ISIS: AN ATROCITY, A SCOURGE…

ISIS or ISIL is a Sunni Muslim killing machine that is so radical it no longer takes marching orders from Al Qaeda.

The Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (ISIL) is a splinter group of al-Qaeda that wants to set up an Islamic caliphate encompassing both Iraq and Syria.

ISIL is viewed as a terror organisation by authorities both here and abroad.

IGP dares M’sian IS members overseas to come back

June 24, 2016

Khalid Abu Bakar says police are ready for them and will not allow them to spread their ideologies here.

KUALA LUMPUR: The nation’s top cop today dared Malaysian Islamic State (IS) members to come back instead of issuing threats from afar.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said this in response to a video featuring the first known Malaysian IS fighter in Syria threatening to ensure Bukit Aman would no longer have peace.

“This is not the first video the group has released. I want to state here that the police will never ever allow IS elements to gain a footing here, or even spread their ideologies.

“Don’t try to threaten us as we are too old for this. We will not take this lightly.

“You only dare to make threats from afar, (why don’t you) come back,” Khalid told a press conference here.

He said although the police would not increase the national threat level, they would be on standby mode and continue to prepare themselves for any possible attacks.

When asked about Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay’s statement that the police were “preparing for potential attacks within six months by two sources, Khatibah Nusantara in the Philippines, and central IS”, Khalid said it was possible.

“I urge all security forces to heighten their security level, especially in public areas. This is even more important now following the release of the video which is plaguing the public’s mind.”

Police brace for attacks as IS gains strength

By ALIZA SHAH – 23 June 2016 @ 11:00 AM

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police are bracing themselves for potential lone-wolf attacks by Islamic State supporters in the country, as the terror group’s Southeast Asian branch begins to develop its strength.
.
Malaysian, Indonesian and Filipino terrorists form the IS lynchpin in this region, and are riding on aggressive terror groups to pursue the IS cause, mainly Abu Sayyaf.
.
Other terror cells are the Abu Dujana Brigade, Abi Khabib Brigade, the Jund Allah Brigade, and Abi Sadr.
.
They, like Abu Sayyaf, have also pledged their allegiance to IS and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
.
Bukit Aman’s Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division (SB-CTD) has the latest propaganda video released by IS, calling on nations to fight governments it has labelled as “Toghut” (sinners/those against the teachings of Allah). Malaysia has been singled out by the group as a nation that must be fought.
The latest video was released on Tuesday and features the first known Malaysian IS fighter in Syria, who had participated in the group’s propaganda video.
.
The graphic video showed him, along with two IS combatants, decapitating three captives. SB-CTD chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay told the New Straits Times that the man had been identified as Mohd Rafi Udin from Negri Sembilan.
.
In the video, Rafi is seen standing alongside Indonesian and Filipino IS fighters as they simultaneously behead three men, whom IS believed were spies.
.
The video also serves as a warning to governments that they said stood in the way of their “jihad”.
.

The three men in the video, who are strong personalities in IS’s Khatibah Nusantara (the Southeast Asian branch of IS in Syria), also took turns to address IS supporters in their home countries.

There will be no peace in Bukit Aman, IS warns police of attacks

13 May 2016

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia has deported three foreign suspected militants, two of them Russians allegedly involved with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and a Sri Lankan, the country’s police chief said on Friday (May 13).

The two Russian men, of Chechen origin, and the Sri Lankan were arrested in two operations in March and April, Malaysia’s inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement.

The Russians, aged 23 and 25, had previously been deported from Turkey before entering Malaysia in March.

“They had been arrested by Turkish authorities for alleged involvement in IS militant activities in Syria,” Tan Sri Khalid said, adding that the duo were deported on Friday.

A 42-year-old Sri Lankan technician who allegedly posted online death threats against the president and prime minister of the Indian Ocean island was detained on April 22.

The suspect was deported five days later, Mr Khalid said, adding that he figured on the “most-wanted” list of the Sri Lankan authorities.

Extremists pay heavy price for conspiring to carry out bomb attacks | thestar

KUALA LUMPUR: Four men, including two brothers, were sentenced to a total of 90 years in jail for promoting acts of terrorism.

Siblings Mohd Anwar Azmi, 33, and Mohd Nurkamal, 30, were sentenced to 25 years each while Izwan Shameer Suzaimi, 26, and Muhammad Luqman Hakim Abdul Aziz, 23, both received 20-year terms.

Their sentence will start from the day of their arrest on April 25 last year.

Family members of the men could not hold back their tears after the sentences were handed down under Section 130G of the Penal Code by High Court Judicial Commissioner Nordin Hassan.

The court is waiting for a probation report on the underage offender who was found guilty along with the four before meting out a sentence on May 27.

Lawyer Naizatul Zamrina Karizaman represented the siblings, who are general workers. She pleaded for leniency, saying both were fathers of two minors.

Izwan’s lawyer Faizal Rahman said his client, a trader, was the eldest of 11 children and had to care for his parents.

Selangor on highest security alert, increases surveillance for possible terrorist threats

Security measures have been increased at business outlets, malls, tourist attractions and other possible targeted areas in Selangor following an alert issued by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) after bombings in Indonesia, state police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat says.

In a media statement, Samah said district police chiefs had been instructed to increase checks and security surveillance to counter possible militant threats.

“The level of security has been increased and we will be focusing on business outlets, shopping centres, tourist attractions, entrances and exits at borders, including airports and other areas that the police deem necessary.”

He said Selangor police took the matter seriously to ensure the public’s safety and security.

“All policemen have been put on standby and on alert to counter any possible threat from militant groups.”

He urged the public to give their cooperation to the police by providing any information on suspicious activities carried out by individuals or groups with militant leaning to district police chiefs or the nearest police station.

Samah advised the public not to be panic or be anxious as the safety at the state was under control.

He also reminded the public not to spread hoax messages and news on the country’s security on any media or they would face the brunt of the law.

Police foiled suicide bombing attempt in Msia – IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have thwarted a suicide bombing attempt in the country directed by the Daesh terrorist group with the arrest of a suspect in the federal capital yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar revealed that the 28-year-old Malaysian, whose gender was not stated, was detained at the Setiawangsa LRT station.

“The suspect admitted that he planned to launch a suicide bombing attack in Malaysia after receiving a directive from Daesh in Syria,” he said in a statement today.

He said the suspect was also responsible for putting up Daesh flags in several locations in Terengganu, Perak, Selangor and Johor.

The action was purportedly aimed at telling the Malaysian government to stop operations to arrest Daesh elements in the country, said Khalid.

ISIS Suicide Bombers Confirmed To Be In Kuala Lumpur

Inspector-General of the Malaysian Police Squad, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has confirmed this rumor to online news portal Malaysiakini, saying the police memo was indeed genuine and expressed great regret over the leak; saying that the police force wanted to keep the information from the public as to not incite worry or havoc among the public.

The memo that was spread widely throughout Malaysia through a chain Whatsapp message reportedly said that the Phillipine militant group Abu Sayyaf, and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) had 18 of their suicide bombers infiltrate Kuala Lumpur and Sabah- 10 in Kuala Lumpur, and 8 in Sabah. The initial note (not to be confused with the Whatsapp chain message), instructed police to increase patrols and intelligence surveillance to protect Malaysians from these religious militants.

Tan Sri Khalid said the police are keeping track of all possible threats and were taking measures to neutralize the suicide bombers and their mission to incite pain and havoc.

“We will not allow such things (suicide bombings) to happen,” Malaysiakini quoted him saying.

8 M’sian children, aged between 3-7, in ISIS training camps in Iraq and Syria: Police

Malaysian police foil attempt by IS militants to set up child terrorist training centre

PETALING JAYA — Malaysian police have foiled an attempt by ISIS militants to set up a child terrorist training centre in the country even as eight Malaysian children are reportedly being indoctrinated in such camps in Syria and Iraq.

Bukit Aman Special Branch director Mohamad Fuzi Harun did not disclose details of the operation as it could compromise ongoing efforts against ISIS.

He said the Malaysian children in Syria and Iraq, aged between three and seven, were understood to have been taken there by their parents.

The first such case could have occurred in 2012.

He said the parents wanted to pass on militant ideology to their children through such camps.

“The children are recruited with the ultimate intention of them taking over as Daesh leaders,” he said.

Mr Mohamad Fuzi said ISIS had tutors who specialised in feeding children a tailor-made version of its ideology.

“We believe the children were given training on simple weapons handling along with religious indoctrination from a young age,” he said.

Some of the young terrorists were believed to be fighting alongside adults as they were competent in handling firearms and explosives.

Mr Mohamad Fuzi said some of the children were Indonesians recruited after the 2004 tsunami that hit Acheh.

Last month, Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter-Terrorism (E8) assistant director Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said children from South-east Asian countries were being trained at two camps in Syria.

He said the medium of instruction at one camp was Bahasa Indonesia while the other camp catered to children from Kazakhstan.

Mr Ayob Khan said he was unaware if Malaysian children were being trained at the camps. THE MALAY MAIL ONLINE

Rising concern over trend of Malaysian ISIS suicide bombers

Embedded image permalink

Two Malaysian Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) suicide bombers were killed in separate attacks in Syria and Iraq recently, heightening concerns that more Malaysians are now willing to blow themselves up for the extremist group.

Their deaths bring the total number of Malaysians with ISIS links killed in the past 18 months to 17, four of whom were known to have been suicide bombers .

