The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH 2.0) implores the Federal Court to hear and decide the appeal of Anwar Ibrahim against his ‘Sodomy II’ conviction impartially and without fear or favour.

The charges against the Opposition Leader are politically motivated and designed to stifle democracy. This continuing persecution of Anwar Ibrahim by the ruling coalition has jeopardised the administration of justice and the existing two-party political system in Malaysia.

Democracy in Malaysia will not flourish when opposition political party leaders are harassed with archaic and unjust laws.

The Federal Court, being the last bastion in Malaysia against authoritarianism, can right these wrongs.

BERSIH 2.0 hopes that the Federal Court will rise to occasion, see the charge against Anwar Ibrahim for what it truly is and come to a just decision in accordance to the rule of law and international standards of civil and political rights.

PKR Youth launched a campaign for 14 days to show solidarity for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in sodomy II.

The highlight of the campaign with the theme “People’s Justice” will be held in Putrajaya on 28 October.

PKR Youth has slammed Umno Cheras division chief Syed Ali AlHabshee for his claim that PKR’s solidarity campaign for its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim in the face of his Sodomy II appeal ridicules the judiciary.

PKR Youth deputy chief Fahmi Fadzil said criticisms of PKR’s ‘Rakyat Hakim Negara’ (The People Are The Judge) campaign shows that Syed Ali is stuck in “ancient politics”.

“His statement shows he is stuck in ancient politics that does not question anyone.

“(It also shows) that he does not understand the Federal Constitution and existing laws,” Fahmi (right) said in a statement last night.

An Umno leader has urged the police to take stern action against the ‘Rakyat Hakim Negara’ campaign in solidarity with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The campaign, organised by PKR Youth, is in relation to Anwar’s final appeal against his sodomy conviction at the Federal Court slated for Oct 28 and 29.

Cheras Umno division leader Syed Ali Alhabshee said Anwar is not a “special individual” who is immune to the law.

“PKR Youth’s campaign is akin to belittling the judiciary and appropriate action must be taken against this. For me, the legal system in this nation is fair.

“Nobody can question the integrity of the judiciary, and all quarters must adhere to the court’s ruling,” Syed Ali added in a blog post today.
