‘Pet-a-dog’ event had hidden, subversive meaning, says Utusan column
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 — The “I Want to Touch a Dog” event had a hidden agenda which attempted to create new culture that ultimately insults Islam, according to an opinion piece in Utusan Malaysia written by Chief Director of the Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) Datuk Mustapha Othman.
He added that the campaign has raised public concern, particularly among Muslims, because it clearly contradicts the customs of the country as the Shafie sect forbids Muslims from touching dogs intentionally.
The writer said the act is the same as someone sinning on purpose but later choosing to repent.
“When the organisers of the event have a hidden agenda, their honesty is no longer there. Things like this should not be left alone. Jakim and Jais should act accordingly as mocking Islamic Law should not be allowed to occur in countries that have made Islam the religion of the Federation,” he said.
“Strangely enough, Muslims were also sponsoring the campaign and even seem proud of the controversy to holding dogs, as if they weren’t taught from small how to approach dogs,” said the author.
“The former Mufti of Perlis, Dr Asri Zainal Abidin, is trying to justify it. It’s easy to understand because of the way his ‘character’ likes to stand on many controversial issues.”
“If the influence on religious liberalism is not curbed, like what is happening in Indonesia, the idea of religious pluralism (all religions are equal) will widen in Malaysia and it is a danger to the unity of the Ummah in the country,” he said.

Daily death threat avalanche hits Syed Azmi
Organiser of the ‘I want to touch a dog’ event Syed Azmi Alhabshi has been drowning under thousands of death threats and other hateful messages within hours for holding the controversial event, according to his lawyer, Syahredzan Johan.
“He has been getting severe death threats. It is on his WhatsApp, on his phone, on his Facebook, everywhere…
“Just to give a brief (illustration), I was with him yesterday. Just in a few hours, on his WhatsApp unread messages, there were about 1,000, nearly 2,000 (messages),” Syahredzan said during a press conference today.
They range from threats to break his neck to killing him on sight on the streets, Syahredzan said, and his co-organisers of the event are “extremely concerned” for his safety.

However, the social activist stressed that the programme was meant to be educational and not to promote liberalism, as alleged by certain quarters.
“I organised this event because of Allah, not to deviate the people’s faiths, try to change the Islamic rules of law, poke fun at the ulama or encourage pluralism,” he told a packed press conference at Kelab Sri Selangor, here Saturday.
Reading from a press statement, he admitted that there were weaknesses in the programme, and apologised for the trouble and insensitivities that the programme caused.

Threats aimed at mothers, children attendees of dog-touching event http://bit.ly/1yoJnhs http://fb.me/6QUkagIAB
PETALING JAYA, Malaysia – Unsatisfied with just targeting organiser Syed Azmi Alhabshi, the mob of angry netizens are now sending hate-filled messages to participants pictured in the ‘I Want To Touch A Dog’ (IWTTAD) event.
“The threats are really bad. Through social media, text and phone calls.
“They seem to be targeting especially those women with kids,” said a source who contacted The Star Online.
The source had requested The Star Online to remove photos from the event as the threats received had turned unbearable.
Organisers of the gathering had also pleaded with the media and attendees to remove images of people at the event.
“We, the team behind IWTTAD would like to humbly request all participants of the event, no matter what colour t-shirt you were wearing on that day to please take down any/or all photos that you might have put up.
“The decision to do so does not undermine anyone’s views or thoughts on this matter,” read the statement, which was posted on Thursday.