The New Straits Times said that Mohd Amirul and Mohamad Syazwan were among those who had been recruited by ISIS to be trained as suicide bombers.

It noted that until recently, Malaysians and other non-Arabs who joined the extremist group rarely ended up as front-line fighters. They would usually be given menial tasks, including as cooks or cleaners.

There is rising concern about the growing trend of Malaysian suicide bombers. “Most Malaysians in Syria now, they want to die as a martyr in a suicide mission,” said Datuk Ayob Khan.

Ms Elina Noor, Institute of Strategic and International Studies assistant director of foreign policy and security studies, said “there is the view that Malaysians are more willing to carry out suicide missions because they have more to prove” to graduate from doing menial tasks. “Suicide bombings abroad represent a new threshold for Malaysian involvement,” she added.

The government has estimated that 50,000 Malaysians are ISIS sympathisers, and a Pew Research Centre report in November found that 12 per cent of Muslims here viewed the militant group that has taken control of large areas of Syria and Iraq favourably.

Malaysian children being trained overseas by Islamic State: Official

Embedded image permalink

KUALA LUMPUR: Intelligence authorities revealed that eight Malaysian children were being trained to become Islamic State (IS) fighters, local media reported on Tuesday (Jan 12).

Investigations are continuing into details of the training camps, which are believed to be in Syria and Iraq, Bukit Aman Special Branch director Mohamad Fuzi Harun told reporters at a news conference in Kuala Lumpur.

“These children were brought in to the war-torn countries by their parents, who are raising them to be IS fighters,” he was reported as saying by The Star.

He added that 47 Malaysians had joined Islamic State, including 12 women, and that authorities were actively attempting to bring them home.

“But they have refused to come back. Their ultimate goal is to fight and die as martyrs,” he said.

Last month, Malaysian police warned that children as young as two were being trained overseas to become the next generation of terrorists.

Boy holds knife to woman to prove IS ‘membership’

KUALA LUMPUR: A 16-year-old boy, brainwashed into believing the Islamic State ideology, held a woman at knife-point at a supermarket in Sungei Petani.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the teenager, who was clad in IS attire, was arrested minutes later at 8.30pm on Monday.

“He is being detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma).

“Investigations revealed that he was influenced by the IS movement through social media and wanted to prove that he was capable of such acts by threatening the woman,” Khalid told a press conference at Bukit Aman on Tuesday.

Khalid added that the boy was brainwashed by IS through emails and social media.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Malaysians suicide bombers blew themselves up, killing more than 30 others during their assigned missions in Syria and Iraq last week.

The New Straits Times learnt that Terengganu-born Mohd Amirul
Ahmad Rahim set off the bombs that he had on him and in the car he was in during clashes at the Islamic State’s stronghold of Raqqa on Dec 29.

Sources told the NST that Amirul, 26, had left his family in Malaysia for Syria in October 2014 to be part of the global terrorist group.

Amirul, who went by the nom de guerre Abu Uqashah Malizi, died on the day IS launched an offensive on the 44th Syrian Democratic Forces coalition, near Ain Issa, which saw 21 Kurdish fighters killed.

IS members from Malaysia serving in Syria and Iraq would usually have “Malizi” attached to their nom de guerre.

Amirul’s death came five days before another Malaysian blew himself up in Tikrit, Iraq.

It was learnt that Mohamad Syazwan Mohd Salim, who carried out his mission on the night of Jan 3, was one of seven suicide bombers who had made their way to a police training centre at Speicher military base, some 160 km, north of Baghdad.

They had targeted a large group of police forces from the northern province of Nineveh, who were undergoing training.

It is understood that Shazwan, along with the other bombers, were shot by their targets. The source said the 31-year-old was among those who detonated their suicide vests that killed 12 policemen, including three officers.

Twenty others were wounded.

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s police said on Saturday that it had arrested five people, including a European employed as a teacher, on suspicion of links with militant groups like the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

Malaysia is on heightened alert after reports on Friday that ten Syrians linked to Islamic State entered neighbouring Thailand in October to attack Russian interests.

Among them was a 44-year-old European who was employed as a temporary teacher in the state of Penang, and had links with al-Qaeda and allegedly participated in militant activities in Afghanistan and Bosnia, the police said.

Three other suspects – a 31-year-old Indonesian man, a Malaysian and a Bangladeshi – were part of a cell linked to the Islamic State (IS) group and are were tasked with recruiting volunteers to take part in militant activities overseas.

11 per cent of Malaysians are IS symphatisers, poll shows

Embedded image permalink

KUALA LUMPUR — Over one in ten people in Malaysia hold favourable views of the Islamic State (IS) despite atrocities committed, a Pew Research Centre study has shown.

The findings come at a time when Malaysia is grappling with the spread of IS ideology among locals, with increasing arrests reported over suspected links to the terrorist group that claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks in Paris, France this month.

In the study of Muslims’ attitude towards IS, which the Pew Research Centre gleaned from its 2015 Global Attitudes survey, support level for the group in Malaysia was tied for second place with Senegal among 11 nations with significant Muslim populations polled.

A quarter of respondents here also said they “don’t know” how they viewed the IS, despite Putrajaya declaring the group to be a terrorist organisation.

A positive conclusion from the survey, however, is that the majority of respondents viewed IS dimly.

The findings will be of concern to local authorities working to contain the dissemination of IS propaganda on social networks, the primary hunting ground of recruiters working for the terrorist group.

Anxiety over the advance of the IS and other militant groups also took centre stage during the ongoing Asean Summit, where both Prime Minister Najib Razak and US President Barack Obama addressed the topic at length.

The lack of technical expertise to devise bombs serves as a handicap to locals affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) militants from launching attacks in the country.

KUALA LUMPUR – The two civil servants who were among eight suspected militants arrested in Malaysia were army commandos based in a camp in Malacca.

Sources told The Star newspaper that the two 28-year-old army commandos were responsible for spreading the ideology of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) among fellow soldiers.

“Authorities believe the two men are actively recruiting for IS. They are also closely connected to two other commandos arrested on Aug 19 for promoting the ideology of the terror group.

“They were detained while on operation in Perak,” a source was quoted as saying.

It was learnt that the soldiers wanted to go to Syria eventually, according to the report.

“Intercepted messages among the soldiers revealed that they were also eager to use their skills in battle,” another source said.

The other six detained were members of the Tandzim Al-Qaeda group.

The suspects, aged between 22 and 36, were detained in simultaneous swoops in Selangor, Perak and Johor by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division on Friday.

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – The Malaysian government may achieve its aim of zero terrorism in Malaysia once the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) comes into effect, said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Friday (Oct 2).

Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid said Malaysians returning for recruitment and other terror-related activities would be identified upon arrival based on intelligence exchanges.

“Thanks to the efforts taken by police, the number of potential terrorists from Malaysia is down. I can tell you 100 per cent of terrorists and potential terrorists who have returned to Malaysia have been detained,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference after chairing the Special Asean Ministerial Meeting on the Rise of Radicalisation and Violent Extremism in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, he said he hopes a zero terrorism level can be reached once Pota is enforced.

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – The Malaysian police has said there is no cause for alarm over the recent sightings of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) flags in parts of Malaysia .

The flags were reportedly seen in several states, including Perak, Terengganu, Kedah and Selangor some two weeks ago.

Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division head Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ayub Khan said the sightings of the flags were no cause for concern as there was no imminent threat.

He added that the police was currently investigating who put up the flags.

From janitors to snipers, Malaysians move up in Islamic State

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 — Malaysians are climbing the ladder in the Islamic State (IS) terror network as they leave janitorial jobs to become suicide bombers and snipers, police say.

Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division head Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ayub Khan told local daily The Star that Malaysians were being trained by the terror group to carry out special missions in a bid to reclaim territory in Iraq that government forces had taken over.

“Our intelligence show that they are relying more on Malaysians now to carry out strike missions against several key structures in Iraq,” Ayub was quoted saying.

Ayub said this came to light after three Malaysians who recently died in Iraq were believed to be on special ops missions, one of whom was a 43-year-old man named Zid Saharani Mohamed Esa who was killed in a clash with Iraqi forces in Bayji, Iraq, last August.

“We believe he was one of the snipers assigned to take out targets at a Iraqi government structure in Bayji,” he said.

The two others killed separately in Iraq last month — Muhammad Syazani Mohd Salim, 28, and Fadzly Ariff Zainal Ariff, 31 — were believed to be part of an IS infantry and trained for suicide bombing respectively, according to Ayub.

The Star quoted Ayub as saying that the police estimated that 69 Malaysians have joined the IS in Syria.

Fourteen Malaysians fighting alongside the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (Isis) have been killed in the two countries, The Star reports.

The daily said Malaysians who joined the militant group have become snipers and suicide bombers in Iraq, a boost from being relegated to cleaning and guarding camps as reported earlier.

Quoting Bukit Aman’s special branch counter terrorism division head Datuk Ayub Khan, the paper said some Malaysians carry out special missions all over Iraq on behalf of the terror group.

“The presence of Isis in Syria is quite solid but the group is losing control over Iraq as many territories have fallen back to Iraqi government forces.

“Our intelligence shows that they are relying more on Malaysians now to carry out strike missions against several key structures in Iraq,” he told The Star.

Ayub said the Malaysians were picked from the Khatibah Nusantara cell, consisting of Malay-speaking members, to join the special ops squads.

