Police and military probe source of grenade booby trap

PETALING JAYA: Police and the armed forces are trying to get to the bottom of how an ex-serviceman got his hands on a hand grenade.

Sungai Buloh OCPD Supt Junaidi Bujang said it is believed that the suspect used one of four types of military-grade grenades that produced minor blasts.

“They were meant to maim a person rather than destroy. But given the incident that took place, such an explosion could have been fatal,” he said, adding that the type of explosive used in Saturday’s incident was still being investigated.

Supt Junaidi said investigators were now working with the army to ascertain if the suspect may have obtained the explosive from accomplices within the military or during his time as an officer in the late 1980s.

The man was arrested at his home in Cheras and is being remanded until Friday.

Grenade trap set by angry husband

PETALING JAYA: An angry husband is behind the hand grenade booby trap that went off outside a house in Kampung Baru Subang early Saturday.

The man had thought that the house belonged to his wife’s lover.

Sungai Buloh OCPD Supt Junaidi Bujang said the former military officer claimed that his wife had been cheating on him and he had tailed her and the lover to the house along Jalan 4D.

“The husband mistook the house to be that of his wife’s lover, but it actually belongs to the alleged lover’s cousin, whom he visits every now and then,” he said.

According to Supt Junaidi, the 50-year-old suspect had intended to kill both his wife and her lover with the grenade, which was made into a booby trap.

The booby trap was made by using a rock that kept the lever of the grenade down. When the lever is released or depressed, it would trigger an explosion.

The suspect was arrested by police at his house in Taman Tun Perak, Cheras, on the day of the incident, and he is now being remanded until Sept 19 to assist in investigations for attempted murder.

Supt Junaidi said the suspect had served as an officer at the Wardieburn Royal Malaysian Army camp in Setapak for six years in the late 1980s.

Cops: Love triangle suspected in hand grenade incident

KUALA LUMPUR: A love triangle is believed to be at the centre of the incident involving a booby trap utilising a hand grenade in Kampung Baru Subang, Sungai Buloh on Saturday.

Sungai Buloh police chief Supt Junaidi Bujang said they believed this was the case after questioning a former soldier, aged 50, following his arrest at the Pahlawan 2 Apartments in Taman Tun Perak here at 9pm Saturday.

He said the suspect was unhappy that his wife was seeing someone else – the cousin of the person whose car was damaged in the incident.

“The suspect accused the cousin of running away with his wife, and police believe it was him who was the target,” he said.

He added that police also seized two handphones and two cars, a Myvi and a Honda Civic, from the suspect to assist investigations.

SUNGAI BULOH: A restaurant manager had a lucky escape when a hand grenade blew up under her car as she was driving out of her house in Kampung Baru Subang Saturday morning.

The 40-year-old woman escaped without injuries but is traumatised, said Sungai Buloh OCPD Supt Junaidi Bujang.

He said the woman, driving a Toyota Vios, was exiting her house in Jalan 4D at about 6.45am, when the bottom of her car hit a rock that was in the middle of the dirt driveway outside her house.

“There was a hand grenade underneath the rock. We know it is a grenade because we found the pin near the scene.

“We believe someone placed the 12kg rock over the explosive to put pressure on it, so it will only explode when the rock is moved.

“When the car knocked the rock, the grenade exploded underneath the car. It caused the back bumper to collapse and ball bearings ripped holes all over the car,” Supt Junaidi told The Star at the scene.

NST

KUALA LUMPUR: Police discovered a hand grenade following a woman’s complaint that her car was damaged after a minor explosion at Kampung Baru Subang, Sungai Buloh, today.

In the 7.30am incident, the woman had stopped at a junction before entering a main road when she heard a loud explosion at the back of her white Toyota Vios.

The blast damaged the car’s rear bumper.

Sungai Buloh district police chief Supt Junaidi Bujang said preliminary investigation revealed that there was a hand grenade placed under a rock, positioned near the junction.

“Investigation showed that when the car passed by the rock, it activated the grenade, causing the explosion,” he said, adding that no casualties were recorded.