Threats to kill, beat up ‘touch a dog’ organiser surface online – The Malaysian Insider http://shar.es/1mQNni via @sharethis
The Malays, furious at his audacity in organising an event to educate the public on Islam’s stance on dogs, have circulated his mobile number online, while on WhatsApp, messages claiming he is a Christian in disguise have spread like wildfire.
Once easily reachable through his phone or Facebook, Syed Azmi has now gone virtually underground, but on Facebook, his friends, family and neighbours in Taman Tun Dr Ismail have been responding to the threats on his behalf.
However, the threats, most of them posted as comments to a Facebook post by Ustaz Mohd Kazim Elias, which condemned the event, are numerous and filled with hate.
“Saya dgn pandangan ustaz dan saya rasa penganjur ni jenis buta hati dan cetek ugama dan suka merosakkan ugama dan patut rejam sampai mati. He he,” said Ghas Ku.
(I agree with the ustaz and believe this organiser cannot differentiate between what is right and wrong, has a shallow understanding of religion and likes to destroy Islam and should be stoned to death.)
Ustaz Mohd Kazim Elias, who condemned the ‘I want to touch a dog’ event, has seen his Facebook page filled with numerous hate messages for the organiser.
“Meh sini aku bagi sedas pelempang baru ada akal sikit penganjur tu,” said Hafizzulnaim Haji Samsuddin.
(Let me give the organiser a beating so that he can gain some reason.)
Another Facebook user, Yusoff Hj Ashaari, said that on top of taking action against Syed Azmi, the public should find the women who posed with the dogs at the event, and pull of their scarves to see if they wore crucifixes or were concealing tattoos.
“Ustaz, this organiser really is a dog,” said Han Khalief.
In his Facebook post, the ustaz had accused the programme of being a subtle attempt to introduce “liberal” and “pluralistic” ideas among Muslims, adding that it would give way to campaigns on touching and eating pigs.
…
A WhatsApp message purportedly from the Putrajaya Religious Council has also been circulating.
It claims that Syed Azmi was a Christian who wants to spread Shia teachings and has been disguising as an ustaz for a year.
“According to a real source, he has paid off all Malay-Muslim organisations in Malaysia so that his actions or campaign could run smoothly. His purpose is to spread a new religion like the Shia but it is done subtly and he will not appear to be behind it,” it said.

No more ‘I Want To Touch A Dog’ event
ALOR SETAR: Authorities should ensure the ‘I Want To Touch A Dog’ event, which was held in Selangor, recently would not recur, as it is an insult to Islam.
Such a programme should not be allowed and the participation of Muslims in the event clearly reflected their shallow knowledge of their religion, said director of the Persatuan Jemaah Pondok-pondok Kedah, Sobri Osman.
He suggested on Wednesday that a campaign, such as “Do Not Go Near Dogs”, to be held, if the objective was to educate Muslims on the proper way of handling dogs.
He advised Muslims who attended the event, held at Central Park, 1Utama, near Petaling Jaya, to cleanse themselves should they happen to touch the dogs.

Nik Aziz: Organisers of dog-touching event have ‘worms in their heads’ http://dlvr.it/7Gl4cy
Harakah Daily reported the PAS spiritual leader as saying that such an event was in contradiction with the Syafie school of thought.
“Organising an event specifically to touch dogs is done by those who have worms in their heads,” said Nik Aziz, after launching the 24th anniversary celebrations of the Growing With Islam administration at the Kelantan Trade Centre on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Ustaz Mohd Iqbal Parjin, the cleric who participated in Sunday’s event, said that he viewed the event as an opportunity to deliver an Islamic message to Muslims and non-Muslims, but bemoaned the fact that some parties had painted his appearance at the event in a bad light.
He said that it had been misinterpreted by some quarters who accused him of encouraging the Malay community to be friendly with dogs.

After the ‘I want to touch a dog’ event, PAS is worried that soon, Muslims will be invited to engage in illicit sex.
Federal Territories PAS Youth deputy chief Nurul Islam Mohamed Yusof said his concerns were not unfounded, especially after the ‘Topless Friday’, ‘Oktoberfest’ and the dog-patting event were organised.
“We are worried that one day, someone will organise a ‘sex and condom’ campaign to promote ‘safe sex’, supposedly to avoid HIV or AIDS from spreading,” he said.

Repent, mufti tells Muslims who touched dogs http://bit.ly/1wkYXJJ
(THIS PHOTO HAS BEEN REMOVED FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE SHOWN)
Kelantan mufti Mohamad Shukri Mohamad has urged the organiser, as well as Muslim participants of the “I want to touch a dog” programme to repent.
Mohamad Shukri said this is because their actions clearly showed that they had “ridiculed” Allah’s law.
“Intentionally touching dogs is forbidden as dogs are categorised under najis mughallazah (heavy impurities) and is against the Shafie school of thought,” he said in a Sinar Harian report.
“If it was organised by a Muslim, he or she has insulted Allah’s law,” he said, adding that the incident can be considered as a “big slap” to the dakwah efforts in the country.