The Star said the latest development was revealed due to the deaths of three Malaysians in Iraq, Zid Saharani Mohamed Esa, Muhamad Syazani Mohd Salim, and Fadzly Ariff Zainal Ariff.

Isis fighters to Indonesia come through Malaysia, says report

Islamic State (Isis) sympathisers are being sent to Indonesia through Malaysia, Australia’s ABC News reported today.

Quoting Indonesia’s head of national counter-terrorism agency, Saud Usman Nasution, the news agency said foreign Isis fighters were working with people smugglers and “asylum seeker” networks.

He said the foreigners arrive in Malaysia first before heading to Sumatra and are then taken to a suspected training ground for Isis fighters in Poso, central Sulawesi.

“We see that some foreign terrorist fighters from overseas come to Indonesia.

“First they leave Malaysia and head for Pekanbaru (Sumatra) to Puncak (West Java) – it’s all facilitated by asylum seeker networks,. Then from Puncak they would leave to Makassar and Poso, with facilitation from the Isis network.

“So we need to stay vigilant, more so because there is information that in Malaysia there are a lot of foreign terrorist fighters there who are about to be deployed – we don’t know where to – under the Isis network,” he told ABC News.

Saud Usman also described the Isis threat against Indonesia as “significantly serious” as there were groups that sought “revenge” for what they saw as injustice by the West against Muslims.

Police counter-terrorism unit says beefing up security after IS threatens attack on Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Security measures are being stepped up in public places and foreign diplomatic missions in Malaysia in the wake of threats by global terror group Islamic State to launch attacks here and other countries, the police said today.

The police intelligence agency’s counter-terrorism unit said it was aware that IS has called on its followers worldwide to attack several nations, including Malaysia, through its online magazine Dabiq.

“PDRM has and will continue to act to step up security in all places with key assets to the country, including foreign embassies and public places,” Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, assistant director of E8, the counter-terrorism unit in the police Special Branch, said in a short statement.

Earlier today, Japan ordered its embassies worldwide to raise their security alert after IS highlighted its missions in Indonesia, Malaysia and Bosnia-Herzegovina were part of a broader threat.

The move comes about eight months after IS claimed credit for beheading two Japanese hostages — war correspondent Kenji Goto and his friend Haruna Yukawa — in Syria and amid anxiety in Japan over impending legislation that critics fear could drag the officially pacifist country into wars overseas, news wire service AFP reported.

Despite being a Muslim nation, Malaysia too has not been spared from threats of attacks by IS cell groups, whose members may even be locals.

Tokyo has ordered all diplomatic offices abroad to beef up security after the Islamic State militant group called on its supporters to attack Japanese missions in Indonesia, Malaysia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Friday.

The militant group issued the message in the latest edition of Dabiq, its English-language magazine whose copies are circulated over the Internet.

Japanese expats in the three countries are also urged to be conscious about their safety, Suga added.

“We are aware that such an article has been carried (in the magazine). We are cooperating with host countries to guard the overseas government offices,” Suga said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 ― A youth was sentenced today to one-year imprisonment for owning publications about the Islamic State (IS), the first such case in Malaysia under a new anti-terrorism provision.

Nazirul Abidin Thalha, 24, pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code over the download of 15 of such publications about the militant group, which is involved in a conflict in Syria, into his smartphone.

Under this new anti-terrorism provision that was gazetted this June, those in possession of any items associated with any terrorist groups or the commission of a terrorist act are liable to a maximum seven-year jail term, or a fine and forfeiture of rights over the publications.

Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Kamardin Hashim handed the one-year jail term which will run from the day of Nazirul’s arrest on July 2 this year.

The unemployed youth has been in detention since his arrest, by way of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

Police: IS militants now planning expat abductions and bank heists

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 — Islamic State (IS) sympathisers are plotting the kidnap of high-profile figures including foreigners and bank robberies to fund their activities, according to the police today.

Among areas that are said to be targeted by the militants are business centres with a high number of expatriates as well as government offices in Putrajaya.

The police further warned that the groups are said to be planning raids on police and military armouries in order to secure the weapons needed for their plots, reminiscent of the al-Maunah militants in 2000.

“A study showed that the IS struggle has passed the first level of recruitment and training of new members, and is now entering the second level (kidnapping and robbery),” Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa was quoted as saying by national news agency Bernama.

12 militant suspects flew under the radar

“The 12 men who were arrested are from a new cell. There is no (criminal) record on any of them and they flew under our radar,” a senior counter-terrorism source told The Straits Times.

“And if there is no (intelligence) on such militants, how are we going to disrupt them? We need to broaden our intelligence collection,” said the source.

On : pulling out all the stops to hunt bomb plotters

MALAYSIA will use all measures at its disposal, including intercepting phone messages, as it tries to nail down the remaining members of a terror cell that plotted to bomb strategic targets in the Klang Valley.

The capital city has been put on heightened security alert since 12 men linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) were nabbed with large amounts of explosive materials at the weekend.

Analysts say ISIS is keen to recruit military and civil service personnel because they have easy access to firearms and ammunition, classified information as well as entry to high-security areas like Parliament.

ISIS also appears to appeal to professionals and administrators, whom it needs to help achieve its goal of setting up an Islamic state.

Calling this worrying, Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna, head of policy studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, said: “My concern is twofold: First, ISIS seems to be succeeding in attracting relatively qualified people, and second, such educated people are buying into ISIS’ religiously legitimated vision enough to join.”

Major: IS considers M’sia ‘infidel’ nation

Islamic State (IS) followers consider Malaysia an “infidel” nation because the Federal Constitution does not enforce Islam in total and contains laws from the colonial era.

Furthermore, they believe that democracy is man made and not a concept derived from divine revelation.

Based on the above, Armed Forces Syariah law corp official Major Nadzri Musman said IS considers that violence is permitted to topple the Malaysian government.

According to Ismaweb, he was speaking at a ceramah in Perak.

Nadzri said the IS mindset is to brand all those who are not involved in their struggle as well as those who practice secularism and democracy as infidels.

“It is pointless for Muslims to fight alongside IS because it is contrary to syarak (rules that govern Islam) and their deaths cannot be considered as an act of martyrdom,” he said.

He also pointed out that slaughtering hostages is cruel and not endorsed by Islam.

“They kill anyone who is suspected of not supporting them, including journalists and human rights activists,” he said.

Therefore, Nadzri told those present not to go overboard in understanding the concept of jihad in Islam.

Suspected militants nabbed while they were making bombs

KUALA LUMPUR: They tested bombs at the foothills of a mountain and were planning to test a bigger bomb deep in the jungle before unleashing their terror in the Klang Valley.

The IS-inspired militants never got to create the chaos they had wanted to.

Police arrested 12 suspected militants just as they were mixing chemicals to make the explosives. The militants were said to have enough material to make a bomb with a 500m blast radius.

Bukit Aman’s Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division swooped in and detained 11 of the men at the foothills of Hutan Lipur Gunung Nuang in Hulu Langat on Saturday, while they were mixing the chemicals to make the improvised explosive devices (IED).

This was followed by the arrest of the cell’s senior leader at a house in Cheras yesterday.

“Those arrested at Gunung Nuang had planned to test the IEDs on top of the mountain,” said a source.

“The authorities believe they had already tested a few smaller explosives at the foothills.

“Once their tests were successful, the militants were planning to carry out the attacks soon,” the source added.

IGP: 12 arrested, explosives seized in two-day crackdown on IS plot

PETALING JAYA: The police have arrested 12 suspects in a crackdown on an Islamic State(IS)-linked plot to conduct attacks on targets around the Klang Valley, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

“On Saturday and Sunday the Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division in a operation in Hulu Langat, Selangor and Cheras arrested members of a terror cell suspected to have links to the Islamic State.

“At least 12 men, aged between 17 and 41-years-old were arrested,” said Khalid in a press statement on Sunday.

He said the plot was to launch attacks on strategic and high-value targets in the Klang Valley.

“The plan was a response to a call by the IS central leadership in Syria which encourages attacks on high-value targets of importance to secular Islamic nations which they claim to be their enemies,” said Khalid.

detains 95 for links to : Home Minister Zahid

Apr 16, 2015 7:48 PM

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has detained 95 people with suspected links to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, Bernama reported on Thursday, citing Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The figure was up from 93 when an anti-terrorism bill was tabled on March 30, Mr Zahid said, adding that police were monitoring individuals or groups that may be connected with ISIS through social media or other avenues.

“We send out our intelligence team to monitor their activities … we cannot simply arrest them without investigating,” he said after attending the Ministry’s 2014 Excellent Service Awards, on Thursday.

using Facebook for recruitment across Malaysia: Police. reports

KUALA LUMPUR: A clip of two Malaysians in a beheading video linked to the Islamic State (IS) got the nation talking in February. Many wondered how these men and dozens of others were recruited to join a militant group all the way in Syria. The answer – through social media.

On Feb 3, one of two men in the video posted a Facebook status in which he declared his love for jihad and praised Facebook for being the place it began. Abu Hamzah Al Fateh wrote that someone had reached out to him through the social network, the same way police say Islamic State recruiters have targeted dozens of Malaysians.

Ayob Khan, Principal Assistant Director of the Counter Terrorism Division, Royal Malaysian Police, told Channel NewsAsia social media has taken the place of religious classes in recruitment efforts for the IS.

