included targeting police officers, officials said.

The suspects included two 18-year-olds who are alleged to have been preparing an attack at the ANZAC Day ceremony in Melbourne, Australian Federal Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Neil Gaughan told reporters.

Another 18-year-old was arrested on weapons charges and two other men, aged 18 and 19, were in custody and assisting police, police said.

ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and commemorates the World War I battle in Turkey on April 25.

Five arrested in counter-terrorism raids in Melbourne’s south-east

April 18, 2015 – 1:53PM

UPDATE:  Police have charged an 18-year-old man with conspiring to plan a terrorist attack following multiple raids across Melbourne on Saturday morning.

The man, from Hallam, will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court after 2pm.

The man was one of two men arrested in counter-terrorism raids who police say were planning an Islamic State-inspired attack at a Melbourne Anzac Day event.

Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police executed seven search warrants on properties in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring from 4am on Saturday. Five men were arrested in the raids, the culmination of Operation Rising.

Two 18-year-olds, from Hallam and Hampton Park, were arrested on terrorism-related offences.

Both men were “associates” but not relatives of Numan Haider, who was shot and killed by police in September 2014 after stabbing anti-terrorism officers at Endeavour Hills, Victoria Police acting Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said.

SYDNEY (AFP) – Increasing numbers of young women are altering the profile of Australians joining the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Attorney-General George Brandis said Saturday, enticed by the “false glamour” of the organisation.

“But a more recent estimate by the national security agencies suggests that a growing number of young women are travelling to participate in that fighting as well.” Brandis said about 90 Australians were now believed to be caught up in the conflict, compared to 70 last year, the ABC reported.

Australian charged over terrorist plot targeting government

An Australian man was charged on Wednesday with possessing documents connected to a planned terrorist attack on government targets in Sydney.

But the police insisted that people should not be afraid.

Sulayman Khalid, 20, who also goes by the name Abu Bakr, was arrested following raids last week which uncovered a large number of documents, a rifle, and two shotguns.

He was charged with being in “possession of documents designed to facilitate a terrorist attack”, while a 21-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was accused of breaching a control order that prohibited him making phone calls.

Their arrests come on the back of a series of pre-dawn raids across Sydney and Brisbane in September as concern mounts about the flow of people to Iraq and Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria group and other jihadists.

“Certainly the documents talked a little bit about potential government targets,” said Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner for National Security Michael Phelan.

POLICE are confident they’ve disrupted a potential terrorist cell following the arrests of two young Sydney men.

Sulayman Khalid, 20, from Regent’s Park, who was arrested by police on Tuesday, had documents naming government targets for potential terrorist attacks, police allege.

He was denied bail when he faced Parramatta Local Court on terrorism charges on Wednesday morning.

Another man, 21, will also face the same court on Wednesday after being charged on Tuesday with breaching a control order. The arrests followed raids last Thursday which uncovered a large number of documents, a rifle, and two shotguns.

The raids were part of Operation Appleby — the same team that carried out sweeping pre-dawn counter-terror raids in Sydney in September.

The seized documents were “designed to clearly facilitate an attack”, said Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Michael Phelan.

Australia cancels passports of 73 people to prevent them joining

SYDNEY: Australians have been told to prepare for more large-scale counter-terrorism raids as Attorney-General George Brandis revealed 73 people have had their passports cancelled to prevent them joining the Islamic State group.

Canberra in September raised its terror threat level and carried out extensive raids in Sydney and Brisbane to disrupt an alleged plot by IS supporters to abduct and behead a member of the public. Only two people were charged despite 800 officers being involved.

Federal police Assistant Commissioner Neil Gaughan said similar raids were likely, but refused to comment on whether any preparations were under way. “What we’ll see now is more raids like we saw in Sydney because the environment has changed,” he told members of Sydney’s Muslim community on an ABC television programme late Monday. “The paradigm has changed such that we will be forced to react much quicker than what we previously have, and I think the community will see more of this where we will do a large number of execution of search warrants and probably only one or two arrests.”

IS recruitment of Sydney teen could prove a ‘big mistake’, says counter-terrorism expert

Anne Aly, a Curtin University research fellow specialising in countering violent extremism, said Islamic State’s use of Elmir could provide “the kind of counter-propaganda we need” to degrade the group’s standing among would-be sympathisers.

“I think it’s a big mistake for them because he’s so young and fresh-faced … After a while people who look at him will see nothing more than a little boy who is pretending to be a big man, but who is being used and lost,” Dr Aly told The Australian.

“The first time you see Elmir, you say how shocking these things are. But if you keep watching, it’s hard not to think that this young person is brainwashed and manipulated.

“I think we can put out this message – this is what ISIS does to you; it sucks you in, this boy’s life will never ever, ever be the same.”

Sydney schoolboy jihadist appears in new video

ABDULLAH Elmir, the Sydney teen who traded high school for a life fighting with Islamic State, is in Iraq and has appeared in a new video

Entitled, An evening on the banks of the Tigris River in the Province of Nineveh in the Islamic State, the video shows the ginger-haired teenager surrounded by black-clad jihadis relaxing at what appears to be a once-popular tourist park on an island in the middle of the river. Young primary-school-aged boys are seen in the background as the fighters walk through the park, holding large assault rifles while walking with the men.