State Islamic authority denies approving ‘Touch-a-Dog’ event
The Selangor Mufti has denied that the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) had approved the “I Want to Touch a Dog” event yesterday..
Datuk Seri Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid said the council did not issue any approval letter to the organiser and had referred the matter to the Petaling Jaya City Council as it involved the usage of a public field.
“No approval was given on our part to hold the ‘touch-a-dog’ programme,” he said.
“The programme was being held by an individual on his own initiative,” he said.
Mohd Tamyes said MBPJ should be the one explaining the reason for allowing the event to proceed.
“We are not clear what was the justification. It is under the local government’s purview to approve, not the religious authorities,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

Ex-Perlis mufti: Shallow thinking that touching dogs is forbidden http://dlvr.it/7G9WXq
PETALING JAYA: Keeping dogs as pets in the house is discouraged in Islam but keeping them for hunting or protection is permissable, said former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.
“There are those who say it is haram (disallowed) to touch dogs because they are najis (unclean).
“However, if it is is haram to touch najis, then it is haram as well for a person to touch their own najis or that of their children or those under their care when in the process of washing/cleaning their bodies,” Mohd Asri said on his Facebook page DrMAZA.
“Then it would also be haram for those whose work involve elements of najis such as cleaning toilets or blood or (bodily) pus. The same goes for veterinarians. The conclusion derived is a shallow one. Therefore, it is not haram to touch a dog,” he added.

Scholar: ‘Petting dogs event insult to country’s ulama’ http://bit.ly/1CIXqis
(THIS PHOTO HAS BEEN REMOVED FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE SHOWN)
An Islamic scholar today decried the ‘dog patting’ event held in Petaling Jaya yesterday, saying that it had elements which insult the country’s ulama.
Johor Islamic council adviser Nooh Gadut said that touching dogs intentionally is forbidden as it is categorised under ‘najis mughallazah’ (grave impurities), and viewed seriously by the Shafie school of thought.
“It is forbidden as it is against religion, health, and culture. Don’t try to create a culture that goes against Islam and the Shafie, especially something that has elements which insults the country’s ulama,” he said in a Berita Harian report today.

HIT THE DOG CAMPAIGN
How nice if campaigns such as kiss your parents, be nice to the orphan or love your husband and wife are organised since these kind of campaigns are in a right path to what had been taught by our prophet Muhammad (PBUH) before.
The campaign ‘I Want to Touch a Dog’ was most likely unreasonable for Muslims. However, if let say the campaign is about not to abuse the animals inclusive dog, that might be ok.
Nevertheless, Islam is not a mean and hard religion. Dog can be touched only in certain situation such as for treatment or perhaps for rescue.
It is also can be touched if our body as well as the dog in dry condition since it won’t become so called najis in this situation.
However if either or is in wet condition such as sweating or due to dog’s lick, so it could be called as najis mugholazah (the hardest type of najis) and it is compulsory to wash any parts of our body or even cloth with water seven times and one of them have to be mixed with the soil (samak) .
While, dirtying yourself deliberately with that kind of najis is haram. That’s why Islam is known also with a religion that stresses on cleanliness. For example, if we find a poop(mutawasitah -the medium type of najis), then without any reason, we go and touch it, so that action can be haram and it is compulsory to clean and wash it immediately from your body. It is same with dirtying yourself with najis mugholazoh. But in this kind of case (touch a dog), if both in dry condition, it is not called as najis so it won’t be haram.
Islam allows its believers to pet a dog for certain purposes such as haunting, looking for crops, house, etc. And besides of all the purposes, so it is not encouraged by Islam and even it is also haram.
(this law is based on the discussion in Mazhab Imam Shafie which is suitable for Malaysia’s condition (waqi’) which is most of the Muslims are practicing Mazhab Shafie)
#SPREADTHEMESSAGE
How about organising programs for “touch an ayam jantan” and “touch a kucing betina” aka “touch a cock” and “touch a pussy” respectively. Should be loads of fun!