“Last time, most of them recruited through special religious classes that you’d have to attend physically. But now, maybe you go to Facebook or surf the Internet for one hour, and then you are influenced by this ideology – you want to go to Syria to fight with the Islamic State. So that’s why we have a big problem”.

MALACCA: Police have tightened security at their federal headquarters in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur, and all stations nationwide along with increased patrols at armouries as a precaution against attacks.

The heightened security came about after a man tried to enter an army camp in Gerik, Perak, and made threats after he was stopped by the sentries there.

It also came in the wake of 70 people, including armed forces personnel, being found by police to have ties with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

Cops arrest two Iraqis from IS terror cell

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have foiled an attempt by an Islamic State terror cell to attack the Saudi Arabia and Qatar embassies with the arrest of two Iraqi nationals.

Sources said the two men were detained by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division at a shopping mall in Jalan Ampang at about 7pm on Thursday.

“They were planning to attack the embassies on March 31 at the behest of IS. They threatened two officials from the embassies to meet their demands or suffer the consequences of an attack,” a source told The Star yesterday.

Intelligence sources did not disclose what the demands were but said the threat of an attack on the embassies was still being investigated. It is learnt that the Counter Terrorism Division had monitored the two men since March 10.

“They were staying in a few places in Selangor and Johor,” another source said.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said initial Investigations revealed that the suspects had issued the threats to the embassies’ officials.

“They even demanded RM6,000 if the officials wanted more information on the attack,” he said when contacted.

1:05 PM, March 19, 2015

KUALA LUMPUR — Islamic militant groups, including the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), are targeting students in institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, a report said today (March 19).

Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay was quoted by the New Straits Times (NST) as saying 61 Malaysians have been identified as being involved in three groups known as Jabhat A-Nusra, Ajnad Al-Sham and ISIS.

He said these groups would not spare young Malaysians, adding that police were trying to educate students by telling them that joining them was a “one-way ticket”.

“There is no way back unless they managed to get the help of the police here,” the NST quoted him as saying at a briefing on militancy at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in Nilai, Negri Sembilan.

A greater concern for the police was what these recruits would do upon returning to Malaysia.

“We are worried that they may bring back the ideologies and become a threat to the public here,” he said.

Malaysia Airlines website hacked with Error 404 by Cyber Caliphate. More to come:

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) website was inaccessible this morning after hackers defaced the airline’s portal and left what purportedly is an Islamic State message.

The message reads “ISIS will prevail”, raising concerns the hacking may be linked to the global terrorist network.

The hackers signed off as “Cyber Caliphate” and, strangely, asked users to follow them by subscribing to Twitter handlers @UMG_Chris and @UMGRobert, who are corporate leaders at UMG gaming.

However, a check by Malaysiakini showed that there are several variants of the defaced website served to users, including one that reads “Lizard Squad will prevail”.

The variants carried the same image of a lizard in tuxedo and smoking a pipe.

Lizard Squad is a prominent hacking group that was responsible for several incidents of hacking  last year, including against Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox servers.

Malaysians thronging towards IS, militant groups in Syria, jihadist claims

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11— Hundreds of Malaysians have left the country to join the on-going sectarian war in Syria and more are expected to follow suit, a local jihadist has alleged.

Calling himself “Salman Rahim”, the jihadist told the News Sunday Times in a series of interviews through Facebook that Malaysian fighters engaged in combat there have also given up hope of ever coming home and are willing to die fighting for the cause.

“More and more are also keen to join us in Syria. Personally, I believe that among the factors contributing to this is the realisation of what is happening to our oppressed Muslim brothers and sisters in Syria,” he was quoted by NST as saying.

“As it is, there are hundreds of Malaysians in Syria and Iraq and I am confident that the number will grow,” Salman added.

He said that Malaysian fighters in Syria and Iraq were not only with the Islamic State (IS), but were also allied with other jihadist groups.

Growing trend? M’sians taking up to $7.5k loans to join terror group Isis

To date, at least 59 Malaysians are officially known to have joined Isis.

More than 65 have been arrested by police either on their way to Syria and Iraq or on their way back since the start of last year.

Officials say some M’sians are taking bank loans up to $7.5k to join terror group Isis

Some Malaysians have gone to the extent of taking personal loans from banks and moneylenders in order to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) in the Middle East.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) quoted Malaysian counter-terrorism officials as saying the loans were taken to fund passage and living expenses in Syria and Iraq.

The official said:

“At least two women have taken personal loans to pay for their passage to Syria to join Isis and also to fund their living expenses there.
“One woman took a RM20,000 (S$7,500) personal loan from RHB Bank while the other borrowed RM6,000 from a licensed moneylender.”

SCMP reported that the emerging trend comes after an Isis cell leader in Malaysia urged followers to apply for the loans to help them join the fight in the Middle East.

Police have arrested numerous Isis supporters and sympathisers.

But it seems Malaysians have not been discouraged from attempting to join up with Isis.

The official told SCMP:

“There are no indications that these two women will return to Malaysia.
“The chances of that is very slim, hence the loan is not likely to be repaid.”

“Although this is just a shop which sells T-shirts, flags and caps, but these items are militant-themed and bear the symbols of such group.

“It is tantamount to promoting terrorism and the police in the area should have taken action or alerted Bukit Aman (Federal police),” the source said.

Probe into souvenir shop with a militant theme

PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman is investigating a shop reportedly selling militant-themed merchandise in Bandar Baru Bangi.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said police would probe whether profits from the business were being used to fund terror activities.

“We will ascertain if there is any connection with the shop to known militant groups, especially Islamic State,” he said in an interview yesterday.

He said police were taking the matter seriously as the shop was also a form of propaganda for the militant group.

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – A 27-year-old woman, who was one of the two latest people arrested for suspected links to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), married one of its fighters over Skype.

“We believe that she was first attracted to IS after watching its propaganda video on YouTube in November,” said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

“She then got to know the North African fighter and eventually married him. He managed to persuade her to join him in Syria.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Police nabbed two higher learning institution students who were about to leave for Syria to join Islamic State group last month.

The suspects, including a 27-year-old woman who got married to a IS fighter through Skype, were detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) by Special Branch’s Counter-Terrorism Division (SB-CTD) operatives.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the female suspect, who studies at a private institution in the Klang Valley, was nabbed on Dec 24.

He said initial investigations revealed that the woman was influenced to sympathise with IS struggle after watching the group’s propaganda video on YouTube.

The second suspect, a 22-year-old male student of a public university in Perlis, was arrested in KLIA on Dec 28.

Khalid said initial investigations revealed that the suspect, who was also influenced after watching the group’s videos on YouTube, has planned to involve in a suicide mission in Syria.

IS fighters taking out personal loans

By FARRAH NAZ KARIM AND HARIZ MOHD – 20 December 2014 @ 8:12 AM

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians heading for Syria and Iraq to fight with the Islamic State have been taking out bank loans to fund their journey and life there.

Sources from Bukit Aman told the New Straits Times that investigation papers on at least five Malaysian fighters, who were stopped from going over, showed that they had not only disposed of most of their properties, but had also applied for loans, some up to more than RM100,000.

The Special Branch’s Counter- Terrorism Division (SB-CTD), meanwhile, said in cutting this lifeline for Malaysians headed for these countries, it would alert banks to slam the door on those they had strong grounds to believe were IS members sourcing for funds.

It has emerged that the 30-year-old former National Service trainer, who was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Wednesday, had taken out a RM20,00 loan.

It is understood that a woman, who was arrested as she was leaving the country for Syria, was found to have secured a loan amounting to no less than RM100,000 from a local bank.

SB-CTD principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said police had found that this method of raising funds was fast becoming a trend among IS members here.

Cops launch probe into whether ex-trainer influenced others at national service camps

PETALING JAYA, Dec 19 — A full-scale investigation has been launched by the police’s Counter Terrorism Unit to find out if the man arrested for trying to join the Islamic State (IS) terror group had influenced National Service (NS) trainees while he was a trainer in Pahang.

Police are also looking into whether there are other militant elements in NS camps.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said investigations were focused on ascertaining if the suspect had influenced anyone in the camps he had served in to join IS, especially the trainees under his supervision.

Khalid said the suspect was attached with the NS Training Department in Kuantan, Pahang, as a trainer and resigned last year.

“We are establishing if he played a role or attempted to recruit his co-trainers and staff. There is a possibility that he had shared his ideology with the trainees,” he said.

Khalid said police were not only checking the NS camp in Kuantan, but also other camps throughout the country.

He said the suspect, who was detained on Wednesday morning by officers from the Counter Terrorism Unit at KL International Airport, had constantly communicated with Kedah-born IS militant Md Lofti Mod Ariffin, who was killed in Syria on Sept 14.

Cops nab suspected militant at KLIA

KUALA LUMPUR: Just as the hostage crisis in Australia ended, Bukit Aman arrested a 30-year-old former National Service trainer linked to the Islamic State terror group.

Sources revealed that the man, who hailed from Terengganu, was tasked by a local militant group to open a new safe passage for Malaysian fighters to head to Syria.

“The authorities believe that this suspect wanted to use one of the countries in South-East Asia as a transit point for Malaysian militants before going to Syria.

“This move is seen as a new way to evade detection given a spate of arrests of militants this year,” a source said.