The fighters gather to eat, pray and then recite religious texts at one of the riverside gazebos. Several of the fighters also appeared in last week’s video featuring Elmir, in which he railed against Australia and Tony Abbott, as well as other Western countries.

The men are shown crossing the River Tigris on a barge before washing then praying. All heavily armed, they are pictured eating.

Local authorities say some Muslim women are tipping them off via anonymous phone calls to the national security hotline; others are turning up to police stations themselves to discuss their concerns.

The mothers of some young men have also been active in discreetly tipping off authorities about fears that their sons may travel overseas to fight.

ASIO has cancelled 73 passports of suspected Australian extremists to prevent them travelling to Syria to fight with terror groups.

Terror WAGs in jihadi tip-offs

THE wives of some Muslim extremists in Australia are choosing love over jihad, secretly tipping off authorities to prevent their partners travelling overseas to fight with Islamic State.

The trend is part of what authorities believe is a quiet backlash by Islamic women against the violent and misogynistic terror group, which has radicalised more than 100 Australian men.

Since Islamic State came to prominence, security agencies have noted a conspicuous absence of women on their watchlists and say the local terror threat is being driven almost exclusively by young men.

Increasingly, authorities have noted that the people who are quietly dobbing in suspected radicals to police are their wives or girlfriends. It’s a trend that has surprised security agencies, which have intervened on a number of occasions to prevent a would-be jihadist from going to Syria while at the same time keeping secret the fact the tip-off came from their partner.

“We are finding that, particularly with young men that are trying to travel, the women have been very, very good at providing us information and to some extent putting their heads on the block to do that,” one security source said.

“Full credit to them (for) being brave enough to talk to the cops and ASIO. They don’t want their husbands to die and I think that’s what it comes down to, they don’t want their husbands to go off (to the Middle East) thinking it’s a Boy’s Own adventure. Sometimes I think the women have a bit more sense.”

A Man ‘Under Surveillance’ Following ISIS Threats Has Been Shot Dead By Police In Melbourne

Police in Melbourne have shot dead a man who stabbed two officers and was reportedly making threats involving the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

Two police officers, one from Victoria Police and an AFP officer, have been taken to hospital with stab wounds, after an altercation shortly before 8pm local time.

Reports say there are connections between the suspect and last week’s operations against suspected ISIS-linked cells in Australia.

News Corp reported the man who was killed “had been under surveillance and it is believed he was one of 50 men who recently had their passport cancelled.”

The current incident took place at Endeavour Hills in Melbourne’s south-east.

Here’s what we have from Victoria Police:

Police are currently at the scene of a police shooting in Endeavour Hills.

It is understood a Victoria Police member and an AFP member, from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team, met an 18-year-old man at Endeavour Hills police station on Heatherton Road in relation to an ongoing investigation.

It is believed an altercation has occurred about 7.45pm outside the police station, resulting in the stabbing of the two police members.

One of the officers has then discharged his firearm, fatally shooting the 18-year-old man.

Both police officers were taken to hospital and are in a stable condition.

Australia Arrests 15 ISIS Members Plotting Beheadings in Largest Terror Raid in Its History:

Embedded image permalink

Over 800 police officers in Australia arrested 15 people on Thursday allegedly connected to terror group ISIS, who are believed to have planned to kidnap and behead people on camera. The counter-terrorism raids on houses and vehicles in Sydney and Brisbane were the largest ever in the country’s history.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the raids occurred just before dawn on Thursday, and took into custody Mohammad Ali Baryalei, identified as Australia’s most senior Islamic State member.

Commonwealth prosecutor Michael Allnutt told Sydney’s Central Local Court that the foiled plans were “clearly designed to shock, horrify and terrify the community.”

Allnutt added there was “a plan to commit extremely serious offenses” that involved an “unusual level of fanaticism.”

The prosecutor noted that the plot involved the “random selection of persons to rather gruesomely execute” and said there was an “irrational determination to commit that plan,” as the suspects were committed to carrying out their attacks even though they knew they were under police surveillance.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison warns of ‘specific’ terror threat to Australia

Mark Kenny and Heath Aston September 10, 2014

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday there was a “specific” threat to Australia above and beyond the rise of terrorist organisations in the Middle East such as the Islamic State.

“I think these things get specific to Australia and I’m not at liberty to go beyond a statement such as that,” he told ABC.

“The fact that there are Australians involved … and there is ambitions that go well beyond just the establishment of the [Islamic] State and, as I said, there are many other terrorist organisations that fit under this umbrella of what is occurring in the Middle East.”

He said that after previous conflicts when people returned “radicalised” to Australia, “two-thirds of them got up to things when they came back”.

Mr Morrison was speaking after police swooped on an Islamic bookshop south of Brisbane, making two arrests, and security agencies prepare to lift the national terror warning to high from its current medium level.

That decision, expected to become official as early as Thursday, reflects ASIO and other security agency assessments that a terrorist attack on in Australian soil is now likely.