After careful surveillance, Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division personnel were waiting at KL International Airport for the suspect and detained him at about 5.30am yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Many civil servants, including armed forces personnel, scholars from local universities and those from government departments and agencies, are believed to be involved in the operations in Malaysia of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

A source described the involvement of the civil servants as “serious”, saying that the police were on their trail.

Since April this year, at least 10 civil servants have been detected to be directly or indirectly involved with the activities of the terror group, especially in terms of funding and recruitment among Malaysians.

“The number of civil servants who are sympathetic to the militant cause is baffling,” the source said.

One of the most high-profile civil servants detained this year was a 37-year-old Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry senior assistant director.

Arrested on suspicion of recruiting members into the ISIS, he had been away from work for almost a year, supposedly to take care of his mother.

However, the police believed that he had been in southern Philippines meeting up with Malaysian militants on the run, including former Universiti Malaya lecturer Mahmud Ahmad (also known as Abu Handzalah) and sundry shop owner Mohd Najib Husen, both 36.

They are believed to be leaders of a local militant group that trains members to fight in Syria and Iraq.

The third man is former Selayang Municipal Council employee Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee, 39, also known as Abu Nur.

Worrying trend of civil servants supporting IS cause

By G. Prakash and Ushar Daniele
Published: December 3, 2014 06:54 AM

PETALING JAYA, Dec 3 — Two more civil servants who were channeling funds to the Islamic State (IS) have been arrested as police express worry over militant sympathisers in the civil service.

Police are working to establish the extent of IS influence among civil servants as so far six government officers had joined, planned or had sent money to the extremist outfit which controls chunks of territories in both Iraq and Syria.

A police source said in six months, four civil servants were arrested in the Klang Valley and Kedah, and there is a possibility of others in the service being involved.

“We are now investigating the extent of involvement of civil servants in IS activities in the country and abroad,” the source said.

“There is a possibility those detained had influenced others, including their colleagues, to join their cause and this is a worrying trend.”

The latest arrest came when the Bukit Aman’s Counter-Terrorism Unit conducted an operation in Kuala Lumpur and Kedah on Nov 27 and 28.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police picked up three men in separate locations.

“Two of them, aged 23 and 28, work at a government agency in Kuala Lumpur. They are suspected to have channeled funds to new recruits who are planning to travel to Syria to fight alongside IS.”

Investigations revealed the third suspect, aged 36, joined IS last year and had spent four months in Syria before returning to Malaysia on April 8.

He said the trio were being detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma).

Isis fighters returning to spread beliefs in Malaysia, says Wan Junaidi

Malaysians returning from fighting with militant groups like Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) came home to spread their terrorist ideologies here, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said today.

He said police checks showed that those who returned were not driven by disillusionment or the desire to surrender to the Malaysian authorities.

“The police are monitoring and they know, those who opted to return are doing so because they want to influence other Malaysians to join their cause, regardless if they are Muslims or not,” he told Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh (BN-Putatan).

To date, Wan Junaidi said 39 Malaysians had been identified as being involved with the terror group whose aim is to set up an Islamic caliphate in the region, adding that the police were monitoring their activities.

He said all the 39 were from Peninsular Malaysia.

Not easy to identify potential Isis member, says Jamil Khir

Identifying Isis members in the country is not easy as the militant movement uses an indirect approach to get close to potential members and recruiting them, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

“These people use an indirect approach. For example, as it takes a long time to influence people, they start off by befriending you. In cases involving students, they asked for their hands in marriage.

“At this stage, they could not be considered members until they declare themselves as Isis fighters,” he said.

However, Jamil Khir said the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) was currently working with other ministries, such as the Home Ministry, Defence Ministry and Foreign Ministry, to monitor Isis’s influence in the country.

Press Digest – Non-Muslims warned of IS threat

PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ayob Khan reminds non-Muslims to take the threats posted by Islamic State (IS) seriously as IS followers have been imbued with the idea that their main enemies are non-Muslims, followed by Muslims who do not agree with their doctrines.

In an interview with Oriental Daily News published today, Ayob said Chinese or Indians in Malaysia should not ignore what is happening in Syria, thinking IS concerns only Muslims and has nothing to do with them.

He said based on intelligence that he obtained, IS is strengthening and recruiting Malaysians who will be brought to Syria to be trained to fight as jihadists there before they are sent back to Malaysia to fight against the government by way of a “jihad”.

He said jihadists who return from Syria are extreme in their thinking, with no tolerance for differing ideologies and will get rid of non-Muslims including Christians, Hindus and Buddhists, regardless whether they are Chinese or Indians.

Not only that, they will also kill moderate Muslims who do not agree with what they do, said Ayob.

Another 13 Malaysians arrested for militant activities

Varsities monitor students to prevent militancy Local universities say students enticed to join miltants through...

Local universities are constantly monitoring students’ activities to ensure their students are not influenced by unhealthy elements, including being recruited by militant groups in countries of conflict.

President of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Rais Yatim said the management and staff of the university’s security division conducted checks on students’ background so that they were not susceptible to groups professing the ‘jihad’.

He proposed that other public and private institutions of higher learning take similar precautionary measure to curb the increasingly aggressive actions of militant groups in enticing the young through Facebook.

“The universities cannot remain silent, as anything unforeseen may happen. This is a great security challenge as idealism is an issue which is easily penetrated in universities,” said Rais in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Prof Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar said the university would also monitor developments relating to the group and was prepared to cooperate with the authorities at any time.

Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Prof Dr Raduan Che Rose said the university also monitored its students’ movements and activities.

A 14-year-old boy in Malaysia was targeted by recruiters to fight alongside militants in Syria. Others were also targeted.

The recruitment drive for all the youths were operated via Facebook. The same method is also used to lure college and university students from Malaysia. He is an SMK (national secondary school) student.

14-year-old boy in Malaysia targeted by recruiters to fight alongside militants in Syria

PETALING JAYA — In a shocking revelation, police confirmed a 14-year-old boy has been targeted by recruiters to fight alongside militants in Syria.

Bukit Aman’s special branch counter terrorism division said the student was being brainwashed by a Malaysian recruiter in Syria, via social networking site Facebook, to join the Islamic State (IS).

Its principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said: “We found that among those targeted by the recruiter was a Form Two student. The recruiter was communicating with this boy through Facebook, coaxing him to join IS in the war-torn country (Syria).”

He said several other teenagers are also being lured to fight Syrian authorities there.

Kelantan Mufti: Malaysians who die fighting for IS are not martyrs

KOTA BARU: The Malaysians who went to the Middle East to fight and die for the cause of Islam did not die as martyrs but is a common death and tantamount to meaningless death, said Kelantan Mufti Dato Muhamad Shukri Muhamad.

He added that while many believed that going to another country to die in the name of Islam, whether or not a person who died a martyr is determined by the country they were killed in.

“In my opinion when a person joins an extremist group like Islamic State (IS) and died while fighting for such groups had a common death like any other accidents,” he told reporters at the sidelines of the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly meeting here on Tuesday.

Malaysian girls not spared, now militant groups eyeing school children

The three militant groups in Syria with Malaysian involvement were the Islamic State (IS), Jabhat Al Nusra and Ajnad Al Sham.

KUALA LUMPUR: The effort to lure Malaysian girls to join militant groups is taking an aggressive turn with schoolchildren being targeted in the “recruitment” drive.

Principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division of the Special Branch at Bukit Aman, SAC Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the individual concerned was actively recruiting this group via Facebook as they were young and easily misled.

“The trend to recruit youngsters between the ages of 15 and 30 through Facebook is worrying.

“Besides schoolchildren, students of private and public higher learning institutions with family and educational problems, government and private sector employees as well as businessmen are being coaxed to join militant groups,” he said when contacted by Bernama here on Monday.

SAC Ayob added that all parties, especially parents, teachers and employers, should be aware of this recruitment activities and inform the police should they come across anyone with extremist tendencies.

Cops confirm 20-year-old woman ran off to join Malaysian jihadists in Syria: KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 — Police hav…

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 — Police have confirmed that former Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor (KUIS) student, Syamimi Faiqah left for Syria on October 4 and is believed will join militants of the Islamic State (IS) there.

Federal Police Special Branch principal assistant director (Counter-Terrorism Division) SAC Datuk Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay said Syamimi, 20, left from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 11.55pm on that day.

“Based on the latest information available, Syamimi is now believed to be at the Turkey-Syria border and is waiting to slip into Syria. When she arrived at Istanbul airport, there were already two individuals waiting for her to bring her to Syria overland through the Hatay province (in Turkey).

“Once she reaches the border area, a syndicate will smuggle her into Syria,” he told Bernama today.

A local daily today reported that Syamimi had run off to Syria to marry an IS militant known as Akel Zainal, whom she got to know via Facebook.

Akel Zainal is understood to be a former member of a local rock group which was famous in the 1990s and is now in Syria to fight for IS.

Ayub said Akel is believed to be trying to entice women in particular Malay girls from local higher learning institution to join IS militants.

Bukit Bintang blast: Why dismiss terrorism?

October 10, 2014

Malaysia, for its relative peace, has not had a spotless reputation when it comes to terrorism.

The authorities were quick to say the bombing had its cause in a gangland feud. That certainly is a plausible cause, but why dismiss the possibility of a terrorist attack outright?

Just last August, Malaysians who had thought themselves safe from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria found themselves shocked by news reports that its operatives had been among us all this while. It was revealed that they had plotted to attack a Carlsberg factory and, yes, several nightclubs.

Let us remember that terrorism is not an entirely alien concept in our beautiful nation. Terrorism, defined as the use of violence and intimidation to pursue political aims, is far more insidious than the wholesale slaughter of innocents on the street. Indeed, terrorism by the definition above reared it’s head in Malaysia in 2010, when a church was fire bombed in the wee hours of the morning as the start of a spree of attacks on houses of worship and race-instigated threats.

That spate of attacks was brought on by the Allah issue, a hot button topic that persists till today.

There is of course no reason to connect Thursday’s bombing to the Allah issue, but there is a train of thought one may pursue: the controversy with Oktoberfest. With “religious authorities” opining back and forth about the sinful nature of the German celebration, it’s not implausible that someone took it upon himself to teach the sinners a lesson by attacking one of their hallowed halls of vice, this time with a grenade.

Or perhaps the collaborators not arrested in August perceived this as the perfect time to pursue their nefarious agenda, with sentiments so clearly on their side being expressed, and rose to the opportunity presented to them by the controversy.

ISIS IS HERE! M’sians worried KL bomb blast the work of Muslim extremists

The timing of today’s bomb blast in front of a pub along Jalan Bukit Bintang has not escaped the attention of Malaysians on social media, many of whom were quick to associate the explosion with the heated debate over the “Oktoberfest” beer festival.

Even as police suspect gangsters to be behind the blast which killed one and injured 13 others, Internet users speculated that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) militants have reached Malaysia’s shores.

“I guess this is something to do (with) the alcohol… you wanted a beer festival… this may be the case…” wrote Facebook user Mariah Mohd Shah on a link to the news article on the bomb blast.

Readers of The Malaysian Insider were also sceptical that gangsters were behind it, noting the weapon of choice used and the target of the grenade.

“Targeting club sounds more like extremists trying to ‘teach the non-Muslims a lesson’ than an underground tussle. And grenades? Can any civilian acquire hand grenades?” asked “ZakariahZ”.

Zahid: 34 M’sians with IS |

PUTRAJAYA: The government has identified 34 Malaysians who have joined IS and five have been reported dead while at war, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pix).

He added of the Malaysians who joined the militant group, four are women.

Ahmad Zahid told a press conference today after attending the ministry’s monthly assembly that the government would continue to monitor the route these militants use to transport the recruits.

He said the initial route has been changed and the police are monitoring a few possible routes that are being used to transport Malaysians to Syria and Iraq.

Ahmad Zahid also said police are monitoring any funds being transacted to meet the expenses of the militant group.

Cops detain a bride-to-be over IS involvement

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have detained a Malaysian bride-to-be for alleged involvement with the international terrorist group, the Islamic State (IS), at the KL International Airport (KLIA2), on Sunday.

The 25-year-old woman from Negri Sembilan, was detained under the Security Offences Act (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012.

She was supposed to marry a Malaysian in Syria, who is also an IS member.

According to a police source, who spoke to Bernama, the man had given the woman a cash of RM6,000 for travel expenses.

The police source said initially she had booked a ticket to Istanbul, Turkey, but changed her flight route to Brunei before heading to the Middle East to elude the authority’s detection.

It is understood that the Malaysian man had a brother, who was killed on Sept 30 in Syria in the ongoing conflict in that country.

Malaysia to join FBI in fight against IS

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will join the US-based Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the fight against Islamic State (IS) militants, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said both countries would focus on eradicating radical and extremist ideology among youths.

“The ministry and FBI will combat this menace together. This will be a continuous cooperation on both sides that has been forged since 1975,” he said in a telephone interview from Washington yesterday. He is on a nine-day working visit to the United States.

Dr Ahmad Zahid, who met FBI deputy director Mark Giuliano, said the US government still lacked the proper mechanism to rehabilitate extremist groups.

“We face a daunting task in combating extremism, especially when such ideas are spread widely through social media,” he said, adding that the IS threat in Iraq and Syria was also discussed.

Three suspected jihadists detained

KUALA LUMPUR: An architect, a technician and a shopkeeper became the latest Malaysians to be detained as suspected jihadists just as the country made its firmest stand against the Islamic State (IS), designating it a “terrorist organisation”.

The three were about to board a flight to Turkey from where they would have found their way into Syria to join the IS.

But they were detained at the KL International Airport by members of the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division at about 8.55am yesterday.

Police said the architect was from Pahang and the technician from Perlis, both aged 26. The 42-year-old sundry shop owner is from Kelantan and is believed to be married with six children.

“Initial investigations revealed that the suspects were planning to board a flight to Istanbul, which transited in Doha,” said Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ayob Khan, principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division, yesterday.

“From Turkey, these men were planning to book a passage into Syria where they would join the Islamic State terror group.”

He said that prior to the arrests, the police raided the homes of the suspects without their knowledge and discovered, among other evidence, an IS flag.

“We believe these men were recruited by Malaysian militants via social media sites, such as Facebook,” SAC Ayob said. “The suspects were also in contact with other Malaysians fighting in Syria.”

He said the police were closing in on the individual responsible for recruiting the men.

ISIS fighters from Malaysia, Indonesia form military unit

Group united by language could expand reach in S-E Asia: Analysts

MILITANTS from Indonesia and Malaysia fighting in Syria have formed a military unit for Malay- speaking ISIS fighters, and analysts fear this could expand their reach in South-east Asia.

The unit is called Katibah Nusantara Lid Daulah Islamiyyah, or Malay archipelago unit for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The Jakarta-based Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (Ipac) estimates in a report that the new unit has at least 22 members. They came together in the town of Al-Shadadi, in Syria’s Hasaka province, early last month.

Indonesian fighters Bahrum Syah – who appeared in a recent ISIS recruitment video – and Rosikien Nur posted a photo of one meeting on Facebook. The page has since been closed, Ipac said.

It is said that 40 Malaysians left for Syria to fight. Three are dead, 37 left.

More reports made over ‘slaughtering’ postings

More police reports have been lodged against Jemaah ISIS Malaysia for urging the slaughtering of the people of Sabah and Sarawak because they were ‘kapir’ (infidel), and insulting the ‘semi-naked’ Dayaks in Sarawak.

Yesterday, the youth wing of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) in Miri and youth wing of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) in Sibu, as well as four other Dayak non-governmental organisations (NGOs), lodged police reports against the purported seditious statements made by the group in its Facebook postings.

In Miri, SPDP Youth exco member Jaya Ramba, in his report, said that the postings if not controlled could put a wedge between the people of peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.

“The postings have insulted the people of the two states,” he said.

Jaya said: “We made a police report because we are worried that the then-prevailing unity will be destroyed in the blink of an eye, following the status update made by Jemaah ISIS Malaysia on a social webpage.

Report made over ‘behead Dayaks’ postings

The Dayak National Congress (DNC), a non-governmental organisation, this afternoon lodged a police report over two Facebook postings calling for the slaughter of Dayaks.

The postings on the page ‘JIM – Jemaah ISIS Malaysia’ said that this is as Dayaks are non-Muslims.

One of the postings dated last Thursday alleged that Sabah and Sarawak are “kafir” (non-believer) states where Muslims are “compelled” to “slaughter” non-Muslims.

“Sabah Serawak adalah Negri kapir maka wajib ke atas umat islam menyembelih rkyat mereka di sana.”

(Sabah and Sarawak are non-believer states so it is compulsory for Muslims to slaughter the people there)

In another posting today, the same user cited the Prophet Muhammad to say that the Dayaks – a loose term to refer to Sarawakian natives – are destined for hell and should be beheaded.

“Siapakah yang dimaksudkan oleh Rasulullah s.a.w. Tentang  golongan yg brpakaian tetapi bertelanjang dan mereka akan menghuni api neraka? …

“Yang dimaksudkan itu adalah Dayak. Mereka bercawat tapi masih nampak kemaluan. Barangsiapa bertemu dengan golongan ini. Penggal lah kepalanya.”

(Who did the Prophet Muhammad refer to when he spoke of those who are nude despite being clothed, who inhabit hell?…

(He means the Dayak. They wear loincloths but their private parts can still be seen. Whoever sees this group, behead them.)

Checks by Malaysiakini at 5.20pm found that the Facebook page has been closed.

Cops checking veracity of Malaysian ‘comfort women’ in Middle East report

PETALING JAYA: Police are checking the veracity of a report saying some Malaysian women had joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) forces to offer sexual comfort to militants.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police received the information from a report in an online portal.

“The information did not come from official channels. We are trying to verify the information as it involves the good name of our country,” he said in a press statement Wednesday.

The portal reported that Malaysian women were believed to have joined Isis forces to offer Jihad Al-Nikah or “sexual jihad” to militants.

Meanwhile, a source from the Bukit Aman counter-terrorism division said intelligence gathered indicated there were only two Malaysian women in Syria.

“They are not involved in sexual jihad, but are there to support their husbands who joined up with Isis.

“One of the women went to Syria in the middle of last year, while the other went in April this year,” he said.

The source added that there were women providing sexual comfort to militants, but intelligence showed they are not Malaysians.

Malaysian women join Middle East jihadists as ‘comfort women’, reveals intelligence report

Malaysian women are believed to have joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) forces to offer Jihad Al-Nikah or sexual jihad, senior intelligence officials told The Malaysian Insider.

Authorities confirmed that three Malaysian women have journeyed to the Middle East to join up with Isis forces.

Jihad Al-Nikah refers to a controversial concept where Sunni women allegedly offer themselves in sexual comfort roles to fighters for the establishment of Islamic rule.

The concept originated from a Wahhabi edict around 2013, that called for Sunni women supporters to come forward for sex jihad and boost the morale of fighters battling against Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.

“These women are believed to have offered themselves in sexual comfort roles to Isis fighters who are attempting to establish Islamic rule in the Middle East.

“This concept may seem controversial but it has arisen as certain Muslim women here are showing sympathy for the Isis struggle,” an intelligence official told The Malaysian Insider.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said one of the Malaysian women had travelled to the Middle East in December last year.

“The woman, in her 30s, went to Turkey before meeting up with middlemen who helped her to complete her journey to Syria via land routes.

“Another Malaysian woman in her 40s is believed to have linked up with Isis forces sometime in April this year,” the source said.

KUALA LUMPUR: THE Malaysian jihadist killed in Syria during a firefight between his group and government forces near Hama on Tuesday was believed to be a member of Kumpulan Militan Malaysia (KMM).

Intelligence sources said Zainan Harith, 52, also known as Abu Turob, was involved in the Southern Bank robbery in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, in May 2001.

“He had been arrested and charged under the Firearms Act 1960 after being caught making firearms for militant activities.”

Zainan was among three alleged KMM members sentenced to jail for the botched robbery. One of its member was killed in the incident.

Zainan, along with four Malaysians, known as Abu Aisyah, Abu Ain and Abu Tolha, as well as former Pas Dewan Ulama member Mohd Lotfi Ariffin, were reported to have been attacked by a tank during an ambush by the Syrian army at the village of Arza in Hama.

Lotfi confirmed the incident on his Facebook page.

“We received heavy fire from army artillery while guarding and defending our post near a small village here. After an hour of exchanging fire, a tank fired a shot, hitting him. Abu Turob collapsed near me.”

Zainan was hit in the head while Abu Aisyah, Abu Ain and Abu Tolha were seriously injured in the clash at 5.30pm local time (10.30pm Malaysia). Lotfi was unharmed.

In Shah Alam, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police had yet to receive any information on the death of any alleged Malaysian jihadist in Syria.

“We have not received any information on any of our citizens killed (in Syria) and no police reports have been made by anyone on family members or relatives who were killed in Syria.”

Cops: Militants bought explosives to hit Carlsberg

Suspected Malaysian militants loyal to the extremist Islamic State movement bought bomb-making material ahead of a proposed attack on a Carlsberg brewery near the capital Kuala Lumpur, a top anti-terrorism official said.

The plan, which the official said was at a “discussion” stage, would be the first time Southeast Asian militants inspired by Islamic State’s rise have sought to launch a major attack at home, adding to officials’ fears of a domestic “blowback” from Islamic State’s expansion in Syria and Iraq.

Ayob Khan Mydin, the police counter-terrorism division’s deputy chief, told Reuters that the group of 19 suspected militants had attained aluminium powder, which is often used as an ingredient in bombs.

“In terms of ideology and intention it was very clear,” Ayob Khan said in an interview. “It would have been carried out.”

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia said in a response to Reuters‘ questions that it had taken “necessary steps to ensure security at our premises, as employee safety is a priority”.

The group, seven of whom have been charged under anti-terrorism and weapons laws, had discussed bombing the Danish beer-maker’s factory in Petaling Jaya on the outskirts of the capital as well as other targets such as pubs, Ayob Khan said.

Ayob Khan said that 12 of the suspects had to be released due to lack of evidence tying them to specific plans for an attack or to join the banned Islamic State.

Despite the arrests, the group’s Malaysian supporters had continued to send followers to Syria, said Ayob Khan.

One of their main objectives was to target Putrajaya!

Putrajaya, brewery, discos, pubs… cops unveil militants’ hit list

Police today revealed that Malaysian militants arrested earlier this year were planning to attack several pubs, discos and even the Carlsberg brewery in Shah Alam.

Federal Special Branch principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Pitchay Mydin said the militants were supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).

“The suspects admitted that they wanted to overthrow what they perceived to be an un-Islamic government in Putrajaya,” Ayob told The Malaysian Insider today.

“Besides planning attacks on pubs and discotheques, the suspects were also targeting the Carlsberg brewery.

“One of their main objectives was to target Putrajaya,” Ayob said, referring to the 19 extremists whom police picked up between January and June.

“Based on our investigations, the suspects had raised tens of thousands of ringgit from their fundraising activities.”

Ayob also said that between 20 and 30 Malaysians have gone to Syria to fight with Isis, although figures could be higher.

“What we have detected so far is that figure but police believe the figure could be a lot higher than that.”

Police in June arrested three men in Sandakan, Sabah, who were allegedly militants.

One of the suspects had received training by the Abu Sayyaf Group in the southern Philippines, while another was a Royal Malaysian Navy personnel.

The three suspects had links with 11 people who had been arrested by police in April for involvement in militant activities.

Malaysia’s ISIS problem

August 16, 2014

The new ‘Islamic Caliphate’ taking hold of Syria and Iraq is already spreading its tentacles and threatening our way of life in Malaysia as well.

In Syria and Iraq, a war is being fought by the Islamic State, formerly known as Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), to establish a new caliphate in the Middle East and, by extension, over Muslims worldwide.

Led by the enigmatic Abu Bakr al-Baghadi, who claims to be a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, ISIS in its original form comprised several Sunni insurgent groups supported by Al-Qaeda.

In 2006, ISIS announced its rulership over the governorates of Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Nineveh and Babil in Iraq, before realising that an opportunity lay in the 2013 Syrian Civil War to expand its reach.

ISIS currently controls the following provinces in Syria: Al Barakah, Al Kheir, Ar-Raqqah, Al Badiya, Halab, Idlib, Hama, Damascus and the Coast, and boasts a fighting force of an estimated 4,000 jihadists.

But its ambitions extend much further than that, as it looks to dominate the Levant, which includes Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and parts of southern Turkey.

Even more chilling, perhaps, is ISIS’s trumpeting of its actions, recently seen in its Twitter boasts of executing as many as 1,700 prisoners, posting gruesome pictures as proof.

Homegrown jihadists

“That is scary,” you may say, “But what does all that have to do with Malaysia?”

A lot more than you may think. Just a few days ago, buried under news about the current Selangor political crisis, was an interview in the South China Morning Post with Ayub Khan, the senior counter-terrorism division official at Bukit Aman.

In that interview, Ayub revealed that some 19 Malaysian jihadists captured had confessed that there are plans to storm Putrajaya and replace the government with an Islamic Syariah government through armed warfare.

Along with that, they also planned to attack a disco, a Carlsberg factory and several pubs.

According to Ayub Khan, the number of actual militants currently looking to overturn our country’s government is probably much higher than the 19 already captured.

For a nation like Malaysia that touts itself as a successful moderate Muslim nation, this news is cause for panic.

The Islamist militant group allegedly planned to carry out an attack at one of the brewer’s locations in Malaysia

Danish brewer Carlsberg was on the target list of the Islamist militant group Isis, according to a report in the South China Morning Post.
The outlet reports that a Carlsberg facility in suburban Kuala Lumpur was among the attacks Isis planned to carry out in Malaysia.
The South China Morning Post reports that Isis, or the Islamic State (IS) as it is now known, has expanded into Malaysia and Indonesia, picking up local followers inspired by its declaration of an Islamic caliphate. At least 19 Malaysians suspected of being linked to the terror organization have been arrested this year.
“During questioning, they [the suspects] admitted one of their main objectives was to attack the government,” Ayub Khan, a senior official for Malaysia’s Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division, told the South China Morning Post. “They also discussed planning attacks against a disco, pubs in Kuala Lumpur and a Carlsberg factory in Petaling Jaya.”

Dangerous and on the loose

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Abd Hir is not dead. He is alive and remains one of the world’s most wanted and elusive terrorists.

The United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation has put a RM16mil price on his head and security agencies have stepped up their operations in the hunt for this dangerous fugitive, especially in view of events in Syria and Iraq.

Bukit Aman Special Branch’s Counter Terrorism Division principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ayob Khan confirmed that Zulkifli, also known as Marwan, was still alive – despite reports that he had been killed in an airstrike on Feb 2, 2012.

It is learnt that Muar-born Zulkifli had a wife in Malaysia but married three other Philippine nationals when he went into hiding.

The 48-year-old US trained engineer, who is a bomb making expert, has close links to the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group that is now active in the Philippines.

Intelligence sources said the Kumpulan Mujahiddin Malaysia (KMM) leader is regarded as a supplier of bombs for radical groups, and a trainer of their fighters.

“That is why his arrest is vital in our war against terror. He is part of the Jemaah Islamiyah group that was responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 200 people,” an analyst said.

QUESTION: Why is Universiti Malaya senior lecturer Dr Mahmud Ahmad the most wanted person in Malaysia today?

ANSWER: He has been identified as the person who recruited the first Malaysian suicide bomber Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki who blew up 25 elite Iraqi soldiers at the Iraqi SWAT headquarters in al-Anbar on May 26.

He is also planning a series of kidnappings of Malaysian students who left his militant cell. These students are now deemed as “hostile” and need to be “silenced” as they know all the workings of Mahmud and his militant cell.

Malaysian intelligence sources told The Malaysian Insider that Mahmud, 36, has been involved in militant activities since the 1990s when he was a student at the International Islamic University in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The other two senior members of his cell who are on the police’s wanted list are Mohd Najib Husen from Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, and Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee.

The two are members of Darul Islam Sabah and have joined the Abu Sayyaf.

Mahmud, Mohd Najib and Muhammad Joraimee were involved in recruiting and sending Malaysians to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (Isil) fighters in Syria.

Mohd Najib owned a photocopy and stationery shop in Universiti Malaya.

The other names released by police yesterday were Mohd Amin Baco, 31, and Jeknal Adil, 30. Both are from Tawau, Sabah.

Be brave like ISIL fighters, Najib tells Umno

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Umno must emulate the bravery of a Middle Eastern militant group that defeated an Iraqi force outnumbering it nearly 30 to one if the Malay nationalist party is to survive, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.

The Umno president and prime minister was listing virtues that were needed to allow the Malay nationalist party to continue in power, during a dinner to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its Cheras branch yesterday.

“For example, when someone dares to fight to their death, they can even defeat a much bigger team.

“As proof — whether we agree or not is another matter — the group ISIL with the strength of just 1,300 people, can defeat an Iraqi army of 30,000 soldiers, until four, five generals with three, four stars run for their lives, jump out the window at night. Why? Because they are afraid of those who are brave,” he told more than 1,000 Umno members in attendance.

He also stressed the importance of being loyal to god, the party, and friends.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has maintained his position against all forms of extremism and has never supported the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office, it said Najib had never voiced his support for ISIL at the Umno Cheras’ 20th anniversary dinner early this week.

“ISIL was mentioned briefly and in passing, but it is important to note that the Prime Minister is in no way indicated any support for ISIL. Any allegation to the contrary is completely false,” it said.

The comments in some websites had been taken out of all context, emphasising Putrajaya’s position against terrorist organisations, it added.

Malaysia considers ISIL as a terrorist organisation and suspected ISIL members in the country have been arrested, the statement said.

It also pointed out that the Prime Minister’s strong stance over many years against violence and extremismremains and is on record.

Video of possible Malaysian jihadists up on YouTube

PETALING JAYA: A video showing a group of people clad in military outfits with turbans, holding rifles and speaking in Malay has surfaced on Youtube.

The minute and half long video titled ‘Syria- Asian mercenaries fighting in the terrorist ranks’ (the original title in Spanish), showed the men preparing to leave for war.

“The tanks are leaving to its destination…towards the war zone,” a voice is heard speaking Malay with a Northern dialect.

About 10 men were seen holding their smartphones, smiling and cheering on their comrades, some of whom looked Middle-Eastern.

“These are the handsome mujahid (fighters). We are all going to be martyrs,” one of the men said.

Shouts of ‘hero-hero Malaya’ (Malayan heroes) could be heard in the background during the speech.

Najib’s call to Umno to emulate ISIL terrorists a COVERT call for BLOOD POLITICS – Bersih warns

Written by Bersih 2.0

BERSIH 2.0 condemns in the strongest language Prime Minister Najib Razak’s call upon UMNO members to emulate the ‘bravery’ of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS, also known as ISIL) terrorists and views this as a grave threat to parliamentary democracy.

ISIS has been committing gruesome crimes against humanity of beheading and indiscriminate killing of civilians and prisoners of war. The group is turning Iraq and Syria into another killing field of ethno-religious hatred after the former Yugoslavia and Burundi-Rwanda.

Najib’s praise for ISIS is an assault to humanity and civilisation. His call for its emulation is a covert call for the politics of blood.

It is an international embarrassment to Malaysia and the people of Malaysia that their Prime Minister has lauded a terrorist group for its criminal actions.

Glorifying the terrorism of ISIS signals a readiness of UMNO to replace electoral and parliamentary competition with military and violent domination. This statement is extremely alarming given the growing number and intensity of hate speech under Najib’s premiership since 2009.

Retract immediately

BERSIH 2.0 calls upon the prime minister to immediately retract and his terrorism-glorifying statement and apologise to all Malaysians as well as the people of Iraq and Syria.

Najib’s outrageous statement is both an insult to the thousands of victims in Iraq and Syria, making Malaysia a terrorism-friendly country, and a betrayal to Malaysia’s parliamentary democracy, which he has taken an oath to defend when he was sworn in as a parliamentarian.

BERSIH 2.0 urges all Malaysians including Najib’s colleagues in UMNO and Barisan Nasional to condemn Najib’s statement and demand his retraction and apologies–unless they agree with the call for UMNO to emulate ISIS.

This is a critical juncture that all Malaysians must stand together and put the interest of nation and humanity before that of parties and factions.

The Steering Committee of BERSIH 2.0, which comprises:

Maria Chin Abdullah (Chairperson), Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa (Deputy Chairperson), Masjaliza Hamzah (Treasurer), Farhana Abdul Halim, New Sin Yew, Jannie Lasimbang (Sabah Vice-chair), Ahmad b. Awang Ali (Sarawak Vice-chair), Abd Halim b. Wan Ismail (East Peninsula Vice-chair), Thomas Fann (South Peninsula Vice-chair), Simon Lee Ying Wai (Central Peninsula Vice-chair) and Dato’ Dr Toh Kin Woon (North Peninsula Vice-chair)

Cops nab weapons handler

Crack team: The counter-terrorist unit raiding the suspect’s house in Kampung Kelebor.

Crack team: The counter-terrorist unit raiding the suspect’s house in Kampung Kelebor.

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested the suspected weapons handler for a militant group that was planning to carry out suicide bombings and attacks in Syria and Iraq.

Bukit Aman’s Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division arrested the 25-year-old man in an operation at a house in Kampung Kelebor, Kuala Kangsar, at about 2pm yesterday.

The latest arrest brings the number of those arrested from the group to 16. They were linked to a rebel group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) in the Middle East and the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippines.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Zinin said police also seized a home-made rifle and 48 bullets.

“We believe the weapon was used by the militant group for training purposes.

Weapons man: Members of Bukit Aman Counter Terrorism Division detaining a man after raiding his home in Kampung Kelebor in Kuala Kangsar. The 25-year-old man is believed to be the weapons handler for a militant group linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (Isis) group waging wars in Syria and Iraq.

It is learnt that the grounds at Gunung Arang Para was used for two days last December by at least 10 militant members for weapons training.

“Other than Kuala Kangsar, the group also used a training site in Port Dickson. The militant group is all over the country … there could be more training sites,” the source said.

It is learnt that the militants also trained in southern Philippines and made their way to Sabah and later planned to fly to Syria and Iraq, where the ISIS was carrying out persistent attacks to topple the existing regimes.

The source said the militant group’s plan was to go to Syria and launch attacks before heading to Iraq for their “end game”.

ISIS and the first Malaysian suicide bomber

szs

Trained militant : Ahmad Tarmimi has the dubious honour of being Malaysia’s first suicide bomber linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham.

PETALING JAYA: Just a year ago, Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki was a quiet 26-year-old factory worker. Now, he has the dubious honour of being Malaysia’s first suicide bomber linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS).

He is credited with blowing up 25 elite Iraqi soldiers at Iraq’s SWAT headquarters in al-Anbar on May 26.

Reports state that Ahmad Tarmimi, who received militant training in Port Dickson at the end of last year, drove a military SUV filled with tonnes of explosives into the SWAT headquarters, blowing himself up in the process.

The bombing preceded an attack on the headquarters by ISIS commandos.

His exploits were published in the ISIS official website with the title, “Mujahidin Malaysia Syahid Dalam Operasi Martyrdom” with his photograph also featured.

The report also stated that the ISIS militants had seized a large weapon cache from the headquarters. It described Ahmad Tarmimi as the first Malaysian suicide bomber in Iraq.

Malaysian carries out suicide bombing in Iraq

Publication Date : 15-06-2014

A young factory worker from Pahang with links to the radical Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is believed to have become Malaysia’s first suicide bomber.

Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki, 26, drove a military SUV filled with explosives into Iraq’s Swat headquarters in al-Anbar on May 26, according to local media reports, blowing up and killing 25 soldiers and himself. He had reportedly been trained by militants in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, last year before travelling to Iraq.

The news comes after a recent crackdown on militant activities in Malaysia. Police said last Friday they had nabbed three men, including a senior leader trained by the extremist group Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines who had planned to go “somewhere else” to fight.

In April, police arrested 11 people who had planned to send fighters to Syria posing as humanitarian workers. Malaysia has also charged four of its citizens – three men and a housewife – with promoting terrorism in Syria.

And two Malaysians suspected of having ties to al-Qaeda have been charged in Lebanon with trying to enter Syria for suicide attacks.

Ahmad Tarmimi’s elder sister Halimah, 34, who lives in a Pahang village, told the Utusan Malaysia newspaper that the family only learnt of his activities after friends shared news of his death on Facebook after the bombing.

“He had been living and working in Selangor since 2012 and did not act in an unusual manner when he returned to the village, except that he liked to be alone, and was secretive,” she said.

The last time the family saw Ahmad Tarmimi in their village, in March, he told them he was going to West Asia to study religion.

Her husband Rozman, 38, said the family were worried for their own safety. He said he had raised Ahmad Tarmimi from the time he was nine, when his parents died.

The Utusan also reported that a former detainee, who did not want to be identified, confirmed that Ahmad Tarmimi had undergone militant training with him and nine others at Port Dickson.
